This was beyond embarrassing. It wasn't like most cases where he did something stupid and had to go groveling to dad to clean it up. Even those situations could be handled with a degree of shame still intact.

This, this was the lowest point. It had to be. Already, he could see the look on her face. Or at least, the look following the surprise of him finding her there. She wasn't difficult to find, which wasn't exactly surprising. Most people that were habitually online were easy to find. She didn't have a breadcrumb trail, she had a neon sign above her house and she likely didn't even realize it.

Sen was used to weaseling things out of people, usually with permission and sometimes without. He didn't actively steal from family, but he would steal from babies and elderly. Rules were meant to be broken, which was why he had so few of his own. One could not feel guilty for their actions if there was never a precedent to begin with. There was no high horse for him, but there was for Yumi. This was going to suck majorly.

This would not have been so bad if he hadn't snubbed her, in the end. It was expected, of course, the whole family had. He could have been better, but he wasn't. Of course he wasn't. People took things entirely too personally. It wasn't that he'd disowned her too, he was just looking out for number one. Now... number one needed her not to punch him in the throat and tell him it was nothing personal.

Yumi was not expecting visitors that day. The knock on the door startled her from her current task of sorting through her jewelry. Her Delcatty raised his head from the fluffy Pokémon bed on which he lay and uttered a soft meow.[break][break]

"I don't know, Kumo," she replied, getting up from the table. Crossing the apartment, she tapped the security panel to activate the camera outside the door.[break][break]

The face that popped up on the screen was the last one Yumi ever expected to see in Hoenn. She paused, her eyes wide, her eyebrows risen into her forehead. What was he doing there?[break][break]

Her expression falling into a frosty skepticism, she opened the front door. "Sen," she said in greeting, her tone clipped, her brow furrowed and mouth turned down in a frown. "What are you doing here?"

He could sense her energy through the vacant screen of the camera, bleeping to life. Or maybe it was his imagination. It didn't take a lot of empathetic foresight to know he probably wasn't going to be welcome. Typically, this could be handled easily. Most people could be manipulated with a little bit of charm and a pretty smile. Yumi was family, which meant she was a Hasegawa, which meant she knew all of the games.

They were raised playing these games, serpentine smiles and lying through their teeth. It was practically in their blood, a requirement of the lineage. If one couldn't keep up, they were better off ejecting themselves straight to hell.

His smile was still as authentic as he could possibly manage. The door opened, which was a step farther than he was expecting to get. "Is that really any way to greet your favorite cousin?" He already knew that was debatable. He was like an aggressive tick, extra hard to pluck. "Come on, Yumi, I came all this way just to see you." Not exactly true, not authentically. He had an ulterior motive, but who didn't?

Perhaps any other person would have been suckered in by Sen's sweet smile, but Yumi knew better. She scoffed and tossed her hair over her shoulder with a dismissive hand.[break][break]

"Sure you did," she replied, eyes narrowing. "Came all the way to see me when the last thing you said was how you're the favorite grandchild now, and Grandfather will forgive all your past mistakes."[break][break]

Which had been a load of horseshit, as far as Yumi had been concerned. Unlike her, Sen had never given a thought to running the family's businesses one day. Had he even gone to university or graduated high school?[break][break]

It only took a glance to know he wasn't fooling her. As if there had been the slightest possibility of her regarding him with anything but frigidity. Yumi was the embodiment of a cold shoulder, so really, why had he expecting anything else? Still, he managed a wry "pity me" sort of smile, hoping she didn't verbally destroy him before he could beg for mercy.

Yumi rolled her eyes at Sen's dramatics, but ultimately stepped aside and opened the door wider. "Get inside before you attract the neighbors' attention."[break][break]

The apartment was not grand — certainly not compared to the Hasegawa manor back in Goldenrod City — but it was roomy, with large windows, and decorated nicely. Yumi closed the door behind Sen once he entered, then made her way to the sitting area where a comfortable couch and armchair were arranged around a coffee table.[break][break]

She sat in the armchair, her Delcatty curling at her feet. Though her parents had taught her to provide hospitality to guests, they also taught her when to withhold it.[break][break]

Yumi gestured to the couch. "Sit. Tell me what's going on."

