Alba was not typically one to speak about his history; it was all a region away, and beyond landing him a cover job at Mossdeep’s observatory, the shadow it cast over him was a distant thing. Suffice it to say, it was neither a wise nor kind man that had chosen to leave Unova behind for the constant chaos of Hoenn and Team Rocket. He had abandoned that path when it was clear the world did not want to make a hero of him.[break][break]

“It does seem impossible, right? Maybe there’s some trick to it we haven’t discovered yet. Then again, we did have a Pokémon that governed eternal life, to my understanding. Rule-breaking anomalies might be our regional export.” Alba was not an expert on Xerneas, and was not a Beast he had crossed orbits with. How it did whatever it did was mostly rumour and guesswork to the astronomer.[break][break]

“I suppose that’s part of what I’ll be up to; figuring out what makes it tick, seeing where its limits lie. It’ll still need to serve its role as a battery, of course, but I’m sure there’ll be plenty of energy left for myself.” Infinite energy represented infinite potential. That tiny fairy was his best hope for plucking a dream from the void.

It's fortunate that his berry garden has been relatively untouched by the ravages of war. Recovering from his injuries as he is, his Appletun does the majority of the work of reaping the harvest, while its trainer watches on. It's a momentary peace; there is much and more for him to do, for both Team Rocket and for himself. For now though, Alba lies back, and lets the dull ache wash over him, like the waters that had nearly swallowed Sootopolis.

Last holiday season, Admin had gifted Alba a bottle of Kantonian wine, which he’d kept unopened for the right occasion. Sitting here in an alien desert after having survived the turpitude of war seemed like a good occasion to break it out.[break][break]

As it turned out, the Cursed had good taste in vintage.[break][break]

“It’s a rechargeable battery, essentially. It can’t hold an infinite amount of Infinity Energy, but even if you drain it completely, it’ll just regenerate in time.” In another life, maybe Alba would have become a full-fledged professor, instead of the kind of doctor that performed shady experiments in an even shadier submarine. In this life, that possibility was relegated to explaining an immortal fairy, treated as little more than a power source, to a man with his fingers in all manner of wretched business.[break][break]

In the last few weeks, it had probably seen more sunlight than it had in the last few years. It danced around the orchard, conjuring a Grassy Terrain to bolster its attempts to draw out the potential of these plants.

Exodus



It wasn’t too hard to understand the reasons behind the methods. The body was a machine, and martial arts techniques were a way of calibrating that machine for violence. Footwork to keep balance, striking form to maximise kinetic output… Understanding that didn’t make it much easier to actually angle himself in all the right ways, but it did mean there were few questions that came to mind at the end of their session.[break][break]

Still, there was always some kind of mystery to pick at, especially with a distant black hole like Zev Harcourt.[break][break]

“What got you into all of this, anyway? Like you said before, most people are fine just fighting with their Pokémon.” He quietly drums his mostly-empty bottle as he speaks.

Heat washes over him, followed by the stray fury of Primal Kyogre. It is a narrow mercy — not one carried by ’s sure fate — that it is a glancing blow, but even a glancing blow from a god is enough to fracture bone, and further break a body.[break][break]

But the false Palkia shatters back into its true form, and beneath his mask, Alba smiles despite the pain. Floette lands in the palm of his hand, shuddering like an animal in its death throes, and he curls his fingers to keep it from being swept away in the currents.[break][break]

“Dusknoir.” His pet reaper is loosed from its Poké Ball, and it carries its bedraggled trainer to the Black Dog and his Lapras, a Pokémon better suited to navigating the churning waters. He clings to it the way driftwood clings to a person, wreckage tangled up in the spines of a shell.[break][break]

A Pokémon trainer’s power was in the assets they could wield. The Eternal Floette had spent itself at his command, in his attempt to slay a god, but there were others at Alba’s disposal. Half-dead, but not dying, it seemed such a waste to fall back now, to acknowledge weakness instead of pushing through.[break][break]

Contractual obligation said it was Alba’s duty to defend Team Rocket. And besides, a battlefield was far more interesting than a medical bed.[break][break]

“Keep it right where it is…” With an outstretched hand pointed at Kyogre, Dusknoir intensifies Gravity, trying to ensure that and ’s lightning strikes true.
