Long before shit went down, and Doug had a terrible, no good, very bad day dealing with murderous rockets, kinda cool modern ladies, flame-spamming psychos and other such fun encounters, Doug had simply stood guard in front of one of many league appropriated portals and waited, ocassionally exchanging reports or self-amusing banter with other assigned guards.

Not a terribly exciting job while in the middle of what quite closely resembled open war, but it certainly was a job that needed doing.

Unfortunately, they had chosen one of the few loyal League members with easily abused weaknesses.

The young soldier yawned defenselessly, holding a hand in front of his mouth as he smacked his lips.

"Someone could just murder me in this little corner and no one would even notice." He observed ominously.

The urge to sigh is suppressed, her fingers tapping quick at her screen as she types out a message - A warning to any Rockets nearby that they'd find nothing but enemies here. But as she continues to sneak peeks around the corner, she's counting the number of people present, trying her best to see if there's anyone that they should watch out for...[break][break]

She pulls back sharply, dread building in her chest as she grips at the shortswords on her belt.[break][break]

Utterly oblivious to the little spy around the corner, Doug did very undignified guard things, like openly yawning without covering his mouth, and checking his phone while on the job, clearly playing some otome nonsense going by how slow and thoughtful his taps were. Either way, he was looking worryingly unconcerned about possibly getting ambushed.

"... I want ice cream." He said to no one in particular after a moment, his hand dropping down to his side as he craned back his head and groaned. "Rockets just had to fuck around during mah paid leave."

First things first, she should probably try and catch his attention... And she does just that by popping her head around the corner, offering him the smallest of smiles and a shy wave to match. She isn't even phased by the way he's acting. If he's that relaxed, it would be best if she mirrored that attitude, right?

Eventually, he finally perceived the little gremlin around the corner, briefly squinting in the dark to make sure he wasn't just imagining things before gasping, his new phone slipping off his grasp and falling to the rocky floor.

Screen first.

Crack.

"Eris?" He asked, squinting again before his eyes flew wide open. "Eris!"

Large steps brought the youth over to the corner, before he dropped onto one knee in front of the little girl and spread his arms wide open, smiling brightly.

He offers open arms and waits for her to do so, most possibly sparing him any instinctive kick to the knee.[break][break]

She's careful as she manoeuvres her way into the hug, making sure he avoids pressing anywhere near her newest wound. As long as he doesn't find out, he'll probably be a lot happier.[break][break]

The youth can't help but grin as Eris maneuvers herself into the hug. She's come such a long way! He hugs her warmly, humming at her question.

"Nah, there's ways to just close rifts if that's what'cha need." Doug said. "Just been told to keep the crazies out, really."

Doug gently untangled himself from Eris in order to look her in the face, squinting for a moment.

"Nevermind all that; work's boring. How's your eye, sport?" He asked softly.

"Yup yup. Don't really understand it myself, but it's got to do with the meteor that almost killed us." Doug said as he closed one eye and squinted at Eris' own, pursing his lips at the color.

Nope, nope, nope. He hadn't gotten cursed getting these stupid healing powers just to let his little sister go half blind.

"That right? Well, no need to worry 'bout it." Doug said, pursing his lips as he focused, breathing in deeply and closing his eyes as he gathered his scales at one point. "I'll take care of ya."

With a slow exhale, the youth let the healing scales flow freely into Eris' eye, and then, for good measure, the rest of her, hoping it would do some good. She seemed to always be hurt whenever they met. He wished he be a better friend and take care of her better.

"Did... that help any?"

There are still things she's yet to understand but that won't stop her from putting them aside in favour of observing Doug's reaction.[break][break]

He seems a little bothered. Perhaps, very bothered by the state of her eye. And when he starts gathering scales, she finds herself daunted by the unknown, her eyes shut tight as she waits for something to happen. But a minute passes, then another, and all she feels is just how much lighter her body feels. That low ache in her back has somewhat subsided and as she opens her eyes...[break][break]

She doesn't quite notice anything different. The faded pink of her iris remains there like a stubborn piece of graffiti, the scar still evident as ever. If Doug tries to wave a hand on her left, she still needs to tilt her head a little, just enough for her to get it into view of her right eye.[break][break]

"I feel a lot better!" Still, there's no point lingering on what might or might not have happened. She smiles as she confidently speaks a half-truth. "Doesn't hurt as bad as it used to?"

Eris said she felt better, which made him feel a bit better about the fact that her eye hadn't seemed to change much, much to his chagrin.

What was he missing? First FERNANDO SILPH, now Eris... Why couldn't his powers heal others as much as they healed him...? Was he doing something wrong...?

Maybe he really should try training his abilities with an expert...

"Hmm... I hope so." He mutters, gently dragging his thumb across Eris' scar before sighing. Maybe he was just to late to heal this one properly. "... Make sure you come to me immediately if you ever get hurt, Eris. Okay?"

With that, he moved to rise back to his full height, patting her head.

"So, what'cha need, sport? If ya wanted to hang out, it's gonna have to wait a bit." He said, scratching the back of his head with a sigh. "I gotta stick 'round here until the sergeant comes and relieves me... We can go for some ice cream after that, though!"

Well she didn't, but they weren't exactly the best either. It would get her by and nothing more.[break][break]

"I... uhm... I should probably leave if you have other people coming. But I'll hold you to your ice cream promise, yeah?" She doesn't shy away from the headpat, even sticking a pinky out for him to take. Apart from the threat getting caught, she's probably toeing that line of taking too long to report back to the others.[break][break]

"Just message me when you're done!"[break][break]

Reiner huffs, reminding her to look over as the memory of that audible crack replays in her head.[break][break]

He blinked, before containing the impulse to slap his own forehead. How the hell was she gonna come looking for help if she was too injured, huh?

"Guess I've got no choice then." He said with a chuckle, scratching at his cheek. "Don't worry— I won't get mad, Eris. But I reserve the right to be worried."

That wasn't something he could just stop.

"Ah, leaving already? Makes sense." He said with a sigh, slowly rising back to his feet before pausing as he stared at the pinky extended towards him. A small smile spread over his lips, before he sealed his pinky around hers. "Yeah— Promise!"

If his phone was still alive?

He looked over his shoulder, before his eyes popped wide open at the sight of his phone flat on the floor.

"... I'll use my pokeNav."

Good thing he hadn't dumped the thing.

He turned his attention back to Eris, looking around with exageratted weariness before saying.

"Be careful on your way out, okay? Leaguers are tense right now, and you know how it goes with these League vs Rocket stuff." He ruffled her head again, before gently fixing up her hat. "Things are gonna get bad today, so be safe, okay? If you see Hideo, keep each other outta trouble."

Now, she knows that John Sullivan is by no means as violent as dorian westcliff, but if she ever had to find out that the blood of other people were on her hands again. If she had to bear the burden of knowing that lives had been taken because of her again...[break][break]

She smiles at Doug, quietly carrying their names in her heart. And as he helps readjust her hat, she finds that suppressing that will to push his hand away from it is far easier than expected.[break][break]

"I'll try to be careful." No promises on that, knowing what she's here for. At the very least, she knows this entrance seems to be covered by the military? "And ya don't need to worry about Hideo! Reiner and I will do our best to keep us out of trouble so you be careful too, yeah?"[break][break]

And like the little rat that she is, with a final farewell hug, she scampers away and leaves no trace.
