THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

Girard gazed at the vast jungle, apprehension and curiosity at war within him. The entire landscape around him was lush and fertile, bursting with strange thickets of thriving flora he could not immediately identify. The trees were tall sentinels bearing down upon the Rockets who gathered at the jungle's threshold, alien chirping and chittering sounds coming from deeper within. The yellow sky gave everything an almost-sickly hue, contradictory to how robust the plant life seemed to be.[break][break]
Nothing about this place made any sense, but one thing was for certain: there were secrets to uncover here.[break][break]
Girard's keen amber eyes caught sight of thin stalks of what looked like bamboo. Was there a faint glitter coming from beneath them? He could not be sure at their current distance.[break][break]
"Do you see that?" He pointed towards the bamboo. "Perhaps a good place to start digging?"[break][break]
He glanced at nikkari hect. The other man had been here once before. Girard had sought his assistance when it became clear the rifts were places he ought to search for artifacts; Girard was no scientist or researcher, his expertise lied in the procurement of rare goods. Unearthing whatever might be hidden beneath the ground here - ruins of a civilization, perhaps? - could be quite profitable indeed.[break][break]
"I can send Rodger ahead to scout," he added. The Rotom bobbed up and down in the air next to him, eager to assist.

more questions than answers had come of his foray into the ultra crater. and like the insatiable fool he is, he's back again, though this time he is luckier with his contacts. there's no need to conceal his identity as ansel this go-around. he and girard have had dealings before.

"if you find any rubies around, it's alecto up to her tricks," he warns with a smile. the little gremlin had gotten them out of a pinch the last time they were here by placing a breadcrumb trail of power gems.

"be wary of the ground and where we step. i fell into a celesteela nest last i was here and i'm not looking to relive that encounter."

alecto starts digging with her sharp claws under his and girard's instruction. satisfied when she gets the hang of it, nikkari lifts his head and looks to their other companion: "any luck over there?"

[break][break] "Not yet," he answered truthfully to the third man that he was not familiar with. Girard Fraser had brought him along on the trip, likely to be their medical fallback in case anything went astray. "Wait."

Girard examined the unmarked gold coins, taking one from caden maher's hand and holding it up so that it would better catch the light. His prowess as a procurer and appraiser of jewelry and antiques meant he could immediately tell that there was nothing extraordinary about them.[break][break]
"A gold nugget," he mused. "Worth perhaps 5000 PD?" He handed the coin back to Caden. "Hold onto them, if you'd like. We can exchange them for PD at any bank when we get back. Unfortunately, they aren't exactly the sort of rare artifact I was hoping to find here." He flashed the other man a wry smile, then turned to his Rotom.[break][break]
"Rodger, scout ahead and see if you can find anything worth investigating," he ordered. The Rotom beeped in the affirmative, then floated off into the jungle.[break][break]
Girard released Darcy. The Houndoom sniffed the strange, humid air of the Ultra Crater, then looked up at Girard with a curious expression.[break][break]
"Help us look through the rest of this bamboo," Girard pointed at the other patches nearby. "Alert me if you find anything." The Houndoom grunted, trotted over to the closest bamboo patch, and began to vigorously dig through the dirt.

the hard earth offers up its goods. they manage to procure a gold nugget and nikkari frowns. here, in this place between worlds (another world?) they might find something as mundane as this. they come here for priceless and find something of value.

still, he counts their blessings. things are fairly quiet. alecto twitches and then leaps onto a few clustered stalks of bamboo. she goes up, and up, and up, swaying at the top as her weight threatens to snap the plant at its base.

her cackling is a sign that something is coming. and then he smells it. he's not entirely sure what it is, only that it stings his nose. it makes his eyes water. he calls his gremlin back down and calls out for girard.

"something's coming," he calls. more celesteela?

[break][break] what a phrase. caden had not thought about what he wanted in a long while, not after since his brother had offered him the golden ticket and he'd torn it to pieces right in front of him.

[break][break] instead of voicing his thoughts, the doctor merely takes the golden coins and pockets them. they jingle in his pocket, carrying it with a weight heavier than they were worth.

[break][break] "well," caden said to his musharna and hypno, who hovered nearby. "you heard him."

[break][break] and so they would go, if only not for the cackle uttered from nikkari hect's sableye that spells of disaster and his hypno's own FOREWARN. poisonous smog fills the air, and it takes caden a minute to realize it's source.

[break][break] celesteela.

[break][break] his hypno's PSYCHIC rears up in a makeshift shield, attempting to push the gas backwards to allow for enough time for them to escape. but the gas burns hot and noxious, licking the ground with flame.

Engrossed in the hunt for treasure, Girard did not react to the arrival of the Celesteela in time to avoid the noxious fumes; he would have been taken by the dangerous gas if not for caden maher's quick thinking. The PSYCHIC barrier proved effective in blocking the gas, but unfortunately for the trio, the dry underbrush began to burn.[break][break]
The fire grew, and Girard attempted to flee - only to trip on a root and fall backwards onto the ground. Flames licked at his pant legs and he let out an agonized breath as the heat grew in intensity. Darcy leapt through the burning grass, then grabbed onto the back of Girard's shirt with his teeth. The Houndoom heaved, pulling his master backwards and out of harm's way - momentarily, at least. The canine stood guard in front of the pawnbroker, ready to trample whatever remnants of the fire followed after them.[break][break]
Girard hissed in pain, clutching his right leg. The bottom of his pants had completely deteriorated, and the skin of his right shin had been badly burned. With a grimace, he took out a Pokeball and released Mortimer, his Galarain Mr. Mime.[break][break]
"Need a little cold," he managed, feeling suddenly clammy and lightheaded. Mortimer kneeled down, then pressed his hands to Girard's BURN. A FREEZE DRY sucked out the heat. It did not heal the wound - merely dried it and covered it with ice - but it would provide a temporary relief.[break][break]
Hopefully, Girard's companions would fare better against the sudden wild fire: maybe even put it out.

his warning is almost in vain, but caden quite literally saves their asses. but smoke plumes as the dry brush around them begins to catch. alecto scrambles up nikkari's back, sapphire eyes flashing with detect in an attempt to single out their foe.

meanwhile nikkari reaches for two more luxury balls on his hip. his vulpix emerge and startle at the sight. ianthe cowers away from the ice with a hiss, but coronobeth rolls in it. flames spin around her fur as she laps up its energy.

