machines hummed at a pause. journals and folders sat stacked on several surfaces, along with stray tools here and there. in the center of her lab was a large megalopolan battery, retrieved on a mission in the ultra plant with Fenelle Miller . it rested, waiting for further study.[break][break]

it was a different battery she was interested in that day – one which was much more familiar to her, and the man who newly possessed it, who was not very familiar at all. their meeting was far overdue, but better late than never. there was an important invitation to be extended.[break][break]

the smell of coffee wafted. a mug came up to her lips, cold after having been forgotten about for an hour, but that was just right for her.[break][break][break]

It's the quiet tap-tap-tapping of a cane that gives Alba away. The Battle of Sootpolis had tested him; the way his weight rests on his crutch betrays his incomplete recovery. But he was alive, and the arduity had changed him for the better, even as scars still sew themselves shut across his body.[break][break]

There was work to be done, and he was whole enough to do it. The war was in a lull as both sides licked their wounds, but it was a temporary thing; he couldn’t be idle, especially when one of his direct superiors had reached out to him.[break][break]

“Head Scientist Flint.” The white-haired man inclines his head as he steps through the laboratory door, one hand in a pocket of his lab coat while the other clutches his cane. The Eternal Floette floats close to his shoulder, clinging to its flower as it surveyed the room.[break][break]

“How are you?” The standard pleasantries to fill the time before they turned to more important things.

lulu set her mug down, heels striking the floor sharply as she went over to hold out a hand. she had the kind of nice smile that hid not so nice things behind it, sinister beneath a pale veil of professionalism.[break][break]

There was a certain level of ruthlessness required to be part of Team Rocket’s science division, doubly so for a Head Scientist. They were progress unhinged from ethics, free from judgement, free to delve into research as murky as the depths their lovely submarine sank to.[break][break]

The Eternal Floette was a symptom of that. Something blessed with immortality, imprisoned and forced to hand out infinity until either it or its captors fell apart.[break][break]

“I’m up and walking, and—” His right foot taps against the ground— “Mostly in one piece. Well enough to be working again, and there are much worse things I could be than that.”

lulu glanced down at the tap of the astronomer’s foot and back, wondering if he’d lost a limb – but it wasn’t like her to pry. “indeed,” she said simply. her houndoom set its head in its paws, though red eyes lingered on alba.[break][break]

her hand raised to gesture at stools. ”we can sit, if you’d like. i’d have invited you to my office – it’s a bit comfier – but i wanted to show you something.”[break][break]

without an answer, she began wheeling stools over to a workbench as a makeshift desk, still speaking, ” i’m aware you’ve come into the possession of the eternal floette. how is it doing?”[break][break]

Alba slips into one of the offered stools, the Floette coming to rest on one of the close-by tables.[break][break]

“Physically, it’s doing well. It’s doing perfect, I suppose I should say.” No matter the burdens it’s saddled with, it always returns to that crisp full bloom, forever.[break][break]

“It seems to be happy enough, as well. I think it appreciates the fresh air.” A beat. “As fresh as the air down here gets, I mean.”[break][break]

It was the nature of Floette to tend to the flowers; perhaps this one would appreciate its own flowerbed to tend to. Perhaps it was the life blooming in elijah gardner’s man cave that had helped if flourish again, day after day.[break][break]

Here in this room, there was no life to capture its attention, only the endless parade of machines it did not understand, the cold steel that underpinned its cyclical life of experimentation.