As to be expected ~~aka hoped and prayed~~, Yumi relented and mercifully stepped aside. Truly, he shouldn't even be there. This was hardly an achievement. Yumi could throw him out, she had enough security to cook him alive obviously. This wasn't an achievement because it got him nowhere. His hopes and prayers had afforded him a couch to lay his broke ass on for the next five minutes.

Still, he smiled like it was his job to do so.

"Oh you know, the usual stuff. I do something wrong..." Disruptive hacking was pushing the boundaries of "wrong", especially when traced back to the family. He did a shoddy job, got comfortable and sloppy and his dad had a point. He didn't add these details. "My dad decided to cut me off after some statements were made."

"Okay, I'm gonna be real because I can't do this anymore. I fucked around and found out. These are the consequences of my immensely dumb actions, I know that, but I also am suffering and in desperate need of money. "Blood would have been a great reason if our blood hadn't turned on me," Yumi shot back with great acidity. "Blood has shown me exactly how much I should value it."[break][break]

On the other hand, none of the people who'd helped her since her exile were blood relatives: Hitoshi Inoue, Mei Liu, vincenzo de luca, even Cillian Quinn and BARNABY FINCH. From them, she'd learned that loyalty was earned, not promised.[break][break]

But Sen's suggestion was not one she could dismiss in its entirety. He was right. While she didn't wish to hand him the reins of her personal social media presence, there was another way he could help her.[break][break]

"There is something, actually," Yumi said, taking out her phone and opening the mobile browser. "I've taken over ownership of a casino in Sootopolis, Casino Starlight. And I need someone to maintain its website and handle any IT issues."[break][break]

"Yes, so very sad." He said it in a way that was both disinterested and mocking, yet dry enough to be considered condolences among their kind. As far as he could tell, she seemed to be doing just fine so he didn't get the point in fussing over it. Though it wasn't worth it to recover the violin necessary to play her a sad song of contrition. He wasn't there for that and for all his grievances of blood and loyalty, he was a shark.

Sen tilted his head, looking at the mobile spun around to him. An eyebrow lifted, not immediately impressed. "Sounds dreadfully boring." He sighed, not immediately realizing she was handing him a golden-fucking-ticket. Likely not for the reason she perceived. Techy to her meant he played video games and could doll up her website. Casinos had a lot of personal information and, better yet, money.

Was he going to burn that bridge and throw his dear sweet cousin in the fire? Mmmm no, probably not. Yet there were ways to be discreet about these things. "Yes, dear cousin, I know how jobs work." He snorted, "Alright fine, I suppose that'll work."

There should have been something thrilling about the idea of a job. That was his problem, wasn't it? A lack of purpose. He sought to make himself useful and they ridiculed him to the point that none of it mattered. Already, he was looking for ways to self-destruct, it was fucking typical. Though, it wasn't like he was gonna get on his knees and praise her for it. "Thanks." Still, he didn't say it all that derisively. It might have even been genuine, even if he was already scheming another get-rich-quick scheme.

Even though Sen probably deserved whatever filthy, cockroach-infested apartment he'd managed to acquire, Yumi detested the idea of anyone in her family living anywhere less than luxurious.[break][break]

"You'll not sully the Hasegawa name by living in a shithole," she decided. "Your salary should allow you to move out and find somewhere nicer, even if it has to be in the Lower District. Let me know when you're ready to move out and I'll help."[break][break]

More like her Pokémon would help with the moving while she oversaw the whole process.[break][break]

Sen was unable to give compliments without putting down the other person (and himself) in the same breath. Yumi was used it. What she hadn't expected, however, was her immediate reaction to his words, "So what did it matter?"[break][break]

Yes, she tended to land on her feet and keep running. She could figure out how to make a name for herself without their family's support. But that didn't mean being kicked out of her own home hadn't hurt. That didn't mean she hadn't cried herself to sleep for several nights in a row at first, half-furious, half-depressed.[break][break]

And not even her cousin, who regular knew the disappoint of their elders, had shown her empathy.[break][break]

"You should leave now, Sen," Yumi said abruptly, no longer willing to entertain his presence in her new home. In her voice simmered fury. "I'll see you tomorrow."
