paper lanterns are alight and swaying in the breeze as the lavaridge night market slowly comes to life, stalls and vendors hawking their wares to clusters of starry-eyed tourists. [break][break]

it should be routine, but fishel is scowling as he glares at a batch of signature charcoal cookies. his swablu attempts to nestle on his shoulder but slips off, finding footing uneasy on the silk of his kimono. fishel waves the pokemon away irritably until it takes to the sky. [break][break]

it would be perfect if not one, not even two, but three of the towns apothecaries hadn't just advised him that they were missing energy roots. [break][break]

fishel had smiled tightly and promised he'd take care of it promptly, but the truth is he categorically refuses to dig around in the dirt for anyone, so realistically the only option is to find someone that will. [break][break]

he gravitates towards the pokemon center, hoping he can catch a naive trainer to assist him in a task of vital importance when he catches sight of someone wearing the iconic blood orange hoenn ranger jacket. [break][break]

fishel makes a conscious effort to soften his tone to hide the fact that it is only just short of a frantic demand. [break][break]

"ranger," he says with a smile that is practiced to be warm. "can i ask to borrow you for a moment, please?"

If it wasn't for the heat, Inari wouldn't mind Lavaridge town. It was a quiet, scenic sort of place, composed mostly of older folks and the mountain itself reminded him of home. Most of his time here is spent near Mt. Chimney, usually ushering dangerous pokemon off the path or helping foolish hikers down. Not so different from Snowpoint.

Inari has spent most of the day running around and by now, he's tired and worn out. The heat sticks to him like a second skin and all he wants is to take a cold bath and not move for the rest of the night. One more errand and he can stop. That's what he tells himself, but Inari knows something will come up to stop him because something always comes up.

He moves through a crowd of people and towards the Pokemon center, glancing at the various wares mrechants sell. Once or twice, he finds himself stopping to buy a bundle of herbs or admire someone's craftmanship. It delays him, makes it more likely someone is going to pull him aside.

Inari is so close to the doors of the Pokecenter that he lets himself think, for just one second, maybe he'll be able to heal his Pokemon and then go home without incident. It's a naive thought, one that crashes around him just as soon as it occurs. The name ranger has never been so bittersweet.

Inari turns to face the man with raised eyebrows and a dulled expression. "What do you need?" It comes out more of a demand than a question and he regrets it just as soon as he says it.

He acts like he can't hear the lack of enthusiasm or see the way the man's face almost drops when he addresses him, but at least he has the decency to sound reasonably polite. [break][break]

Fishel arches an eyebrow and takes a long moment to openly look the ranger up, down, and up again. His swablu capitalises on the moment of stillness and gently floats down, landing on his shoulder and folding her downy wings daintily, head cocked side-ways to mirror its trainer. [break][break]

"If it's not too much of a inconvenience," he starts, tone almost saccharine even as his eyes narrow. "I'm afraid you're one of the few people qualified to help. I'm coming to with a small request on behalf of the matsuri organisers." [break][break]

Fishel's mouth certainly smiles, but his eyes are a flat obsidian. He pauses, letting the words hang between them, as if Lavaridge's almost monthly festival and night market is important enough to bring the man into awe. [break][break]

"I'd like you to help me gather a few things from the... the foothills, I suppose? I'm not really sure where these things grow. I expect you'll be compensated for your time by the League." [break][break]

He turns his body side-ways and the tiny Zorua standing in his shadow peeks out behind to him, one of the last energy roots clutched in its fangs. Fishel gives the ghost of a nod and the Pokemon trots over the ranger and drops the root at his feet before turning and bounding back to its trainer, jumping up into his arms with a running leap. [break][break]

Fishel doesn't know where to find the root, but he knows it smells bad and needs gloves to be handled hence why he had the zorua carry it for him. Regardless, he makes no mention of that to the ranger, forgoing warnings for another radiant smile.

Inari feels as if he is being picked apart, exposed in a way that makes him shift in place. His gaze shifts one way then another, trying to find someplace to settle on in an effort to pretend this isn't happening. When the man speaks, Inari has never been so relieved to hear a stranger's voice.

He lets their eyes meet again to show he's listening and only moves them when the trainer shifts as well, following to where he's looking. A small pokemon slips from the shadows, something caught within its teeth. Inari crouches down to examine it.

"They grow in the ground," he answers, as if that wasn't obvious enough. Inari shrugs his jacket off and uses it to pick the root up. They would use these at home to brew into a tea for colds or to feed to injured pokemon. He stands and carefully slips the root into his bag before pulling his jacket back on.

"Let's go."

Inari spares the man a brief glance before he takes the lead, black hair swaying against his back.
