Onyx is many things, but decent is certainly not one of them.

Their last few outings-- not dates, not dates, because that’s scary-- had him on the back foot. The tragic picnic. The carnival. A day in baking sweets. All things he’s either never done before, or never done in that capacity.

This? The smell of damp concrete, cheap beer, fried food? The scream and roar of an unruly crowd? The rasp of tape on his hands?

This he knows as well as his own name.

Bring something for protection, his inviting text had said, and not the sexy kind. Please for the love of god. Dress down.

It’s been so long since he’s competed with someone in his corner (if Andres shows at all, of course). It’s sort of thrilling, this edge-walking like there’s a bottomless pit on either side of the line: one where he doesn’t appear, and Onyx has to slug through his disappointment, and one where he does, and everything becomes electric.

He didn't know how to tell Onyx, so he didn't. But Andres didn't really carry anything for protection. What? Pepper spray? Knifes? He didn't bring out Chuchi. She'd too fat, and perhaps a little too valuable. He's not willing to risk it, So he just, keeps his head down. Keeps his eyes on the prize- or well- his date. [break][break]

The address is strange, but he follows the instructions to a tee and gets in. He's not meek, not outwardly. And at least one thing his growth spurt gave him was height, an intimidation factor. He's not an easy target. Not yet. He had to be careful to keep it that way until he could link up with Onyx, the one more familiar with this. [break][break]

It's like a sports bar on crack. Yelling and laughing. Beer bottles clinking and the smell- it made him hungry. Another reason to keep Chuchi out of this. It's easy pickings here. He's surprised, and also not when he sees a betting section. Live entertainment? Absolutely. [break][break]

But the easy smile as he approaches disappears as he reads the fighters about to go in. "Holy shit-" he murmured before he's jostled by the book keeper. Andres isn't one for cold feet either. And even if he doesn't know, hasn't see the competition, he puts a fat stack on Onyx. "250 easy." he said, flashing the cash and signing himself up. [break][break]

Despite his confidence, he turns away with his little ticket and begins looking for Onyx in earnest. "Whattheufkcwhatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatfuck-" he rushes

He certainly doesn’t carry a gun (Onyx doesn’t, either, as they’re rather antiquated in the face of creatures that can kill people with their minds or shoot fireballs out of their mouths). But he has to have something in his backpocket-- maybe Pepino knows a zappy move, or he has something with protect. Anything to keep the wolves at bay.

It never occurs to him that he doesn’t and inviting him to this would put him in danger. Never even crosses his mind.

But then again. Andres isn’t a baby. He’s not small or meek or fragile, any longer. Well, not as fragile. Still is, to Onyx, something terrifyingly breakable. But maybe that’s the nature of things you’ve come to treasure only after you’ve broken them: you’re always well aware of their fragility.

Those thoughts are absent from his head as he exhales, vacating his entire body of breath, zeroing in and focusing himself for the fight. Telluria stands next to him, flicking little pieces of metal off of her sharpened arm blades.

“No killing,” Onyx reminds her, popping his head side to side. Her response is a stout nod; she’s not one of his more bloodthirsty compatriots, thankfully.

The announcer’s voice crackles through the stadium, quieting the crowd for just a moment; he welcomes them all to tonights event, then introduces the fighters: his opponent, some hulked-up steroid head named the Barbarian, and then--

“Back from the grave, the brother of Death and twice as ugly, the Dark Twin, Onyx Straub!”

There’s a cheer from the crowd but there’s no fanfare from Onyx-- no arm-waving or jogging around the ring, no smiling or smacktalk or obscene gestures. He’s a fighter, not a performer.

He slips through the ropes and takes his corner, Telluria standing beside him.

The crackling of a mic announces the next fight, and the crowd gets a little rowdier, rougher. Andres finds it's almost controlling but he manages to push through, find a seat- or well spot, to watch the cage match. The opponent comes first and Andres watches, half nervous, half excited because he still only has a vague idea as to what kind of fight this is. And then-

He hears his name and it sends his heart beating faster. So he hadn't read wrong- bet wrong. Onyx was fighting. It's not farfetched to think he'd do this, but Andres can't help feel a tinge of worry. Until he turns to see the one eyed bastard himself and the man's as cool as cucumber. Deadly almost, but not quite. Not yet. Not like in Mauville all those months ago.

He slinks through, more aura than anything else. The Bisharp that stands next to him is unfamiliar, but she matched his vibe all the same. He's cheers are delayed as the crowd gets ready for the fight. Andres swallowed, before putting his hands around his mouth. "KICK HIS ASS STRAUB!"

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]The Barbarian looks like your classic roid-headed fighting man, broad-shouldered and bulging with muscle. His blonde fuzz is close-cropped and his feet and hands are wrapped as he waves the crowd into a fever pitch, his Incineroar copying his moves.

