Matt stretched out his muscles, grunting at the tightness in his side from the healed bullet wound. Shit it hurt still. Snorting through his nose, he stopped and cracked his knuckles. Popping up to his feet, he rolled his shoulders. Breathing out a heavy haze from his mouth from the puff he had been holding in.

Shuddering as it tingled his systems. That small rush then mellow, he breathed slowly.

Opening his eyes, he looked around the gym he was in. In the very back, in a privately rented room by him. He was free to do as he pleased, and right now, he was blowing off some well deserved steam.

The music started to play. Matt bounced from one foot to the other. On the other side was Kazzy, watching his trainer curiously, along with Dagger, who was also watching with much more interest.

What's Up Danger started to play. The intro going on. Matt grunted.

"What's up danger?"

He sprung forward, throwing several punches into a punching back. As the music went on, Matt sang with it. "If I sound lazy, ignore my tone, cause you always know i'm gonna answer when you call my phone like what's up danger"

Soon he brought his knee up into the bag, elbowing it as he started to snarl like a wild dog. His punching got more frantic, like it was perseon.

"Mama always askin' where did I go wrong?"

A kick.

"And I ain't really care if you ain't do ne wrong!"

A punch so hard the chains rattled to the ceiling.

"I like tall building so I can leap off of them!"

Two kicks

"I go hard with no matter how dark it is!"

Rapid punches. Sweat was pulling down Matt's arm and face. But he wasn't stopping.

"Like what's up danger."

"Can't stop me now!"

He kicked the bag so hard it came off the ceiling tile. Hitting the floor as he kicked it again and again.

"I got you now! Come on, what's up danger?!"

Panting, he leaned over the bag, sweat still pooled all around him. The back of his white shirt damp at the lower middle of his bag. The front was... tinted slight red. Shit, did Matt overdo it?

Lifters needed spotters Athletes needed coaches. Fighters needed sparring partners. And it seemed Matts needed someone to make sure they didn't drop dead in the middle of a set.[break][break]

Frankly, this wasn't Isaac's ideal choice of a stomping ground. Nowadays most of his own training was either on the sub or back at Slateport. "Mallville" was a place he'd rather spend as little time as possible. But, hey. He wasn't going to let personal distate make him stand up a friend.[break][break]

He held out a bottle of water for Matt, making sure not to step in the lagoon of sweat he was currently basting in. "C'mon, take five. You look like you just got done going ten rounds with a Machamp."

A loud exhale, hand reaching out to take the water. Tilting his head bag and chugging it, then pouring it over himself. "Have to make sure I'm ready." He pointed out, setting the water bottle down. Looking at the punching bag he broke from the ceiling, he looked it up and down. "Whoops." He muttered, stepping back.

"why don't you let off some steam? Feels good." He pointed out, going to sit down on a bench, rolling his shoulders some. "Gotta be ready to go see a space rock, after all." He pointed out. "Cause soooomeone wanted to stay on the ground and be boring." If there was one thing Matt always kept, it was that stupid sense of humor.

It was his equivalent of the Meteno; the big, inevitable disaster that would, if not kill him outright, forever alter the course of his existence.[break][break]

At the mention of the rock, Isaac simply snickered. "Oi, don't say it like I didn't want to be on the space team," he said. "But they figured I'd be more use on ground crew. Being able to switch gears between going quiet and going hard's made me a shoe-in for Pyre." It was better than Littleroot. Anything was better than turning his skills against Hoenn's most unsuspecting podunk town.[break][break]

Nevertheless, he took Matt up on his offer, giving a few probing jabs at a punching bag that hadn't been busted off of its restraints. His style was a lot more defensive and reactive, with it rarely being more than three punches thrown before a feint, stance change, or bit of flourishing footwork.[break][break]

"Almost surprised to see you diving right into things like this. I mean. Maybe not. You're Matt, after all. But, shit, going right from Ranger to Rocket in a rocket, huh?"

Matt watched his style, quite the opposite to his. Honestly, he wondered how he and Isaac would fair in a battle together. That wasn't them fighting two pokemon.

