They called him the Black Hand. Clients praised his brutality and efficiency, remarking that his results were worth the high cost of his skills. They never commented on his unnerving politeness, intense aura, or the way his smile never reached his eyes.[break][break]

Word is, though, that the Black Hand left Kanto three years ago. Some say he finally died on a job, while others simply think he got bored of his old territory and left for new hunting grounds. With the region under Team Rocket’s absolute control, there’s little joy in gunning down sheep where the wolves rule uncontested.[break][break]

Two years ago, a new bar opened in Slateport. Howling at the Moon. The owner is a newcomer to Hoenn, a man named Zev Harcourt. His neighbors comment about how kind he is, always saying hello and lending them a helping hand. The bar’s regulars say he knows them all by name and will spend a few minutes chatting with them every night. He’s a nobody. Just an ordinary guy. He wouldn’t hurt a soul.[break][break]

Every so often, though, someone unfamiliar shows up at Howling. The bar regulars don’t pay any attention to them, or to the way staff usher them into a back room. Zev meets them there, and they talk business. He picks up the manila envelope they slide to him from across the table, flips through it, memorizes the faces in the photographs. They haggle a price, then shake hands.[break][break]

The smile never reaches Zev’s eyes.
