The sand shifts and crunches under the treads of her boots as she walks along the beach, the wind pushes her hood off her head and rustles her unkempt hair, with an annoyed grunt she pulls the hood back up and adjusts the sword sitting at her hip. She wants to complain, but the Terastal Crystal that had emerged here was hardly even a week old, making it the optimal subject to study the Terastal Phenomenon. The less Pokemon interacting with it the better, she needed the cleanest energy signature possible for her research to bear fruit and most other Terastal Crystals got jumped on the moment they were discovered so trainers could harness their energy for themselves.

A strong breeze once more blows into her face, she grabs the hem of her hood to keep it from blowing down once more, but this time the wind carries a gift of salty seawater to splatter all over her glasses, yet another annoyance as she lets go of her hood to wipe down the lens. What she can complain about however, is the lack of resources that Rocket executives were willing to dedicate to her personal project. It seems like you've got to be a member of that MAGMA Division if you want any kind of attention to your theories in Rocket these days, meaning she had to piggyback off of an already existing project studying the Terastal Crystals and drag along another researcher much to her great annoyance. Enter Alba Evovae , a perfectly tolerable person who had no qualms with destruction of the explosive variety, but still an annoying reminder of the metaphorical ball and chain she was dragging around as she looks over her shoulder and glares at the young researcher.

"Would you pick up the pace already!? It's bad enough I've got to carry more than half your share because you're such a fragile little baby, having to slow down just so you can keep up is getting on my fucking nerves!" They absolutely didn't deserve this kind of vitriol being spat in their direction of course, but rarely did people actually get what they deserved in this world.

This wasn't Alba Evovae's body. It didn't have roughly cut short hair, but a carefully maintained braid. There were no callouses from manual labour, or scars and cuts from living in the end of the world. It was too young, too spry, too devoid of mild back pain, too unknowing of hardship for it to be his.[break][break]

It was also painfully devoid of physical fitness. Science, research, these had been his primary loves in life. Peering into laboratory equipment didn't require many muscles; if he could move around, that was enough to fulfil his work. He'd felt that limitation before, in the Ultra Deep Sea, but now that he had experienced what twenty years of swinging a giant hammer did to the body, it felt more suffocating than ever.[break][break]

"Hey, I'm only half of a fragile little baby, thank you very much. I have the strength, but you have the temper tantrums." Hm, maybe that was the sentence that was going to get him killed — though worrying about whether Xenon would do anything was like looking at a cloud and wondering if it would become a hurricane.[break][break]

"Trust me, I don't love this any more than you do…" Age became a weird thing when you'd mentally experienced two decades of time that technically didn't exist because it was all a dream. Physically in his twenties, mentally in his forties, and yet somehow he had the tired cadence of wheezing of somebody in his sixties. Maybe he didn't have to worry about Xenon killing him, because he'd just drop dead right there.

The thought of killing him for that remark briefly passes through her head as she glares at the scientist, but if she did she'd have to come up with an excuse as to why he was gone later, which just frankly wasn't worth the effort all things considered. Besides, he had been mildly helpful during their time in Galar, which while she didn't really consciously remember any of that, was still probably the only thing that kept him alive as she sighs and turns back around.

"Whatever. Just pick it the fuck up." Xenon grumbles as the wind once more tries to blow her hood off her head, at which point she just says fuck it and summons Cobalt to hop on her shoulder and manually hold the garment stead with her teeth. The Eevee for it's part seems rather chipper as it lets out a little yip and gently bites down on the fabric, she had her partners trained well for their purposes.

The readings were getting stronger as they trudge further along down the beach, presuming they were to actually reach the Terastal crystal without any further delays then Xenon would consider the day at least a partial success if she managed to get her reader properly attuned to the energy signature. Normally she'd have to rely on her Glimmora for such a task, the damn things seemed to naturally sniff them out with nothing but pure biology, but she didn't like relying on things that weren't made by herself. "Alright, what do you know about Terastal Crystals? You know, besides the fact that most idiots seem to really like using them for a pointless thing like changing a Pokemon's type for like a minute max." Honestly, what a waste of such a versatile resource.

