The Rollout’s momentum gathers and gathers, smashing into the Ghost-type with ever increasing fervour. In another life, maybe the pair of them would have got along like a house on fire. In this one, they were simply trying to turn each other to ashes.[break][break]

“Disable.” Alba’s Dusknoir raises an arm, ready to lock-down the opposing Azumarill… and then it just hangs there, motionless, like a wound-down music box. The paralysis would only get worse the longer he left it, but breaking away to deal with it was its own kind of risk.[break][break]

A different tactic, then. Grigori fought with a kind of perfect brutality that the scientist simply couldn’t match, so he would find a different kind of offensive in order to keep pace. That guy was too eager to fight, but the other one didn’t seem as thrilled. And where there was reluctance, there was a crack he could use to tear her apart completely.[break][break]

“You know, if you don’t surrender right now, he really is going to die. Fisher’ll just keep going, and going… until he gets what he wants.” The thumps and crunches of their scuffle add a percussion to his persuasion, aggression to contrast the way he stares at Keiko, arms folded behind his back.[break][break]

“I’m not asking you to trust me; you can’t. But you can trust what’s happening right before your eyes, can’t you? Quit playing hero, and I’ll get your boyfriend out of here.”

There was something almost paradoxically comforting about Admin howard slayte losing his mind during takeoff. In the wake of Fox’s deafening anxiety, there was no room for Alba to jump at all the banging their ship makes as it leaves the world behind. The pressure of gravity comes for them, threatening to fold him in on himself, and then finally fades away.[break][break]

Weightlessness does not last long enough. There is brief freedom, where he feels himself unhinge from everything (except for the seatbelt tying him down), and then gravity switches on again, and it’s like he’s back on terra firma.[break][break]

He had been in space once before, as part of Cyllora and the Never-Rot’s mad plan to save Megalopolis, but back then the Penitentiary had robbed him of the power to appreciate it in full. So of course, the first place he goes is the window, to drink it all in.[break][break]

“With how far away those stars are, we’re not really that much closer to them…” Alba says as he approaches the window Makoto Kurumi and Fenelle Miller gather around. He says that, but even still it feels as if he could reach through that window and pluck them from the empty canvas.[break][break]

“The view is spectacular, though. Makes me wish I could be up here all the time.”

Why else would only the High King — and us, I suppose — manage to escape?” The rest were simply stock characters, figures meant to fill in a background, and nothing more. Even Alba could not list out the quirks and individualities of those that had been under his care over those years. They had been, and now they weren’t, and that distinction was what mattered for his own dream of a dream.[break][break]

“Is that so? How terrible. Freedom does feel nice. I’m sure even you could find it if you looked hard enough, though.” He himself needed all the freedom he could be afforded. Getting too caught up in things was never helpful when you held the stars as your ideal. Besides, for all the liberation Rocket gave, it had its own restrictions that were foisted onto its members.[break][break]

For the glory of Rocket. The scientist drains the last of his wine, letting the heat of the Ultra Desert beat down on him.

“Right, it’s probably just a story,” Alba smiles, though his tone of voice isn’t all that comforting. They were probably right, of course, but it was more fun to play into the idea that they were treading on long-forgotten graves, no matter where they went.[break][break]

…If he made it through the night without a curse being placed on his bloodline, it would be a miracle. As if in tandem with his thoughts, a bloodcurdling scream pierces through the air, making him jump and nearly spill his drink.[break][break]

“It was one hell of a scream, whatever it was…” Horrible, murderous death wails to keep the party moving? Once again, he can’t help but admire the organisers’ commitment to the atmosphere. “Oh, I do like Ducklett à l’orange…”[break][break]

It’s in the midst of that banquet when the field begins to shift, the atmosphere of the party shifting from playfully spooky to a little more macabre. Even amongst the guests themselves, things seemed a little less festive… But the scrawled blood messages were cliché, in a fun and camp kind of way.[break][break]

“‘You are not alone’...? What do you think that’s…” Alba’s voice trails off as he examines the graffiti on the wall, turning back to his—[break][break]

“Sorry, who were you two again?” His… companions? No, he’d never met these people before in his life. He was just going to share his thoughts with, uh… Hm. Maybe he’s had a little too much to drink. But he’d only had a single glass, and he wasn’t that much of a lightweight.

“Wow, that really takes me back… Though I guess technically, neither of you have met our eyes.” Simple conflict like that was for children and storybooks, of course. In the real world, you were only paid if the loose end was tied up, and people had hair-trigger tempers they liked to dress up as more important than that.[break][break]

“Sure, if you win, I can give you… fifty bucks? Of course—” ‘Rabbit’s voice is still light-hearted — though strained, as the Stun Spores work their malice — even as his teammate throws a freight train of a punch towards that pink-haired girl.[break][break]

“I’d say Fisher could beat both of you even if I wasn’t here.” Of course he’d failed to stop the machine. Why would he do something as silly as that? The thought had never even crossed his mind.[break][break]

Alba’s fingers twitch against hjs Dusknoir’s Poké Ball; a Luxury Ball, like the rest of them, something designed to keep his Pokémon amenable in spite of the terrible things he and Rocket asked of them. Then he clears his throat, and the reaper lashes out, intent on delivering Payback to the Azumarill that had crashed into it. Weighed down as it was, it couldn’t even begin to drift out of the way.[break][break]

It was a spiteful thing, decisively full of emotion that cut through the profile of an empty servant of the Spirit World — and more importantly, Alba — that it typically fit into. It was also slow, pushing through the gravity and paralysis, and seemingly deepening the rage in its red gaze.

