When you stripped away the mysticism of all this prophecy talk, it turned into simple clerical work. Dotting the Is and crossing the Ts, making sense of the story in the sky.[break][break]

Alba wasn’t much for prophecy, even after seeing and hearing it with his own eyes. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in it — there were stranger things in Hoenn that were demonstrably real — but he held little love for it. A supposedly inescapable future, written in broad strokes across the night sky he held so dear… At best, it was a blank canvas for people to impose their own interpretations and have them ‘proven’; at worse, it was a set of shackles trying to bind you to a certain fate.[break][break]

Neither outcome appeals to the astronomer very much, but even still, it would be a betrayal to turn a blind eye to their reality. So he marches on, connecting brilliant pinpoints to form the outline of the Winged King.

Alba slips into one of the offered stools, the Floette coming to rest on one of the close-by tables.[break][break]

“Physically, it’s doing well. It’s doing perfect, I suppose I should say.” No matter the burdens it’s saddled with, it always returns to that crisp full bloom, forever.[break][break]

“It seems to be happy enough, as well. I think it appreciates the fresh air.” A beat. “As fresh as the air down here gets, I mean.”[break][break]

It was the nature of Floette to tend to the flowers; perhaps this one would appreciate its own flowerbed to tend to. Perhaps it was the life blooming in elijah gardner’s man cave that had helped if flourish again, day after day.[break][break]

Here in this room, there was no life to capture its attention, only the endless parade of machines it did not understand, the cold steel that underpinned its cyclical life of experimentation.

“You’ve heard about me?” Alba quirks an eyebrow, a light smirk gracing his lips. “Good things, I hope.”[break][break]

It was quite flattering, really. His own achievements in science paled when compared to all of Oscar’s contributions. The man had created Rocket’s most popular open-source war machine project with his Genesect, after all. The RKS Simulation was impressive in its own right, of course, but Alba hadn’t been close to being the brains behind the operation of that particular miracle. He’d just been a pair of hands, and a surface to bounce off, nothing more.[break][break]

“The trip was fine, thanks. But I wouldn’t have minded a bumpier ride, if it meant I got to pick your brain.” It was the nature of a scientist to learn. That was the sacred creed all of their ilk took up when they first set on this path. Even if he had no interest in the subject, even if it bored him to tears, he couldn’t turn his gaze away from knowledge… Though he wouldn’t say the man in front of him now was boring in the slightest.[break][break]

“So, what’s the plan? Is Petalburg switching to Infinity Energy power, or are we more… kick-starting the system, or giving them enough power until there’s something more permanent?”

Once, Alba believed constellations to be patterns forced onto the stars by humanity. They were connect the dots puzzles that weren’t truly there, faces and tableaux that could only be seen on their muddy pinprick of the universe, that disappeared the moment you stepped out of it. They were too distant, too unchanging to truly embody the Archer, the Twins, or whatever other thousand-year mythos had been imposed on them.[break][break]

Nowadays, he wasn’t so sure. Perhaps the stars did dance across the sky, finding formations to reflect the fate of the world they shone down upon. Maybe heaven and earth were closer than the astronomer cared to admit.[break][break]

What a terrible thought that was.[break][break]

Nighttime was when the Space Center truly came to life, when the sun slipped away to open up the heavens that got lost in its light. And despite his distaste for the idea, as a scientist Alba couldn’t let himself be ignorant. Especially not after seeing the stars of his Galar’s night sky.[break][break]

So he sits at a desk, scrawling on a tablet screen while his Whimsicott gets dangerously close to ruining absurdly expensive astronomical equipment with cotton balls. Who would have known his degree would lead him to divining prophecies from the stars, like some ancient oracle…[break][break]

Like, God forbid, an astrologer.

