The sparring area of Team Rocket's training facilities was familiar territory for Zev. He visited it frequently, sometimes for personal reasons and other times to teach. On that day, his purpose was the latter, though he doubted his new pupil would last very long. [break][break]

Footsteps heralded the arrival of the young man in question. Zev looked Alba Evovae over with a critical eye. He'd instructed the grunt to wear loose, athletic clothing and to bring a bottle of water. Everything else they needed was already there in the training center or in the duffle bag Zev had brought. [break][break]

"Have you done any kind of exercise or sport before?" he asked Alba. Scientists were notorious for sitting behind machines all day, their physical potential wasting away to nothing.

“I used to, but… That was a while ago, now.” Back when his body was twenty years older than what it was currently.[break][break]

The Alba Evovae of today, of course, bore more than a passing resemblance to a willow in winter. The most strenuous activity this man had ever done (in the physical world) had been running around like a madman during the Battle of Dewford, and on the Resurfaced Island. The workout clothes might have helped obscure some of that, but somehow they still fit ill on him as he stood there with his water bottle and his hair tied in a bun.[break][break]

(He wore it like that partly so it didn't get in his face during training, and partly because he was slightly worried Zev would demonstrate how easy it was to strangle someone with a braid.)[break][break]

“Probably best to start at… the very bottom, honestly,” Alba said, casting an eye across the room. Wow, he had actually never been to this part of the sub before!

At least Alba was honest. Zev gave a curt nod of his head, an indication of how seriously he was taking the grunt's request for training. "Then we'll start with a physical test. We'll measure your speed, strength, and endurance. From there, I'll decide on your first lessons." [break][break]

The test was simple: As many push-ups as one could do in a minute. As many pull-ups in the same amount of time. A sprint on the treadmill for five minutes to gauge speed, endurance, and heart strength. [break][break]

Zev walked Alba through each one, demonstrating what he expected to see and judging what was shown to him. He recorded the digits on monitors and counted when machines could not. [break][break]

When the test was over, Zev sat down on an exercise bench. It was Alba's signal that he could take a break, sit, and drink as much water as he required. The Beast reviewed a paper numbered with stats. [break][break]

"How was that? Too easy? Too hard?" he asked, not looking up.

How exactly did Alba Evovae, chronic non-exerciser, stack up against the trials of a man who’s entire line of work was to be built more like a predator than a human being? The answer might (not) surprise you.[break][break]

The pushups were truly dismal. He’d gone into them with practically no understanding of the form, almost as if the last time he’d even tried to do one was a decade ago. The pullups were better in the sense that his movements were (a little bit) practiced, but he also only just had the upper strength to actually do one.[break][break]

As for the treadmills—[break][break]

Actually, he wasn’t horrible on the treadmills. It would be child's play for someone like Zev Harcourt to catch up to him, but a substantial amount of exposure therapy over the course had at least given him that much.[break][break]

There’s a solid few seconds pause after Zev’s question where Alba chugs the rest of his water, then wipes away altogether way too much sweat from his brow.[break][break]

“Yeah, that was pretty easy.” The breathless voice makes up for the straight face he wears when he says that.

Zev raised an eyebrow at Alba but made no comment on the younger man's attempt at stoicness. It was plain to see that Alba was completely wiped, physically. They would achieve little else from strength lessons that day. [break][break]

"In that case, come with me to the mats." [break][break]

Setting aside the paper, Zev led his pupil to the back of the fitness center where blue sparring mats were laid out in a wide square. When he reached the center, he turned to face Alba and fell into a fighting stance. [break][break]

"This is the basic fighting stance for Mixed Martial Arts, which encompasses disciplines like jiu jitsu, boxing, and muay Thai," he explained. [break][break]

"Feet should be hip-width apart, with your dominant foot in the back at an angle. Arms are raised to protect your face, but shoulders are relaxed and knees are slightly bent." [break][break]

Zev nodded at Alba. [break][break]

"Now you try it."

Well, this seemed to be going fairly well. The natural distance between man and Beast made it hard to discern where exactly Alba fell on Zev Harcourt’s inscrutable scale, but it was at the very least going, which had to meant the other man didn’t think of it as a complete waste of time.[break][break]

“Right…” Simple enough instructions, right? He wasn’t a fighter (well, wasn’t a fighter yet), but putting his limbs in all the right places had to be easy. Feet, legs, arms, shoulders: getting into position, step by step… After the gauntlet of physical testing, something more technical sounded more up the scientist’s alley. What was this, if not following a process, if not testing the hypothesis of ‘can a lab-bound rat fight like a dog’?[break][break]

As he raised his arms, Alba’s hands slipped into some half-forgotten motion, curling around thin air as if vaguely wielding a weapon. An oddity in what would otherwise be decent form for someone’s first introduction to the art.[break][break]

Alba's form was slightly off, his arms raised as if he were wielding a weapon instead of empty fists. Stepping up to the younger man, Zev corrected Alba's positioning, forcibly making the adjustments. [break][break]

"It's hand-to-hand combat, not melee with a sword," the Beast said as he stepped back again. He nodded then, satisfied. "Now I'll run you through basic drills." [break][break]

He started with footwork, showing Alba how to move forward, backward, and side to side without crossing his legs and risking a stumble. Once Zev saw that the grunt had gotten the gist of it, he moved on to the different strikes, emphasizing technique over power. [break][break]

At the end of the session, he reached for his water bottle, signaling that Alba could do the same. "Do you have any questions about anything we went over?" Zev asked between gulps.

It wasn’t too hard to understand the reasons behind the methods. The body was a machine, and martial arts techniques were a way of calibrating that machine for violence. Footwork to keep balance, striking form to maximise kinetic output… Understanding that didn’t make it much easier to actually angle himself in all the right ways, but it did mean there were few questions that came to mind at the end of their session.[break][break]

Still, there was always some kind of mystery to pick at, especially with a distant black hole like Zev Harcourt.[break][break]

“What got you into all of this, anyway? Like you said before, most people are fine just fighting with their Pokémon.” He quietly drums his mostly-empty bottle as he speaks.

The casual glance Zev cast in Alba's direction hid a childhood that belonged in the shadowed pit of his memory. At the same time, he knew the stock explanation of passing interest rousing into a lifetime's passion would not satisfy the grunt's curiosity. [break][break]

Alba knew better than to accept the answer that had satisfied Zev's past coaches and peers. [break][break]

"I am not like most people," the Beast said matter-of-factly. "And it is much more satisfying to feel the crunch of bone beneath my fists than to watch from a safe distance." [break][break]

Uninterested in entertaining the topic further, he started for the door to the fitness center, expecting Alba to follow. [break][break]

"Tonight, I'll email you a training plan. We'll meet here three days a week for a mix of cardio, weightlifting, and drills. When you start showing improvement, we'll start sparring."
