"Oh boy, back here again." He said as he slung his pickaxe atop his shoulder, tipping back his hardhat with a wry grin on his lips.

Flanking either side of him were his Escavalier and Crustle, by now experienced miners in their own right, having endured the madness of the skelleton's innards together for just long enough to become fireforged besties.

"Let me handle the radiation." He said to Freya as he turned around, walking backwards into the mine with a wink. "I've been kinda getting used to it by now! Perks of being an avatar and what not!"

micolash follows freya more readily now. it still struggles with some of her nonverbal commands, and especially struggles with her usage of the grunts and snarls of her broken draconic. there is a spark in it, yes, but she's long since learned that the creature's typing is strictly poison. its draconic spirit won't awaken until it's evolved.

she hefts her own tools and smiles thankfully at her companion.

"i'll admit, it'll be a nice break." she stands back as he takes the brunt and once the worst of the thickened energy has faded away, she starts their excavation.

"do you still feel pain the same way?" she asks curiously. "apologies if that's a weird thing to ask."

"Not at all! It's a reasonable question to ask!" He said cheerily as he slung his pickaxe over his nape, sliding both of his arms over the shaft as he balanced himself on the balls of his feet. "The correct answer would be no, but actually yes."

As he prepared to launch into an explanation, his mining buddies moved to claim one of the ore veins, slamming drills and pickaxes into them. Good little hardoworkers!

"Lele's gifts did not grant me any supernatural pain tolerance— but they did make me very... careless in my youth." Code for 'Prior to 20 years in Galar'. "Let's just say I've been exposed to levels of pain most human beings don't tend to... survive."

He paused, before shrugging and grinning her way.

"Are you acquainted with the concept of 'pain habituation'?"

it makes sense to her. she nods, though her expression isn't as grim as the notions they're discussing. his own cheeriness is due in part. what does surprise her is his allusion to their years in galar and all at once she realizes she may have found someone who remembers just as much as she does.

"you work with dragons long enough and you develop your own special kind," she says, but then adds, "but that sounds awful. i'm sorry."

their pickaxes pling, pling, pling against the rock as they dig out the mine. above them, the skeleton thrums. reinforcements emerge like white blood cells to a virus. amalgamations of different pokemon drift towards their small group and micolash meets them with a fervor of bloodlust.

freya starts organizing their packs. it won't be long until they're forced to leave.

"do you remember much of galar, doug?" she asks softly.

being an avatar certainly didn't make the likes of FERNANDO SILPH more humble. nor MATIAS SILPH. though that's probably not a fair assessment of doug's words. silphs are their own breed of egomaniac.

surprise colors her face and she nearly drops the pickaxe she's holding. so many others she's talked to haven't been able to recall a thing - and what they do are flashes, glimpses, the words between the lines. inextricable feelings behind mesh webbing.

her surprise gives way to a shocking joy. gratitude that someone remembers.

"i was hardly a queen," she says with a laugh. "i only wanted to go home." is that what makes a difference?

watercolor bleeds on the edge of her vision and she swears. micolash retreats to the entrance and raises its stinger, prepared to ward off the oncoming wave of abominations. freya presses her thumb and pointer to the bridge of her nose and staves off the headache budding behind her temples.

"they've found us. mico can hold off the first wave, but we'll need to start packing up."
