It’s true; really, it would have been easier to just sign up for the training sessions instead of going through all of this. There was a reason he'd arranged a meeting, though — multiple reasons, really, though he was keeping them to himself for now. They were like outfits in a wardrobe; a choice to be made with the situation in mind.[break][break]

So he says nothing, and lets the conversation move on to his questions. There was something he wanted to know, after all.[break][break]

“Is that so…?” Was Alba disappointed with that answer? It was hard to tell by the tone of his voice; at the very least, the Beast's answer had interested him.[break][break]

The world is ending. Look at it slip away. But if they die... If fate is undone, everything will go on like it was meant to. Why should a dream be so fleeting? Why should a world not be allowed to rise from the ashes? All of this, all of this was but a split second in the world they had come from. Letting it play out for a while longer wouldn't harm anyone. There would be another way for those who wanted to leave to leave. And if there wasn't, why should he give a damn? The lives of the many outweighed the lives of the few; wasn't that considered the most moral view on the world?

You are back in your dream-self, your old self. It's like wearing a glove that fits you after eon of having your hands bound by shackles. Somewhere, that 'real' branch of you is finishing an exhale, a single breath that has been stretched over twenty years. Above, the Skeleton and the Black Knight war with each other, the world an afterthought. In a few [minutes? seconds?] a pillar of light will descend and erase Helia, a girl you have raised from infancy 'til she was old enough to make her own way in life.

She will not 'die', because to say that scorching ray 'kills' is to say it thinks about its victims at all. She will not 'die', because at the end of all of this there will be a single person in all of creation who will mourn her. So you run, through the chaos, looking for where you know she will be, stumbling through things that don't matter, things that will resolve with or without you.

'Come with me.' There is not enough time to explain why she must, but Helia trusts you, and trusts the urgency in your voice, to do as you say. The pillar of light crashes down onto nothing more than empty earth.

And across the way, you see another of yours fall, swallowed up by poisonous sludge. The war carries on without them. And the dream ends.

Sleeping In Shadows

“Oh, is that right? Honestly, I’m not too familiar with Shadow Pokémon as a whole… I guess it’s been a learning experience for both of us.” It was unfamiliar yet familiar territory for both sides of the partnership.[break][break]

“Don’t worry, I won’t. I knew what I was getting into when— ah, I don’t think I explained that yet.” It wasn’t personal, of course it wasn’t. The fact that he’d retrieved his partner was proof of that, wasn’t it? And Cillian’s experience supported that. It was a learning experience for both of them… learning to navigate the various changes without falling apart.[break][break]

“Musharna? Use Shadow Storm.” He instructs his Pokémon as if it’s already completed his task: his voice holds the gentle arrogance of someone who is sure he will not be disobeyed. He is not; Musharna’s Dream Mist darkens and darkens, churning into an umbral tornado that sweeps across the lab. It doesn’t want to harm one of them, and doesn’t dare harm the other; everything else is attacked indiscriminately.[break][break]

“The dream made me choose: purify it, or let it remain a Shadow? I think you can guess the choice I made.”

Tempest considered himself a shield, but in the grand hierarchy of Rocket, that shield would surely be considered more valuable than the soldier it was protecting. If one of them had to be sacrificed, the organisation had a clear opinion on who the ‘better’ choice was.[break][break]

Not that either of them were actually going to die. Sure, it was ‘possible’, but it wasn’t going to happen.[break][break]

It always feels a little foreign, using someone else’s Pokémon, but they take off just fine. The low hum of Tanwyn’s wings undercuts Alba’s voice as he talks through the radio.[break][break]

“‘Highly recommended’? I didn’t know they liked me that much…” There were people far more prolific than him, making waves bigger than he was, in science and shadier things besides. On the other hand, he wasn’t a complete unknown anymore… maybe someone had put in a good word.[break][break]

“Well, I moved to Hoenn a couple of months before the Battle of Dewford. I'm from Opelucid, over in Unova.” It shows in his voice. The Opelucid accent tinges the Unovan with a kind of timelessness; rural and urban, all at once.[break][break]

“Studied back in my home region, and that was enough to get a job in Mossdeep… It's not all that exciting a story, unless you're interested in reading a few hundred pages on the likelihood of extraterrestrial life. How about you? How did you end up diving for long-lost shipwrecks?”

What, as if he was going to be wrong about this? The basis of one of the more exciting projects he’d managed to sink his teeth into? But of course, she didn’t seem to care about any of that.[break][break]

“So, you think they’re actually from the future?” The link between Paradox Pokémon and the Interdream Mist was pretty much definitive at this point. They came from a tangible point of dreams and imagination… Was a place like that connected to time as they understood it? Were they born from the dreams of those in the ‘future’? Or were they born from the ‘future’ dreamt by those in the ‘present’?[break][break]

As he ruminated on that, Alba released his Iron Moth from its Poké Ball. It was a creature inextricably tied to the Terastal Phenomenon and Interdream Mist they were here to research; maybe it would be able to shed some light on something they might have otherwise missed. After a moment’s deliberation, he released Musharna as well; better safe than sorry.

“How cryptic…” Unnamed barons with unknown power from an untold past, was it…? Just the power would have been fine, really; Alba wasn’t really an archaeologist, but it was the nature of shifty people to be interested in shiny new toys. Maybe it was some clearance thing? But he couldn’t really afford to climb the ranks of the government… People got too nosy when you were anything more than a regular old scientist.[break][break]

Well, so be it. There was still more to the palace, so there wasn’t any need to throw in the towel on that curiosity just yet. There were clues as to what kind of power it was, at least; the false curtains and broken edges were illusions, or at least parts of illusions. ‘A world long past’ didn’t say exactly how old this place was, but they’d been able to maintain this place even after they’d died out.[break][break]

“So, who were these barons? When did they rule; do we know their names?” The Mirage Palace was well-preserved, but at the same time felt perfectly lifeless, as if it was a model replica of itself. A thing meant only as a decoration, not something to be lived in… So had those signs eroded away with time, or had it just meant to be a monument to their power, and nothing more?
