At the start of the trail leading deeper into the Safari Zone, Marcus surveyed the map of the park. Though it was not his first visit, his last one had been years ago, and he guessed some things had changed since then.[break][break]

"I guess we'll go this way," he muttered to his Growlithe, who stood patiently at his side, awaiting commands. An easy route wound through the woods and past some streams — nothing that seemed too difficult or would take too much time out of his day.[break][break]

When Marcus set off down the dirt path, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his hoodie, his Growlithe trotted beside him obediently, ears perked and eyes alert for any wild Pokémon.

Marcus and his Growlithe prowled down the dirt path into deeper woods. Above them, the canopy shuddered softly at the whimsy of the wind.[break][break]

Fluttering about the branches was a Rookidee. The small bird chirped a solemn song, calling for others of his kind. The cry attracted Marcus' attention. Pale eyes watched the bird as he hopped from branch to branch in an erratic pattern, seemingly unsatisfied with its perch.[break][break]

"Maximus, take it down," the man ordered. His voice was calm, his tone even.[break][break]

Yet the Growlithe sprang into action, knocking the startled Rookidee to the ground with TAKE DOWN. Marcus tossed his first Safari Ball when he saw the bird was not going to fly away.

After collecting the Safari Ball containing his new Rookidee, Marcus ruffled his Growlithe's ears. "Good boy."[break][break]

Then they strode off again, toward a clearing with a rocky outcropping in its center. An Axew lay basking on a large boulder. However, as soon as Marcus neared, the wild Pokémon raised his head.[break][break]

Maximus the Growlithe looked up at his master for instruction. Marcus nodded and gestured to the Axew. The striped dog barked a confirmation, then charged with FLARE BLITZ.[break][break]

After a brief scuffle, Maximus pinned the Axew to the ground. Marcus threw another Safari Ball.

Another successful catch. Marcus scooped up the Pokéball and gave his Growlithe another scratch behind the ears. Then they continued on.[break][break]

The chirping of Nincada filled the forest. Marcus found it a little odd; such chirping usually came out in full force later in the summer, not during late spring. But the environment of the Safari Zone was different, seemingly ever-changing. Perhaps the Nincada population had boomed recently.[break][break]

Ignoring the bugs, Marcus continued down the path, Maximus at his side.

A Galarian Farfetch'd crossed Marcus' path, dragging the enormous leek on the ground behind it. He regarded the Pokémon for a moment, trying to imagine it among his roster. But try as he might, the small bird and its evolutionary form were too out-of-place among his larger creatures.[break][break]

Aside from his newly acquired captures, Maximus was the smallest of his Pokémon. And Marcus had a feeling the Growlithe would soon evolve, anyway. They had been companions for years now. If anything, it surprised the man that his dog had remained in his unevolved form for so long.[break][break]

He continued walking once the Farfetch'd had disappeared into the tall grass. Another Pokémon interested Marcus more, and he wouldn't find it in that area of the park.

The forest around Marcus thinned until he found himself under open sky. He crested a small hill to find a rocky ditch on the other side, too small to be considered a crevasse or valley. There, at the bottom, a Honedge rested in the air, gently bobbing up and down.[break][break]

Marcus nodded at his Growlithe and gestured to the Honedge. Maximus picked his way down the slope with care. Silent footfalls brought him within attack distance of the wild Pokémon. Then he leaped, bringing her down with BITE.[break][break]

Marcus threw his final Safari Ball.
