[break][break] the doctor — the exiled doctor — grimaced, though thankfully much of it was hidden behind his mask. still, nothing could save the expression of resentment that glimmered like diamonds in his grayscale gaze. not that it mattered. desmond sloane wouldn't care. nobody would.

[break][break] he was just a pawn in the game, just like everyone else.

[break][break] the last pawn that everyone was ready to fail.

[break][break] "if you know me," he muttered under his breath. "surprised you accepted this mission to begin with."

[break][break] everyone else seemed content on saving face by avoiding him like he was the plague.

[break][break] regardless, the moment passed as everything else seemed to. whatever resentment or distaste caden might've had for his position was pushed aside in favor of the mission. he'd been raised a rocket. he knew exactly how this shit was supposed to work. he expected the rest of the drive to continue on in awkward silence, but much to his surprise, the other man struck up a conversation.

"why are you here, instead of there?" the words carry a subtle weight, an echo of concern that is practiced but feels real enough to pass. in the cool night air, it lands like a question caden already knows the answer to.

[break][break] "mint," caden says, the syllable rolling in his mouth, as he enjoys it being there. "i like your name."

[break][break] "it's cute."

[break][break] "mine?" he hums, not missing a beat as he threads their hands together. "is that what matters?"

[break][break] "we're rocket. our names, our existences, don't matter. we're just pawns in a game, aren't we?"

[break][break] this game - at least - is one that caden plays well. a weaving of false empathy, an illusion of warmth. he doesn’t care about the boy’s answer. but he does care about what it might reveal.

[break][break] certainly, this wasn't what cian had meant when he said he'd had to try. his brother had meant that he needed to try and leave. he needed to get his head out of the sand and try to do what CIAN MAHER and boruta maher had done.

[break][break] It occurred to Caden that perhaps he didn't know much about emerson whitlock at all. Well, he'd never really asked him what he did. Or what he liked to do, rather.

[break][break] Before he can say more on the topic, he feels hands pulling him downward. He blinks in surprise for a moment, watching as the other flattens down his hair, and — unexpectedly, a blush gathers in his cheeks. He coughs, looking away.

[break][break] Changing topics.

[break][break] "I thought you were an IT guy. Aren't you supposed to be fixing stuff?"

[break][break] As he says it, a CHARJABUG scurries along the path ahead of them, running over a collection of wires that lead to a larger tower, that crackles with electricity. Several pieces of electrical equipment are littered around it, and Caden leans down to inspect one appears to be a USB drive. He turns it over in his hand, looking at it.

[break][break] caden stared down at the small slip of paper that he'd been given for the mission. it was the first time that he felt like he'd been given anything higher than low-brow, grunt work. it was nothing as glorious as working under Lulu Flint 's dream project, but it was much better than spending hours slaving over marcus kotov 's billing paperwork. half of him felt that the old man just wanted to find reasons to keep him in the office with the amount of billables that he forced caden to file.

[break][break] leaning against the moving truck, the grunt waited for his partner to arrive. it was a simple enough mission. transport a shipment of pokemon from one warehouse to another.

[break][break] the only glimpses of his old life were with his flings, with desires so hedonistic that caden could not have hidden them if he had wanted. it was at the crux of his very being, to enjoy what was meant to be enjoyed.

[break][break] as he wades through all the beauty (disgusting, ugly, falsehoods of a dream that he could never have), the last thing he is expecting is the tears of a tearful boy.

[break][break] caden does not recognize him, because he does not care for anyone but himself, but he steps towards him anyway, drawn forth to him by that glimmering smile. he stands over him, pulling down his mask to reveal his face.

[break][break] "yeah," he says. "patrol change."

[break][break] "what is someone like you doing in a place like this?"

[break][break] he peers at mint frost properly then, curious.

[break][break] there is sometimes beauty in broken things, after all.