The MC has them take their corners. Just before the bell rings to signal the start of the fight, Onyx hears him. A wash of excitement floods through him, but the bell goes off, and he can’t waste time scanning the crowd like a newbie-- he’ll get pulverized, so he reroutes the thrill and hones it into purposeful focus.

It’s a no-holds-barred competition-- Pokemon are allowed to attack humans and, despite how foolish it might seem, vice versa. It’s Telluria’s job to keep the Incineroar from turning Onyx into a charcoal briquette.

They circle each other like wolves, not wanting to commit to the first move until they’re certain of an opening.

The Barbarian bites first, as Onyx knows he will. The thing about only having one eye is it screams HERE’S AN OPENING to your enemies with flashy neon signs, so he knows that’s where the guy is going to come from-- and he’s prepared for it.

The guy steps into his space and feints to the right; Onyx moves opposite him, to the left. His Incineroar is there, opening its mouth to blast a flamethrower over Onyx’s good side-- but Telluria is nothing if not efficient, and she charges across the ring, deflecting the Barbarian’s punch-- his fist ricochets off her shoulder with a horrible crunching sound-- and slamming the Incineroar in the abdomen with iron head driving him all the way back until he hits the ropes, where she tosses her skull like a bull and flips him over it. She’d ducked her head low enough so the blade on her helmet doesn’t disembowel the cat, but instead carves a nice clean slice up his midsection-- deeper than a scratch, but not nearly so bad as it could have been. Up and over the ropes he goes, slamming the six or so feet down onto the grimy tile floor below.

Onyx, meanwhile, has the Barbarian backing away and holding his crushed hand. His wrist is probably broken, too, not to mention his forearm; Onyx feints his own punch, but instead of following through, he shifts up on his toes and spins, throwing his right leg around in a vicious roundhouse kick straight to the side of the head that has the man staggering, spit flying as he goes.

Onyx bounces back and balls his fists, smiling; he didn’t really need to roundhouse kick the guy in the face, but he’d wanted to put on a little show for Andres. It was… nice, having someone important watching.

The MC narrates the fight, both giving context between booth fights: styles, win records, losses, stakes! Andres is aware of the stakes, aware of the vague blood stains on the arena. Aware that he's actually bet a lot of money on his companion who he couldn't be sure if he wished was fighting or not. Onyx was in his element after all. Why take that from him? [break][break]

The crowd cheers as the Barbarian surges forth to take a swing at Onyx and Andres' heart leaps into his chest. He holds back a gasp, watching Onyx move, smooth as butter on his own feet. His heart rate spikes as he turned to watch the Incineroar moved, with the Bisharp intercepting, but not before injuring the human trainer. "Oh shit-!" he exclaimed, as Telluria smacks into the dual type. [break][break]

His eyes are back on Onyx and his opponent. Just in time to see the man lift his leg damn near above his head and kick the shit out of the other man. He can see the red spit flying and in that moment, felt his heart jump to his throat. Eyes wide and locked on Onyx. And for a moment, he remembered watching Onyx battle all those years ago. Cheering him on just as fervently from the stands as before. [break][break]

"Let's fucking GOOO!" he screamed, as the man stumbled back.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Andres may have beat him at Pokemon battling-- there’s a strange dead spot in his soul when he thinks about it because it doesn’t bother him near as much, anymore-- but this? The feel of his heel connecting with a cheekbone, the smell of blood and sweat, the roar of adrenaline in his ears?

No one can take this from him.

The Barbarian staggers and catches himself on the ropes. Onyx doesn’t press the issue, not giving ground but not pursuing, either. He has his back to the side of the arena where the Incineroar went out of bounds--

--and there’s a roar from the crowd as the bipedal feline launches up the side of the ring and uses the ropes to vault itself over Telluria, flying through the air and aiming to land on top of Onyx.

Telluria moves like lightning. She rushes over and throws herself in the downward angle of the Incineroar, Onyx ducking back and spinning around with a curse. Telluria takes the darkest lariat, the move spinning her over. She uses her momentum to drive a night slash into the Incineroar’s jaw. The cat yowls, head snapping sideways, spittle flying; Telluria lands hard on her front.

Onyx hasn’t stopped moving. He’s dodged behind the Incineroar and while it’s standing over Telluria he scrambles up over its back and uses it as a jump-off point-- the crowd goes apeshit-- to launch himself at the Barbarian, wrapping an arm around the man’s meaty neck and throwing all his weight into dragging him down. Elbow to his throat, he begins to squeeze the air from him, ankles hooking one leg and bending it back at a painfully unusable angle. The Barbarian thrashes and flails, trying to dislodge him, but Onyx holds firm, twisting at the hips to use his opponent as a shield should the Incineroar try anything.

