Another meteorite cut a swathe through the night sky above the apex of the mountain-- a beautiful, harrowing sight. Thomas could certainly see why folk of old thought these to be extraplanar beings, harbingers of doom or good fortune in equal turn.

He was as much a fan of the stars as anyone should be, given they were an amazing feat of chance; the odds of everything lining up so perfectly for their world to be the only one capable of life were one in a million. He’d argued many sides of the philosophy of existence for some time now and it never ceased to amaze him.

Molly was less amazed, judging by how she frowned when his foot slipped on a loose stone and he almost pitched over, righting himself by sheer, dumb luck. The Gardevoir tossed her head and rolled her eyes, beleagueredly carrying on after her foolish trainer.

no. fuck that, actually. if he was going to make a list of that, climbing a mountain in the middle of the night was the last thing going on it. was it a stupid decision? yeah, probably, but as far as stupid decisions went it wasn’t the worst one he had made.

which sounds like some self-pitying bullshit, now that he thinks about it, with a healthy helping of extra bullshit that it was inspired by going on a walk.

something in front of him shuffles, and in the dark, hellebore can’t see the cause of it, but he can hear it, and that’s all it takes for something hardwired in his brain, something focused on his survival, to switch to kill attack maim mode. his hand hovers on the pokeball holding his sylveon and ninetales, waiting for something, before all falls silent again.

it isn’t enough to stop hellebore from wishing he had a gun or something, but it is enough to encourage him to push onwards, blissfully unaware of the meteorite that had caused the slip-up.

Molly notes the newcomer before Thomas does, tracing them out of her peripherals while not taking her eyes off her trainer, lest he fall and die and thus ruin all her hard work. Thomas’ instincts kick in shortly after and he turns, noting the faint glow of lavender hair in the light from a close-passing meteorite.

“Out for an evening stroll?” his voice is a low, gentle timbre in the night.

Something rumbles close by and sends rocky debris scattering down the mountainside. Thomas digs his cane into the grit and braces himself, but Molly is faster, sending the Coalossal down with a blast of hypnosis. The beast groans as it topples, and Thomas zaps it with a Pokeball before it can completely fall.

the sight of someone moving, much too close to where hellebore is for comfort, has him biting down a curse. it's just a man and his pokemon- and, despite the way his question sends those alarms ringing in hellebore's mind, the librarian takes a second to judge the distance between them, and whether or not the man seems like the needlessly aggressive type.

he doesn't, and it's only then that hellebore relaxes- not completely, because he thinks he's past the point of anything like that now, but enough. "something like that." as soon as he says it, hellebore freezes in a moment of shit fuck that sounds like i'm doing something illegal and hurries to try to clarify, reasoning a half-panicked rush of words. "i mean- i'm just about to head back-"

and then something rumbles as it stirs, sending a few rocks scattering down. it's enough for hellebore's panic of seeming like he's doing something wrong to turn into a what the hell is that based fear. but the pokemon- and it is a pokemon- starts to fall (drop dead?) as soon as it had stirred, and the man zaps it with a pokeball before it can, leaving a geodude in its wake, rushing to escape what it must have thought was its own death.

he can't blame it, actually- the longer he stands there, the more tempting it is to just turn around and go home. he's not trying to get crushed by giant mountain monsters, after all.