"Sure, sure… I'll do my best." It really was annoying, the way his entire body felt like it could snap like a branch. It was a full body itch, ill-fitting clothes, an egg without a shell. A feeling that sat under his bones, festering in the marrow. The kind of thing you had to learn to live with, had to push to one side and force your attention to other matters.[break][break]

"Terastal Crystals were first discovered on the meteoroid 99943 Meteno. They're tough to break; from what I've read, the attempt to break the meteoroid with Primal Crystal machines just caused Terastal Energy to rebound back, and ripped open the rifts into the Wilds…" Though that was more a property of Primal Energy than anything.[break][break]

"A Tera Orb lets you channel Terastal Energy to Terastallise your Pokémon, obviously… But the current idea we're testing is the ability to simulate a universe." He talked as he walked, the aches in his muscles parting before his current project— well, not really 'his', but he was helping establish the RKS Simulation all the same.

"Correct, correct, and correct!" Xenon shouts as she spins around and points at Alba, a smile now on her face as they move into discussing the important things. "But even more importantly than that, is that where Tera Crystals are, Interdream Mist is closely associated with it! And where there is Interdream Mist, there are Ultramodern Paradoxes! And their less cool ancient cousins but nobody cares about those."

Coincidentally enough it was about now that they found themselves coming up on the Tera Crystal Xenon had been tracking, a deep blue spire jutting out from the beach as the waves lap at the crystalline structure. "Another important fact about these babies, is that Glimmora are often found nearby. I think they treat the things as some kind of energy source or source of nutrition, but the jury's still out on that one." Xenon releases Bismuth as she says this, the rock flower trembling as it senses the Tera energy roiling from the massive crystal and rolling towards it quickly. "Basically I'm just here to get some better readings on what exactly Tera energy is and its relation to Interdream Mist, let me know if you spot any weird pink roiling fog around, and scream if you find yourself getting attacked by robot Pokemon from the future. Don't scream if they're fleshy and from the past, I don't care about those ones."

What, as if he was going to be wrong about this? The basis of one of the more exciting projects he’d managed to sink his teeth into? But of course, she didn’t seem to care about any of that.[break][break]

“So, you think they’re actually from the future?” The link between Paradox Pokémon and the Interdream Mist was pretty much definitive at this point. They came from a tangible point of dreams and imagination… Was a place like that connected to time as they understood it? Were they born from the dreams of those in the ‘future’? Or were they born from the ‘future’ dreamt by those in the ‘present’?[break][break]

As he ruminated on that, Alba released his Iron Moth from its Poké Ball. It was a creature inextricably tied to the Terastal Phenomenon and Interdream Mist they were here to research; maybe it would be able to shed some light on something they might have otherwise missed. After a moment’s deliberation, he released Musharna as well; better safe than sorry.

"Why not? There's plenty of legends of Pokemon jumping through time, and we've literally perfected the science of bringing Pokemon back from the past. Why couldn't a Pokemon cross over from the future into the present?" She wasn't oblivious to the nature of Tera Crystals and their connection to the Interdream of course, the prevailing theory was that these Pokemon were simply the dreams of what those in the present imagined the past and future to be like, thus making them not 'truly' from the future but rather just the imaginary made real.

"But... to get into a bit of philosophy for a moment. Does it matter whether or not they're truly from the future?" Xenon looks at Alba seriously as she asks this, her joyful demeanor gone for the moment as she presents her question. "The future isn't a definitive thing after all, it's malleable and prone to change. There's a billion different futures out there made by a billion different people imagining what they want the future to be. All these Ultramodern Paradoxes are uniform enough that they have to come from the same kind of future, so what does it matter if it's an imaginary one or not? Every future is imaginary up until you actually achieve it. It's like the Glameow in the box, you don't know if it's alive or dead until you observe it. Same with these robots, can't know if they're real or fake until we reach the future where they exist."

She pauses for a moment as the scientist summons his Iron Moth and Musharna, adjusting her reader accordingly and motioning for them to get a bit closer to the Tera Crystal. "But if you want to be really technical about it. We've already reached the future where these guys exists. I mean, I'm actively working on making them from scratch. Give it a few years and Hoenn will be swarming with robotic Ultramodern Pokemon, maybe then I'll figure out how to send them back in time to myself to figure out how to study." The ultramodernist chuckles as Bismuth starts sniffing at the Iron Moth floating around, hopping towards it trying to get a taste of the strange iron beast that smelled so strongly of Tera Crystals. "Now that's a proper Ultramodern Paradox isn't it?"