The big cat advances on them, seeking to aid its downed trainer-- but Telluria, somehow still conscious, pushes herself up with one arm and strikes out with the other, lacerating both of the cat’s Achilles’ tendons and sending it pitching forward with a yowl. The Bisharp dives on it, pummeling it without mercy, the cat hissing and spitting, claws striking uselessly off of plates of steel as it attempts to dislodge its attacker.

The yowl announces the incoming missile that was the Incineroar but before it can smash Onyx under it's weight, Telluria steps in while Onyx dodges past. And as Andres watches he can't help but feel a strange sense of admiration. Onyx was a fighter, always had been. But somehow, it's more controlled here. Skills honed after years and years of fighting. Of course he wouldn't be exactly like Andres remembered but it's still amazing to watch. All he remembered was pain and anger and explosive power. But this? There's skill, some kind of thought, and strategy put into the fight.

Onyx doesn't just lose his shit from the jump. It's lie ka different kind of battle altogether. One Andres isn't familiar with, but is enthralled by anyway.

As the pokemon occupy each other, Andres follows his fighter and screams "LETS GOOO!!" as Onyx soars through the air and latches onto the Barbarian. "GO NINI! GO NINI!!" he chants, with part of the crowd as Onyx began to tangle up his opponent.

The stomping draw his attention, swallowing hard as he watched the Bisharp cut deep into the Incineroar, watching blood spurt and the cat drop wit ha loud thump. His own eyes go to the MC and the ref waiting for them to call it.

[attr="class","sam-banner-up-blurb"]Onyx slowly feels his opponent’s body begin to go slack under his grip, but he doesn’t release him until the MC is physically prying at his arm and slapping at him to let go. He kicks the unconscious hulk away and stands, letting his own arm be thrust in the air in a show of victory as everyone goes insane around him.

The adrenaline begins to fade. The stiffness sets in. Old hurts ache.

Telluria stands next to him-- the injured Incineroar crawls over to his partner, mewling like an upset kitten-- and Onyx and his Bisharp head out of the ring; a team runs past him with a bucket of something that reeks of bleach and a mop to clean up the blood before the next bout.

Onyx lets his shoulder drag against the cold stone of the tunnel for a few moments, flagging, before he recalls Telluria and puts a shirt on. Out the back of the tunnel and the lockers a door cuts back towards the arena and the crowd.

Normally, he’d just go to a hotel, get wasted, and fall asleep.

But someone came through for him tonight. It would be rude to leave him waiting.

Onyx staggered off the ring without much of a winner's lap. The poor Incineroar crawls over to its trainer and Andres turns away from the more gruesome displays. He can't help but feel hurt for it, but he turns away before he lets it show too much. That kind of thing- it may be like blood in the water for a place like this. Instead he goes to cash out his winnings. Perhaps he should've bet more. Then Onyx's prize money would be bigger but he pushes that thought away. It was his first time in a place like this after all.

He pockets his winning in a crossbody under his jacket and pushes his way through the obnoxious crowd as the set up for the next bout. His heart is racing still, and he hadn't even been in the fight. He swallowed replaying the high kick and the jump in his mind over and over again as he went to search for Onyx. He sends a quick text of where's he waiting, moving with dogged purpose.

He sets up by the tunnel where he'd seen Onyx disappear, buzzing with energy. The next match sets up and the crowd moves on, screaming and yelling. Andres watches with vague interest before perking up. He grabs at his target, vaguely, pulling back once he realized that may be an aggressive gesture in this place. "Onyx!" he pushes closer. "What the fuck was that, Tiger?" It'd been the last thing he'd expected.

He looks up, smiling goofily.

Onyx reacts the way he'd expect and Andres is quick to soothe any sudden worries. "It's ok, we're good." he said letting the fighter move him. "I'm fine, no issues getting in or anything." he said moving in close. His heart flutters seeing the smile Onyx gives. It's oddly pure for what he just witnessed. [break][break]

But all the same, it flusters him just a bit. "Nooo! You!" he said putting his hands on his shoulders and shaking him gently. "You're the Tiger!! You kicked ass up there!" he said, admiration on full display. "C'mon, let me buy the champ his drink."

He drops his arms, turning a little sheepish as he manages to pull a laugh out of him. Andres lets the arm slide around his waist, allowing the champion to shepherd him where he liked. "You sure? Don't wanna do a victory lap?" He asked as the door closed, cutting off the crowd cheering with a metallic thump. [break][break]

"Better than where we were?" He asked with a small laugh. This entire entire looked about the same to him after all. But he's not nervous about it. He's with Onyx. And he's more than capable of functioning off well lit streets. As they walk away from the place he added, voice low, "You know, I bet on you?"