"You better be safe out there. I don't want to have to jump off the meteor to get to Pyre to come save your ass." He teased, trying to make some light hearted fun. Getting a towel to start wiping off the sweat from his face.

"Gotta... do something, seemed the best route to go. Plus it's where Nico is going, and not letting him go by himself." Matt would die on that mission to protect him if he had too.

From there, he grabbed the bag's "arm", executing what would have been a flawless hip toss if the bag wasn't tethered to the ceiling. "You know safety and I don't get along," he admitted. "But I'm gonna be trying my best out there, okay?"[break][break]

Just admitting it felt like letting the bad luck in. But it was true, wasn't it? As good as Isaac was at bullshitting his way out of trouble, he was even better at bullshitting his way into it. And it was hard not to ask for trouble when Team Rocket was interrupting a plan to avert the apocalypse. Their mere presence here was trouble, and all in the name of a few resources.[break][break]

"I've got a bad feeling about this one," he admitted. "Whole thing feels like it's gonna blow up in our faces. Either that, or it's gonna go horribly right. Sometimes, it's hard to tell which possibility's scarier." He hit the bag with another quick punch, taking advantage of his forward momentum to slip behind the punching bag and pull it into a chokehold. "But, just like you, I gotta pitch in how I can, right?"[break][break]

He turned to Matt, shooting him a weary smile. "You stay safe up there too, okay? You've got a future, and people counting on you." At this point, all of those were either dead to Isaac or already wrapped up in this whole Rocket business. Matt having degrees of separation from this whole mess was equal parts a blessing and a curse.[break][break]

"And take good care of Nico, too. Not that he needs protection, especially if he's bringing those lightning fists with him. Shit, he might even bail you out of a few jams along the way!"

"Yeah, knowing him... he'll be saving me." He laughed, sighing as he shook his head. "Once it's over, we're going drinking. Got it?" He wasn't going to let Isaac forget it. They were going to be need the strongest vodka and a lot of therapy. So much therapy was going to be needed.

A more somber face came, looking at him. "If for some reason I don't make it back... tell my fam and watch over Nico, will ya?" Probably the only person besides Josh he'd trust to look out for his boyfriend.

"And if you don't come back, I'm finding Arceus himself and kicking his ass till he brings you back."

God knows Isaac needed to get that through his own thick skull (which was currently being driven into the punching bag's guts as a cheap shot). "That's what love is, right? Protecting each other through thick and thin, no matter what? Even if stubborn fucks like us are gonna bitch and moan about it, we're lucky to have people looking out for us."[break][break]

And that didn't even have to mean SOs, did it? Sure, Isaac had ana fell looking out for him, even if she couldn't be there. But there was also the love of his brother in arms, Ashley Shepard. There was even the trust of Cillian Quinn, a man who was rapidly becoming his Rocket inspiration.[break][break]

Those from the outside lent their support, too. That clearly included Matt, who was ready to fight with Arceus itself to bring Isaac back from the brink. "Right back at ya, buddy," he said, flashing a grateful grin Matt's way. He made sure to drop an elbow into the solar plexus of the bag as he did so, because you don't take your eye off of a battle without accounting for the enemy![break][break]

"And if Arceus doesn't cough you back up . . . yeah. I'll make sure they're all okay. I promise."[break][break]

If they were lucky, they'd be drinking to celebrate by the time this was over. If they weren't, they'd be drinking to forget. Isaac hoped against hope that it'd be the former. "Every damn bar in the city's gonna know our names by the time we're through," he said, snickering a little. "It's gonna be great."[break][break]

Matt let out a big laugh, slapping his thigh. "Our names, age, birth signs, everything!" It felt good to cut up with Isaac like this. Just two friends chilling in a gym. No homo there. Matt was only homo for nicodemus unken.

"Better hope the flying types can get our drunk asses home. Or someone with us isn't drinking." A shrug. "For future us to figure out."

Future him hated this already. A lot.
