It gave him the break he needed to plant his knee in her stomach and push her away-- the air ran out of her in a wheeze as she curled up, fingers digging through clods of dirt as she fought not to heave.

“Fuck you--,” Cyg coughed, a thin trickle of blood streaming down from her hairline where the skin was split. She took a big step forward to catch up to Lars, bringing her heel up to kick down into the back of his knee as hard as she could.

Once more the Lucario countered Feldspar’s attack, this time in an artful hand-to-hand combat move that struck the Rillaboom in the right clavicle, sending him spinning up and back. He would have just hit the ground and gotten back up if a-- a wall of ice hadn’t sprouted up in the way for him to crash through mid spin. Streaks of fresh, bright red blood splattered the ground as the icicles caught and shredded Feldspar’s arm, the ape shrieking in pain.

Luckily the first ice wall had lowered his impetus enough for him to rock gently back against the ten-foot-tall razor sharp icicle that sprouted out of the ground. Feldspar picked himself to his feet, breathing heavily, mouth flecked with spit, rivulets of blood rolling down his left arm.

“What the shit?!” Cyg snarled, clasping her fists together and swinging them hard at the side of Lars’ head. "Try and kill me, not him!"

The Rillaboom screeched in rage and fired off an energy ball at the Lucario.

[attr="class","samknoxw"]The back of Cyg’s fist crashes against the ice-armor and she screams, a punched-out sound as her right metacarpals fracture, last knuckle on her left hand splitting open from where they’re interconnected. The pain shoots up her arm and has her staggering for a second-- a second too long as now Lars is trying to fucking stab her.

She grunts and drops her elbow, stumbling backwards. The knife cuts a clean line along the outside of her right radial, stinging with harsh cold. “F-fuck you,” she grunts, knee coming up to shoot her boot out in a fierce kick to keep him at bay.

Feldspar was crushed by the Lucario’s extreme speed, paw wrapped around his throat and forced back against the wall of ice as it continued to build up around him. He began to scream, high-pitched ape howling, as he thrashed with high horsepower to shatter the ice around him and fling himself free of the cage, aiming to crush the Lucario beneath him.

[attr="class","samknoxw"]The splinters of ice fired through the air, piercing her in a storm of little nics; literally a death by a thousand cuts. She swore and closed her eyes, cringing down to cover her face as the ice opened little stinging red lines over her forearms, shoulders, neck, and chest. Some stabbed into the tops of her thighs, melting quickly against her body heat as thin lines of blood began to trail down her legs.

The same happened to Feldspar, though he handled it with more grace. It wasn't much but a papercut in his enraged state as he flung himself forward, swinging his drum around in another brutal swing.

TW MILD VIOLENCE & GORE

“Hah! Fuck you!”

It was a victory she hadn’t expected to have. She wasn’t malicious, overly, and didn’t usually cheer for the pain caused to another Pokémon— but she’d flown into this half-cocked and this was, honestly, the best she could expect.

Her joy didn’t last very long. Huge stalactites were plummeting from the sky, and as Feldspar threw his head back and pounded his chest in elation at his victory, one struck him dead in the face, needle-sharp point punching straight through his nasal bone and exploding out the back of his head in a spray of blood as the mass of the back end of the stalactite drove it downward.

It went until it hit the ground and Feldspar fell back, shivering once, twice as his brain stem began to fizzle and burst, and then he was still.

Cyg’s motion- a half-curled launch into a victorious fist pump— carried her forward as her jaw dropped open. Her knees hit the dirt. The sound that came from her was something inhuman, a banshee wail of rage and sadness and a throat-rending scream of shock. Lars’ ice knuckles went flying through the air in the space where her head had been moments before, the man himself forgotten as she picked herself up off the ground and half stumbled, half scrabbled towards the remains of her first Pokémon partner, tiny gasping noises escaping her as tears streamed unnoticed down her bleeding face.

[attr="class","samknoxw"] She was still making that horrible screaming noise-- at least, she thought that was her, she couldn’t make herself stop, her brain was just a wash of static and-- and volume as she reached for Feldspar’s body. She touched the dark fur at his shoulder, fingers creeping up to his trauma-blown cheek, the frost spreading from him chilling her fingertips immediately. They fused to his fur and she had to wrench them free, the skin pulling off her fingers, but she kept going back to touch him because she could not believe what was happening.

“F-f-feldspar?” she finally said, and her voice was hoarse and quiet. “B-baby?”

Her hands burned with the cold. The stalactite in his face was melting now, spilling down over his face and chest, running the ground below red with muck and viscera, tiny fractured fragments of bones bumping against her knees.

[attr="class","samknoxw"]Cyg isn’t paying attention at all to what Lars is doing or saying. As far as she’s concerned the world has narrowed down, small enough to fit on the head of a pin. It’s just her and this lifeless corpse of her best friend, now.

The cold starts to fade, sloughing away in crackling, then melting, layers. Her fingers are burned raw and red from where she pressed them to Feldspar’s body in a deranged attempt to push some life back into him.

But there’s nothing there anymore.

Eventually, her Lucario appears from his containment sphere and puts his paws on her shoulders, giving her a gentle shake, as though to wake her from a dream. Her head rocks back and forth on her shoulders, but she can’t stop staring at Feldspar’s corpse.

Twilight gives Lars a withering look as he-- paces off to talk to no one, or whatever the fuck he’s doing. With a heavy sigh, he wraps his arms under Cyg’s and heaves her up, throwing her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and stalking off in the opposite direction as she dangles, silent and in shock.