"ianthe, over there." they divide and conquer. crown snuffs out their right side with her fiery paws and ianthe whines; multicolored tendrils of light spew from her mouth and blanket the untouched brush with a veil of ice.

"this will slow it, but we ought to move. you good to walk?" he asks, looking over his shoulder at girard.

[attr="class","postbox"] his hypno's attack is swift, yet not swift enough. they suffer a casuality in the form of Girard Fraser. caden's lip twist into a frown as he witnesses the freeze dry try to suck up the heat.

[break][break] it is a bandaid at best.

[break][break] the doctor kneels down onto the grass, his own cheeks flushed with heat. this was not the area in which he was used to treating patients. at most, it was in the parking lot of the emergency room and there were always stretchers in sight to take them into the building.

[break][break] reaching into his pocket, he pulls out a burn salve. it was something purchased from a nearby pharmacy. luckily, it was the prescription grade stuff — something caden had prepared for emergencies, but this seemed as emergent as any situation. "rub this on your wound and take this," he ordered. in his other hand was a small pill of tylenol. "it will help with the pain."

[break][break] with that, caden stood up. he glanced over at his hypno, who had moved his PSYCHIC shield in an attempt to assist nikkari hect's two pokemon.

Girard needed no further prompting; he swallowed the offered pill immediately upon receiving it, then rubbed the salve gingerly across the raw skin of his burned leg. Gritting his teeth, he pushed himself to a standing position. The ice, salve, and pain killers would be enough to keep him going, and he was grateful for their aid.[break][break]
"Thank you," he nodded at caden maher, tone sincere. "We're lucky to have a medic with us."[break][break]
He eyed nikkari hect, but the other man did not seem injured. He was right though: they did need to move.[break][break]
"Let's get out of here," the pawnbroker agreed.[break][break]
Girard returned Mortimer to his Pokeball, but indicated for Darcy to lead the way further into the jungle. They moved as swiftly as the injured Girard could, creating distance between themselves and what remained of the fire. Girard limped along, doing his best not to be a hinderance to his companions. Sweat beaded on his forehead and he wondered vaguely what new dangers they might very well be walking into. Out of the frying pan into the fire...[break][break]
A buzzing sound caused Girard to snap his gaze up. Roger was zooming towards him, having returned from its scouting mission. The Rotom seemed excited about something.[break][break]
"I think Roger found something," Girard rasped. "I'm going to go find out what." He began to move in a new direction, towards some sort of...crater? in the distance.

coronabeth and ianthe are right on his heels, holding back the brush to stop it from catching as the troupe hurries away from the site. they make their way through the bamboo forest and this time he's careful where he steps, keeping a watchful eye on the foxes following behind him.

the danger, it seems, does not follow them. alecto takes over for his eyes, but he stays on edge. the celesteela are the biggest threat in this realm. there's little doubt of that. and he'd rather not relive falling in a pit trap of them again.

the ground dips. he pauses at the edge. coronabeth tests the ground with one paw and then shrugs, trotting forward brazenly. ianthe scrambles after her and nikkari. as he nears rodger, he realizes the bamboo have marks on them.

"it seems...these craters demand gifts of us." he smiles, bemused. "regardless, i think it's safe here. at least for the moment. we take some time to collect ourselves, investigate what we can, and then retrace our steps."

he's not one to push his own luck.

[break][break] it was the first time in a while that he had heard such a positive sentiment from another rocket. it made something bitter swell in his chest — this was the life he could have led, had CIAN MAHER not destroyed it. with a nod, caden joined the others as they skirted around disaster and sough an exit from this hell.

[break][break] they slow down as the ground dips beneath them, giving way to a crater. a frown pushes his brow taut; caden is not much for exploring, but he's glad that his companions seem curious enough for all.

[break][break] "messiah," caden says, nodding towards his hypno. "survey the area. anything we should beware of?"

Girard ran curious fingers over the divots in the bamboo stalks, feeling where the message had been carved into the malleable bark, as if reading braille. His expression turned thoughtful, if slightly troubled. He shifted his weight, the pain of his injured leg now a faded memory thanks to caden maher's offered medication, but the memory was still fresh in his mind.[break][break]
"This list reads like a riddle," he murmured. "Perhaps they are metaphors for specific Pokémon, or common household objects." He tapped his chin as he considered. "Five items, five craters? How do we know the right pairings?"[break][break]
There were clearly more questions than answers. He considered the possessions and Pokémon he had on hand. He did not think he had anything that fit the requested items, not even poetically.[break][break]
"We ought to go back to Hoenn and make an effort of collecting the right things to offer. I have access to many jewels, for example." What pawnbroker didn't? "Unless either of you have any better ideas?" He raised an eyebrow, turning to his companions.[break][break]
This first expedition hadn't necessarily been a waste for Girard. He'd gathered valuable data about the Ultra Crater: there were things of value here, it seemed. Most dangerous places were like that, but it was good to have the confirmation. Perhaps next time, they'd find more than mere nuggets.[break][break]