It’s the job of a scientist to analyse and understand. Alba is not a powerhouse on the battlefield in the way that a beast like Hitoshi Inoue, or a veteran like Grigori Sokolov are. He can only hope to keep up by finding ways to bring others down. It’s kept him alive so far. Or maybe he’s just managed to stay lucky enough to slip under the radar of those who could crush him like an insect, if they willed it.[break][break]

The cold steel of his new right foot aches, as if warning of an oncoming storm; as if warning that those easy days are numbered. Though, isn’t that why he’s here in the first place? Staring into the eyes of pieces far more powerful then him, since turning back for safer won’t give him anything of value.[break][break]

…It’s hard to keep thinking about grim determination when watching someone who doesn’t know how to spell.[break][break]

Alba has to physically bite his tongue to not comment on how quickly the Underboss leaves him and Fenelle behind, swallowing whatever he was about to say for the sake of his neck.[break][break]

“If I deal with the Great Tusk, can you handle the Iron Hands?” The ancient Paradox, kicking against the floor as it prepared to charge once more. The future Paradox, straining against its bindings with its new surge of strength. His Porygon-Z spins up again, firing off a confusing Signal Beam to throw off its target, before the scientist hurls a Poké Ball to clean up shop.[break][break]

After the two Paradoxes have been dealt with, Alba takes off in a run, chasing after Cillian and the terrible, foreboding loud noises below. Barging into the sleeping quarters, he skims over the faces that had yet to rouse themselves, and decides what they need most of all right now is violence, someone who can deal with however many stowaways they’ve attracted.[break][break]

That, and someone who can keep the Winged King on a leash, no matter how loose it was, if it decides to follow the sounds of battle.[break][break]

“Wake up.” Alba shakes the slumbering Boundless — ‘violently’ would be appropriate if talking solely about Alba, but against the backdrop of violence Shred had seen this was not worthy of the word — quietly hoping he was not about to lose an arm for disturbing a Beast.

His love of things buried in the dirt keeps him grounded, easier to reach than even the likes of the Harbinger and Visionary, tied up in affairs far above him as they were.[break][break]

But the Admin poses a question, and the answer flows freely from the scientist’s lips.[break][break]

“A while ago, not that long after I joined this organisation, I was asked which Pokémon posed the greatest threat to Team Rocket.” Technically speaking, they’d asked about Hoenn, but the finer details were unimportant here. “I said the Swords of Justice did. The heroes of my childhood fairy tales, fighting valiantly for the sake of innocent lives.”[break][break]

He waves a hand, dismissively.[break][break]

“Back then, I suppose I still believed in those kinds of stories, if only a little. But after everything I’ve seen here, I’ve decided that good does not always triumph over evil; we do not let it. If those dogs would call themselves ‘heroes’, then I— then we will dull their sword and crack their shield, and put that title to the test.”[break][break]

So that this fairy tale might continue, for ever after.

Having avoided the worst-case scenario, getting put on ship-watching duty wasn’t actually so bad. The stars still shone, immutable, patiently waiting outside the window.[break][break]

And then the mist rolls in.[break][break]

Here and there, mushrooms start to sprout, glowing softly in the dark, almost like stars in their own right. Background noise of chatter and laughter fades in and out, like music on an old, scratched-up record. It badgers the dreamer like a toothache, like something he wishes he could just twist and pull out and hold in the palm of his hand.[break][break]

It’s only when Cillian Quinn speaks that Alba realises he’s been grinding his teeth, over and over. It is not possible for him or Fenelle Miller to stop him, so he shoots dem a resigned look before letting himself get caught up in the Underboss’ orbit.[break][break]

“We need to check the cargo bay, the Tera Crystal—” Alba starts to speak as he finally catches up to Cillian, though he clamps his mouth shut just as quickly at the sight of two charging Paradoxes. He stamps his right foot on the floor and a Porygon-Z emerges, limbs twisting around before it launches a Tri-Attack towards the rampaging Great Tusk.[break][break]

A spaceship was a remarkable feat of tenacity, strong enough to withstand the blistering temperatures of escape velocity, and the absolute zero of space. But it was also a fragile thing, where the wrong failure would send them spiralling into a lifeless void. If the Mist was thick enough to spawn Paradox Pokémon here, who was to say there weren’t more roaming around? Who was to say it couldn’t play havoc in other ways?