“Well, that’s what I’ve heard. I didn’t even know this place existed until the invitation, so I’m not really an expert or anything… Makes for a good Halloween masquerade though, don’t you think?” It wouldn’t have the same vibe if there wasn’t the potential for ancient curses to be seeping into the woodwork, or whatever burial grounds liked to do to buildings.[break][break]

Alba orders a ‘Death in the Afternoon’, mostly because the name sounded fun, raising his emerald-filled glass to Aurelie’s with a distinctly non-Kalosian “Cheers!”[break][break]

He’s in the middle of enjoying his cocktail when a familiar white-haired man approaches, apparently a little rattled — sorry, not at all rattled — by the ghostly gathering.[break][break]

“Well then, welcome to the party! We were just talking about how there’s probably an ancient burial site, just under our feet.” Alba says it like a light conversation piece; his mask only covers the top half of his face, making it all the easier to see his perfectly innocent smile.

It was the final advancement of Porygon that Alba favoured; modified beyond what its framework was designed to handle, labelled a faulty piece of code because of its erratic, unexpected behaviour. Something capable of witnessing things beyond this mundane chunk of rock they walked on, and shunned precisely because of that. ‘Z’ as a final designation; that they would go no further than this mistake.[break][break]

“Mmm… Something like that. Though it emerged from a dream — or, maybe several dreams — rather than from lines of code.” Alba gives her a vague answer, and one that skipped over the interesting details of his darling Iron Moth, but this woman was here on a mission, and from the way she was talking didn’t seem inclined to step away from it. Maybe she’d be interested in an explanation later? Though if she was a fresh face to the region of anomalies, that would probably come with a dozen branching explanations besides.[break][break]

“A—” His mouth opens then closes like a fish as she shuts down any talk about apps.[break][break]

“The last time they made a physical Pokédex was, what… six or seven years ago…? When was 2017, again?” Alba was old enough to have had a physical Pokédex when he journeyed around the Unova region, years ago. Was it still there, buried under his belongings…? Even if it was, it would be horrendously out of date by this point. And if it even could be updated properly, it wouldn’t be able to connect to the Internet to do so, with all the new router security since then…[break][break]

“Okay, well… Maybe someone’s selling a second-hand one?” And an expensive laboratory computer is used to load up eBayleef.

There was a certain level of ruthlessness required to be part of Team Rocket’s science division, doubly so for a Head Scientist. They were progress unhinged from ethics, free from judgement, free to delve into research as murky as the depths their lovely submarine sank to.[break][break]

The Eternal Floette was a symptom of that. Something blessed with immortality, imprisoned and forced to hand out infinity until either it or its captors fell apart.[break][break]

Maybe it’s nothing more than a game of chance, but if we can figure out how to better those odds…” He lets the end of that thought hang in the air, for the Underboss to dwell on as he wished. It wasn’t that fate and fortune didn’t exist, but there was an underlying logic to everything, even the most arcane of rituals.

The name ‘Paradox’ implied something that fundamentally didn’t make sense. They were Pokémon that had crawled out of the Interdream Zone and just… stayed, as if they had always been here, as if they were ordinary wild Pokémon you could capture. They were still a relatively rare phenomenon, but the fact that they existed at all was a scientific miracle.[break][break]

Dreams were made out of mist and prayers; intangible things that drifted away the moment you tried to grasp them. You found them when you slumbered, and then spent your waking hours trying to chase those fading memories, holding on tightly to what they once were. And yet sometimes, things took on true, physical form, breaking down that barrier… somehow.[break][break]

He needed to know how. How to seize hold of a dream and chain it down, to save it from obliviation.[break][break]

It was the other way round, if anything, the hierarchy of their organisation placing the Black Dog on top. The more Alba stared at the invisible floating orchestra, the more he was convinced… that it was just a band of Ghost-type Pokémon, the same way there were Ghost-types drifting here and there as spectral servants. A bit mundane for his tastes, but there were other strange things about this mansion. Portals to other worlds, huh? What was that all abou—[break][break]

Whatever he was about to think about vanished completely as someone barrels into him, nearly knocking him to the floor completely if it wasn’t for her trying to steady him.[break][break]

“Don’t worry about it, I’m fine.” He was kind of sore, actually, but it wasn’t really worth making a fuss about.[break][break]

“But a drink…” He side-glances back to the table where Howard and Cillian— weren’t there anymore…? Well, whatever. They were grown men, they could go wherever they wanted. Under the masquerade mask, he walked in the strange place in-between personas; not quite Rocket, not quite civilian. Alba’s muscles spasm where the spores make contact, leaving him trying to wrest control of himself as these two… random strangers? Accomplices to the recon team? As these two whatever they were tried their hit and run. He flags a little behind Grigori’s hound-like pursuit, trying not to get left behind.[break][break]

“Well, I hope you’re getting hazard pay. Do you still get paid if you lost your delivery?” Maybe they were delivering an old lady’s knitting needles that she’d had to leave behind when war came to her doorstep. Maybe if they tried hard enough, they could solve this conflict with peace and love, as well. And maybe if they let a pair of suspicious couriers run off with their even more suspicious delivery, they wouldn’t get torn to shreds by whatever Rocket leader they had to answer to.[break][break]

“Don’t worry, I’ve got it. Dusknoir?” His Pokémon moves sluggishly, fighting against the paralysis wracking its body, before the Pressure it exudes suddenly intensifies, becoming an oppressive Gravity that tries to smother the couriers’ chance of escape.[break][break]

“Let’s stop and think about this, okay? Before we do something really stupid.”
