Jack paced back and forth outside of the large gym building, trying to shake off his nervous. He had thought himself battle hardened after his time surviving in Galar but his battles against Team Rocket on the strange, new island on Route 105 had proved him wrong. He had held his own to some degree, but he knew he was lucky to be alive after some of those encounters. It had become clear to Jack that he needed the formal training and discipline of the gym challenge, so he had scheduled himself in Rustboro.[break][break]

After giving a mighty shrug, Jack walked purposefully through the door to the receptionist and placed two pokeballs on the counter. "I'd like to register my pokemon for the gym challenge today, please," he said with a polite smile that hid some of the nervousness he still felt.

Jack nodded his head to the gym leader and smiled as he approached. "Yeah, this is my first go at the gym challenge. I've read the League rules and all that but it's new to me, so hopefully I didn't mess my registration up too badly."

A wide grin spread across Jack's face as he was swept along behind Cian into the battling chamber. His pulse quickened with excitement as nervousness as he turned to the gym leader.[break][break]

"Is there anything I need to know before be start or shall we get right to it?" Jack asked as he released his Toxtricity and Mismagius from their pokeballs in a burst of red light.

[attr="class","cianmain"]the battling chamber is nondescript for the most part—the battlefield divided into two distinct sections, one for the challenger, and one for the leader. its terrain is rocky, akin to being in the desert.

what's most prominent is the crowd that surrounds them. it seems jack's challenge has gathered up some attention.

"we'll just jump right into it! i'm sure you'll do fine."

his larvitar and drilbur poke their heads out of the sand before climbing out.

"ready whenever you are!"

a SANDSTORM begins to brew.

As Cian's pokemon appeared the mood of the crowd seemed to change in anticipation of the battle. Jack surreptitiously wiped his sweaty palms on his pants as he nodded to the gym leader. Glancing between the two opposing pokemon, Jack started to formulate a strategy as the sand began to kick up in the wind.[break][break]

"Toxtricity, go for the Drillbur. Mismagius, hit that Larvitar hard and fast," Jack commanded his pokemon in a steady voice, though he stuck a quivering hand in his pocket as the noise of the crowd changed.[break][break]

His Toxtricity leapt forward with it's mouth wide, firing a toxic secretion in an oily stream at the Drillbur. At the same time, Mismagius swooped through the air accompanied by eerie chanting as several magical leaves trailed behind her. She gestured toward the Larvitar and the leaves rushed forward on unseen wind to harry the Rock Skin Pokemon.

[attr="class","cianmain"]DIG won't save drilbur from the TOXIC that puts them on a timer; an unfortunate circumstance that they will simply have to fight around; but it does take it underground where it will temporarily reside for now.

left on its own, larvitar contends with the MAGICAL LEAVES and dodges what it can with the help of its SAND VEIL. it lets loose a piercing SCREECH against the toxtricity, setting up what's to come.

the ground beneath the poison-type breaks as drilbur comes bursting out. it slashes at the toxtricity with DIG.

The whirling sandstorm tore into Mismagius and Toxtricity and Jack felt the gritty particles in his mouth each time he swallowed. His Toxtricity is disarmed by the screech, vulnerable within the blowing sand as the drillbur slams into him from below. He avoids fainting through it is clear that the pokemon isn't able to withstand much more.[break][break]

Seeking to put an end to the storm and it's biting dust, Mismagius chants an incantation that causes an artificial sun to flare to life above the arena, creating a sunny day for the pokemon.[break][break]

Seeking to release his frustration at the early bombardment, Toxtricity unleashes a boomburst. Amplified by the pokemon's punk rock, sound waves pulse outward in riotous bursts that stir the dust on the ground as they slam into the other three pokemon.

SUNNY DAY overrides the SANDSTORM but it does little to replace the humidity and the heat that comes from such an intense battle. still, it tips the scales in the favor of the challenger.[break][break]

PUNK ROCKED BOOMBURST finds the drilbur, and the residual damage from TOXIC is what takes it out. it is recalled, leaving the larvitar on its own.[break][break]

unable to rely on its SAND VEIL, larivtar decides to just make the EARTHQUAKE.

Perspiring heavily, Jack felt a surge of triumph when the Drilbur was recalled. His elation was short lived as the Larvitar's earthquake brought down his already weakened Toxtricity. Jack recalled his fainted pokemon is a flash of light and tucked the pokeball back on his belt.[break][break]

Mismagius cackled as it levitated over the field, the rippling of the earth passing harmlessly beneath it thought it could not evade the booming soundwaves from it's partner Toxtricity.[break][break]

"Don't get cocky, Mismagius, but put the pressure on!" Jack shouted to his pokemon.[break][break]

The Magical Pokemon turned to her opponent, chanting ominously again as she summoned another magical leaf barrage. Manifesting around her, the razor sharp leaves lanced forward, tracking toward the Larvitar.

STONE EDGES erupt out of the ground, forming pillars for the larvitar to hide behind from the MAGICAL LEAVES that attempt to cut it down. it knows, deep down, that it's only delaying the inevitable, but it has to try.[break][break]

He nodded in appreciation for the Larvitar's clever use of stone edge to block attacks as the sharp leaves slashed into the solid rock that appeared. He made a mental note of the strategy as jagged rocks erupted below his Mismagius.[break][break]

The pokemon's levitate gave it enough time to attempt to dodge, preventing the spike of rock from spearing it completely but wasn't enough to fully dodge as the stone's edge cut into her. The Mismagius' cry of pain was piercing but as she looked at Jack, he knew she knew what to do.[break][break]

He simply nodded.[break][break]

Mismagius began her eerie chanting again, summoning the deadly magical leaf storm and sending it lashing out at the Larvitar once more.

the final storm of MAGICAL LEAF is enough to drown the larvitar. it succumbs to the pain, and once the attack subsides, it reveals the ground-type fainted on the ground, knocked out.[break][break]

"damn..."[break][break]

despite losing, cian could not look happier as he recalls his larvitar before skipping over to the challenger, presenting them with THE WEATHER BADGE.[break][break]

"you've earned this! your pokemon put up a tough battle, showing great teamwork and skill, so well done, jack!"

Jack grinned widely as Mismagius, feeling a surge of pride that she had pulled off the win against a difficult opponent. Jack accepted the Weather Badge proudly from Cian, his flushed face from the excitement of the battle hiding the blush as the crowd in the gym roared.[break][break]

"Thank you for the tough battle. I learned a lot from you and your pokemon," Jack said gratefully to the gym leader before he turned and headed for exit. Feeling like his heart was in his throat, he gave the crowd a jaunty wave and with a casual salute to Cian before he disappeared from the arena.[break][break]
