The Sanctuary had a peaceful air to it, despite the chaos of flapping wings and cawing birds, that Onyx felt decidedly uncomfortable in. He reached up and touched the brown contact in his good eye, sweeping black-dyed hair behind one ear as he approached the front desk.

“Jett Black, here for the gym challenge,” he said to the attendant, handing over his fake ID with a small smile. Something had changed in him between his last challenge and this one-- he was much more relaxed, able to slip into his good Hoenn boy Jett Black guise easier than he’d been when he challenged .

The attendant handed him his ID back and waved him through. Down a short corridor and out into a room with no ceiling, just the bright blue Hoennian sky and the sun beaming down around them. A flick of his wrist and his Pokemon appeared, one on either side of him; he’d decided to go with the theme of the hour, Flying, and chosen his Aerodactyl and, of course, his ride or die, Ziadem.

The raven quorked curiously and stalked off to investigate something nearby; Petra yawned and stretched her wings while they waited for the gym leader.

Today was a good day to be outside—having overheard via the earpiece he had on that the next challenger had arrived and been shown through (thanks, Claire) to the open-air arena.

He’d just finished feeding the rowdy peanut gallery Toucannon Armada™ and had dropped off the bucket along with the gloves inside it as he made his way over to where the next challenger was waiting.

“Are you by any chance related to the former councilman ?” was his first question. “Same surname and all that.”

(Who knew just how many kids that man had?!)

Anyway.

“Down for doubles, right?” he confirmed, once he’d gotten a view of what he was going up against—an Aerodactyl and what he guessed was a Corviknight.

(For yes, he did not have a Corviknight yet, only a Corvisquire.)

The sun beaming down illuminated small motes of dust that filtered through the air.

Onyx’s lip almost lifted in a snarl, but he turned his head to his elbow and coughed to cover it. He’s supposed to not be himself, he remembered at the last second.

“No,” he said, though he offered no further explanation. “Doubles are good, if that’s what you normally do.” He whistled sharply and Ziadem returned from where she had been examining something shiny, high-stepping her little birdy feet across the arena floor.

He wanted to get going but he couldn’t obviously attack an unarmed Gym Leader.

Before anything else, the Corviknight and the Aerodactyl assumed the position—and it was time to roll.

Unsurprisingly, his Salamence came swooping down from…somewhere…and bellowed, ready to have a crack at this upcoming battle.

“Well, then, you’re getting him, and—” he trailed off, before a burst of red light coming from his pocket announced…

“Alright, already, Hera!” he exclaimed as the Gyarados appeared as well, and bellowed her challenge to the humid air.

“Challenger gets the first move!”

A Salamence and a Gyarados. An awful lot of dragon for a Flying-type Gym.

Oh, well. Onyx wasn’t too worried. He had ways to deal with dragons.

“Petra, thunder fang. Zia, steel wing.”

Jumping straight into it right off the bat. Petra shot forward towards the Gyarados, mouth crackling with electric power; Ziadem’s wings began to glow silver as she shot straight up and then carved through the air at the Salamence.

And it was on!

Unafraid of anything, both the Salamence and Gyarados roared, their respective Intimidate abilities kicking in and targeting each of their opponents on the field.

With a sharp whistle, the Salamence reared upward, never mind if the Steel Wing attack nicked him; it provided him the angle to retaliate with a full-force Flamethrower attack to the Corviknight’s face!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the field—never mind if Hera was a sucker for punishment as she took the Thunder Fang attack head-on, because it also provided her an opening to retaliate with a close-range Ice Beam against the Aerodactyl!

(She’d had her own fair share of fighting with and against his Aerodactyl, Terra, therefore she had a reasonable gauge of how to attack and defend. Never mind if they both had to leap into the air to do proper battle.)


Salamence & Gyarados are out on the field!

Intimidate from both Pokémon activate! Salamence is nicked by one side of the Steel wing and retaliates with a full-force Flamethrower on Corviknight; while Gyarados also takes the attack in stride and releases a close-range Ice Beam attack on Aerodactyl!

Ziadem’s target, the Salamence, shot upwards through the air, her iron-sharp wings just barely scraping the dragon’s scales. She flared them out and flapped hard, reversing her momentum to carve around the Salamence in a wide spiral, looping up and up. Because of this, she was safely clear of the screaming flames bursting from its mouth.

At the top of her looping rise, she spread her wings, looking for all the world like an eagle on some heraldic shield, firing off a flash cannon at the dragon’s back.

Petra’s sharp teeth and crackling jaws sink into the Gyarados’ muscular body, unleashing the full brunt of the zapping thunder fang into the beast. The Gyarados was longer and had more reach, curling its body around to fire off an ice beam at close range. It struck Petra’s hard head, screaming down her body and leaving her spine coated in burning frost. She roared in pain and rage, couching her head and charging at the Gyarados’ mouth with iron head.

- corviknight dodges flamethrower and uses flash cannon on Salamence. Aerodactyl is hit by ice beam and uses iron head.

Right off the bat, he could tell that this was going to get rather messy, all things considered. While he knew that Gabriel could hold his temper, Hera on the other hand was a literal loose cannon, in more ways than one.

And boy, did that Thunder Fang hurt!

While the Aerodactyl had maneuvered out of range before attempting to close the distance, she was not going to take that for an answer!

Despite getting knocked upside the jaw, she would then snap her head back down, and try to catch the Aerodactyl with a close-range Hydro Pump; at least the ice had taken hold on the Aerodactyl, which was good.

Over where the Salamence and the Corviknight were now battling, the draconid squinted at the Galarian avian, before this unamused look crossed his features for a few moments.

After that, a sudden avalanche of boulders in the form of a Rock Slide came crashing from out of nowhere; mostly meant to take the brunt of the incoming Flash Cannon; while he flew alongside the boulders; hoping to trap the other within the deluge of stone.


Salamence & Gyarados are out on the field!

Gyarados gets beaned by the Iron Head; before retaliating with Hydro Pump while Salamence used Rock Slide to evade the Flash Cannon attack!