Ah, there they went. No, it was more accurate to say the pair was there one second, gone the next, fleeing with the kind of Extreme Speed Alba’s human eyes couldn’t keep up with. Instead of empty air, they left behind a gnawing thought that wouldn’t loosen its grip on the scientist’s mind.[break][break]

All throughout their scuffle, they hadn’t figured out what it was those couriers were carrying. Maybe it was integral intel. Maybe it was nothing at all. Unless by some miracle they had managed to drop their precious cargo on their way out, they were never going to find out now.[break][break]

The Eternal Floette shivers in the air, recovering its spent energy, looking more fragile than ever in more ways than one. Alba’s hands clasp it gently, letting it rest in his palms as he looks back at the other grunt.[break][break]

“‘Why’ what?” Fisher wasn’t asking questions, he was just saying a word.[break][break]

“Why did they escape? Because they had a way we didn’t account for. We nearly had them, as well…” But in that crucial final moment, they’d slipped just out of reach.[break][break]

“Why did I fire on them the way that I did? Because I wanted to finish things. Or would you have preferred if I let you keep breaking their ribs?” Alba speaks with that casual calm he’d used in their fight, answering hypotheticals as if he was having a chat back in the labs. His voice ripples slightly, though, with adrenaline, with worry.

“Shit—” The merriness in Alba’s voice vanishes as he scrambles for cover, lunging for his Dusknoir as a carpet of flame sweeps across the battlefield, heat washing over him even as he forces the Ghost-type to weather the storm for him. Hot air burns his lungs with each inhale, a reminder that he was alive, a reminder that he was inches from death.[break][break]

“Wow, that really… You really…” Breathless, he laughs to steady his nerves, grasping for his broken composure as he returns his Dusknoir to its Poké Ball in order to rest. “I guess that’s what I deserve for underestimating you lot.”[break][break]

He would have been fine trailing behind the surge of power in this fight, but if he didn’t catch up right now, he really would die. Or worse, one of them might escape, and the shadows would drag him to a place worse than death.[break][break]

“You want our best? You want to keep fighting? Then show me how you hold up in the face of eternity.” The scientist reaches for a new Poké Ball, and releases a prisoner.[break][break]

The Pokémon that appears is barely visible compared to the reaper it takes the place of. Fragile and drifting gently in the breeze, it was something that did not belong in a place like this. Innocently swinging a flower around, it seems to bask in the fresh sunlight, before—[break][break]

“Light of Ruin.” Before the copper stench of war catches up to it, snapping it from its brief moment of freedom. It turns back towards its Trainer, hesitant, but Alba simply gives it a wordless nod. The stamen points towards Keiko and Rex, like an accusing finger…[break][break]

And a cleansing beam sweeps across the battlefield, the very air rippling as it strains to get out of the way.

“Right, of course,” Alba lightly shakes his head, as if trying to wake himself up. That sounded about right… but reaching into his memory felt like grasping into a fog, only able to clearly see what was right in front of him. It was all there, but his mind swam lethargically, vertigo creeping up the more he tried to push.[break][break]

And so he stops, letting himself get caught up in the current of the pair he’d apparently been talking to. One of the fundamental rules of surviving a horror scenario was to never end up alone, and it was difficult for him to say that they weren’t in some kind of horror stageplay, with the audience of Ghost-types that watched over their every move.[break][break]

Even this destroyed statue, so perfectly shattered as to make it unrecognisable, could simply be part of their game. Leaving wasn’t an option — something Alba was bitterly familiar with — but this place did not have the acrid taste of sickly sweet mochi. His breath did not heat up his face; there was a path forward, even if it was an unclear one, unlike… whatever dim recollection he was tapping into.[break][break]

“What if we try breaking another one, then?” When Alba speaks, he looks to the spectral crowd, as if addressing them rather than any of the humans they’d trapped. He leans against one of the remaining statues, the one that flows like water, not actively trying to knock it down, but letting his weight rest against it.

There is a kind of creeping dread that comes from sitting at the poker table. Not from the prehistoric dragon trying to wreak havoc in a place mere inches away from the lifeless void, but at the possibility that he’s going to have to suffer through whatever was going on between Howard and Shred for the entirety of this trip. This game was no longer about winning (that was a lie it was always about winning), but about the absolute need to not end up stuck with those two late at night.[break][break]

…Though ‘night’ didn’t really exist out here.[break][break]

The scientist pulls his cards close to his chest as someone (or someone’s Pokémon?) tries to peek at his hand, though they manage to slip out of sight before he turns round to look at them.[break][break]

“Well, unless any of you have a hand like his—” Alba nods towards the Winged King— “It doesn’t matter if you’re talking Prism Tower or Littleroot Town.”[break][break]

It’s somehow a barefaced lie and a terrible pun rolled into one, and neither of them are especially good.
