She tried not to laugh as Lars proposed the idea. Yet her smile just kept widening as he proposed the impossible. Not even a christmas miracle would be enough to make his plan work.

“I like your plan, Lars, I really do…” Elinor began. Knowing full well that the but following would take away all credibility of her prior words. “But I don’t think your plan is feasible. To begin with, we have no way to assure that nobody is keeping secrets.” Elinor stated.

“And that’s not even scratching at the problem of backstabbing.”

She took a moment to pause, to think, to consider their options IF they were to try. “I suppose, if Jirachi ever regains its full power, we could use it’s wish granting powers to make secrets within the League an impossibility.”

Then another thought occurred.

“But then what would we do against Team Rockets that infiltrate the organization?”

Again she returned to thoughtfulness.

He knew she was going to tease him to hell and back for his suggestion but he said what he said.

“What can I say, I’ve still got some shreds of optimism remaining. Kind of sad, though, considering how fucked up the rest of most of the League is at this point.”

While he could turn a blind eye to all the ex-Rockets joining the Rangers, fact of the matter was that background checking wasn’t stringent enough to prevent such a thing.

“That’s a testament to how sad our background checking is. Most anyone can get a job with the League, but then suddenly lo and behold they’re actually a rat?”

He released a grumbled sigh before rolling his eyes.

“Ugh. What do you suggest? I’m at the end of my rope.”

“Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate the optimism. We certainly could use more of it.” Elinor acknowledged.

A comment on background checks led into the one question Elinor knew was coming. What suggestions did she have to fix these problems?

“Yeah, we definitely need to do better there.” She paused.

“It is a place to start.” Elinor stated. “But honestly even if I did have ideas. Any ideas we tried to implement would require those at the top WANTING to change the status quo. And sometimes I have my doubts that they do.” She thought of FERNANDO SILPH, PENELOPE LIVY, and even dahlia goode. As long as there were problems in Hoenn, whether it be from Team Rocket or further down the League Ladder, there was work to do for them.

A sigh escaped her.

Lars was right. Too bloody right. The status quo needed to be scrambled for anything to happen. But she knew it wouldn’t be so easy.

Stronger foes had tried to deal with Hoenn, and failed. Just look at the DRK TRIAD and their use of the deities Dialga, Palkia. The Meteor as well. No matter how world-ending a situation seemed, Hoenn continued on.

Before Elinor could drag herself down that rabbit-hole Lars asked a simpler question. Did she want another cup of coffee? A simple question with a simple answer.

“Sure.”
