Fortree was sometimes, too… too rustic in the forest to host a proper carnival. Kind of like the big ones back in Nimbasa.

Lilycove, however…

Well, that was as big as you can get!

He’d made sure to book the entire day today as an off day—no challengers, no nada, no nothing—and just… go have a merry ol’ good time with the lil’ ol’ froggie!

“Come on, come on, come on! We don’t have the whole day!” he begged, turning around—and yes, the white bear ears were perched in his hair, again.

For good measure.

“Did you—you’ve gone to big-ass carnivals like this before? Right?”

[attr="class","samjermain"]Vacation time was a bittersweet concept for Memo. he loved being able to spend the whole day with Alex, but that meant there was so much work piling up for him back in Fortree. He tried to shut his anxiety brain off and enjoy the free time.

“Technically we do have all day,” he countered good-naturedly as he let himself be dragged along the cobbled Lilycove streets. Winter was beginning to release its hold on the world and Hoenn’s normal climate struggled to re-orient itself as the dominant facet of the environment.

“Yeah, I’ve gone before. Is this the kind that comes with sketchy carnival rides?”

“Hey, they’re not sketchy!” he countered, because he was pretty sure that the carnival that his partner was thinking about was vastly different from the one he knew—the big, flashy, gaudy ones back in Nimbasa.

“The rides are perfectly safe, what on earth are you talking about?” he went on, as the carnival came within sight.

“They’ve got roller coasters, merry go rounds, those spinny wheels, water rides—everything! The ones back in Nimbasa had one of everything!”

He wanted to take the Frog out on a ride—he wondered how the other did with inverting roller coasters…

Then again, the one in Nimbasa was a permanent fixture of the city, so… he didn’t have a counter-argument for that.

“Not even the silly love tunnel?” he wheedled, a teeny bit of begging in his voice. Maybe? Slightly. Hopefully.

Anyway!

“Those games? You know most of, if not all them are rigged, right?”

Look, Memo, your boyfriend’s luck and skill with carnival games was pretty much… zero. Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Wasn’t that sad?

He scanned the prize offerings above a game booth. “Mmm, not if you know the tricks. Like… ahh, here.” He pointed to a milk jug toss booth that had a giant Salamence plushie as one of the prizes. “I’ll win you that. We just have to find something first… oh!”

He gestured across the way at a caramel appel booth. “Okay, I’ve got a plan. Follow me.” And he led them up to the queue and then to the cashier.

“Two caramel apples, please.”

“You… you better get that Salamence for me,” he continued in that same quiet, but doubtful tone. Those carnival booths were fucking rigged, and he knew it!

(See: the countless times he’d tried to win one for himself whenever there was a ye olde ‘faire’ around these parts.)

Once he mentioned caramel apples—if he had Growlithe ears they would’ve perked.

“Extra caramel for me, please,” he added once they were close enough.

[attr="class","samjermain"]“Extra caramel for him, please,” Memo requested with a laugh as Alex perched over his shoulder, eyes wide and childlike at the prospect of delicious, sweet-and-sour sugar covered fruit on a stick. Memo paid the man and handed the extra goopy caramel apple to Alex.

“You can have this one, too,” he said, handing off his own after he’d done little more than touched his fingertips to it, getting the tacky, sticky substance on the pads of his fingers as he stepped up to the ball toss booth.

After a transfer of tickets with his non-sticky hand, he tossed the little softball with the caramel-touched one; like magic, the sticky sphere lodged in the jug, and stuck, before slowly, slowly, dropping down with a hollow thunk.

He waggled his eyebrows at Alex to say see what I mean? before tossing another ball and sinking that one, too.

“Wha—you don’ wan’ your appl’?” he mumbled around the mouthful he was currently enjoying, following his ~~boyfriend~~ partner as they were off to the booths.

Oh, hell no. Not these rigged entertainment hotspots again!

Left speechless by what he’d just witnessed, Memo was lucky that he had a mouthful of goopy caramel apple to keep him from talking as he saw what had gone down.
