Jack was already standing, words of bitter reassurance for DESIREE BLOOMS on his lips when he was telekinetically yanked toward their warden. Relief washed over him that he was not alone with Munkidori, mixed with guilt that other prisoners would suffer whatever cruelty was planned. He glanced through his mask at one of the younger prisoners he didn't know and howard slayte. Bile burned in the back of his throat as Munkidori spoke.[break][break]

Suspicion filled him as he watched the slowly shuffling boxes with a wary eye. Exchanging a grim nod to Howard, Jack's hand trembled as he raised it to where the tera shard was obviously hidden, but it jerked toward another box as poison burned in his veins. In disbelief, he tried again to point at the correct box but, like before, his hand swung away to point at another. His two comrades were having the same issue. Mild annoyance creased Jack's brow until the laughing started.[break][break]

Heat rushed to his face in embarrassment as Munkidori chanted. That embarrassment quickly turned to shame as the mocking continued, familiar voices recognizable in the laughter. Some of those voices were people who were supposed to be his friends.[break][break]

He was stupid, wasn't he? Stupid for trusting Zev Harcourt's friendship, stupid for putting faith in Aurelie Lefevre as a partner, stupid for thinking his parents were ever going to come home, stupid for going back to Galar thinking he could make a difference. It was all so stupid. He was so stupid.[break][break]

Howard's words gouged into him, the man's pain and suffering evident even before his screaming began. Jack wanted to scream too, but Pamplemousse had quietly stepped to the forefront. Where Jack would have extended a comforting hand to his fellow prisoners, Pamplemousse only gazed impassively from behind the mask, mentally taking notes about Munkidori up close so he could report to Diamandis later. Jack wept inside the cell that had been constructed within his mind but Pamplemousse simply watched and waited, silent and unmoved by the spectacle taking place around him.[break][break]

Extraction #2: Beau & Jack

An amused grin tugged at the corner of his mouth as Beau leapt into the Power Spot, threatening to break his normally focused demeanor. Jack was thankful that he had been partnered with Beau again, even if it made it hard for him to be his usual professional Elite Ranger self. After their last mining assignment in the Ultra Deep Sea, it had taken him a few days to shake of lingering feelings of fear and paranoia. Worse, it had taken him weeks to shake the shame he had for suspecting that Beau would ever do something to hurt him.[break][break]

He was relieved that this assignment was on Route 105 rather than in Ultra Space and hopeful that he could make amends for how poorly their last extraction had gone.[break][break]

Releasing Mismagius from her pokeball, Jack stepped into the Power Spot. His pokemon's mystical chanting helping them both levitate gracefully downward into whatever was waiting below.[break][break]

Aurelie's revelation squeezed down on his chest until he felt like he was suffocating. He tried to justify her betrayal but it was clear she was too ashamed to even admit it aloud even asleep. The sound of static filled his head as he recalled DESIREE BLOOMS' plea to their ward to not forsake the others, his own voice voting to trust.[break][break]

"I'm a Dummy," he answered her flatly, the smell of his own vomit mixed with mochi filling his dreaming nostrils as the memory of being beaten by the strange creature flooded his mind. The dream around him popped like a doomed soap bubble.[break][break]

His eyes fluttered open, returning him to the dismal cell.[break][break]

Pamplemousse remained still as Diamandis moved closer to him, ignoring the ache in his back from where he had fallen asleep sitting against the wall of the cell. He tilted his head to the side to listen. With Jack the gesture may have been quizzical but for Pamplemousse it was simply focused. He pondered her words, unperturbed by the prophetic phrasing.[break][break]

In a quiet tone, he conveyed what he had seen in the dream with Aurelie: their pokemon in stasis, megalopolans and other trainers, familiar faces spotted in the crowd. Jack fancied that he had even gotten a fleeting glimpse of Zev Harcourt, but unsubstantiated glances were easy for Pamplemousse to ignore. Pamplemousse was dedicated to his duty to watch and wait for the time to strike; he would not be distracted by the detritus of someone else's life.[break][break]

The smell of vomit and mochi filled Jack's mind again at Diamandis' mention of the red-haired woman, Aurelie Lefevre. Instead, Pamplemousse turned to look at Diamandis and asked in an even, businesslike tone, "Do they exist upon the ugly or does the ugly exist within them?" He turned away from her before asking, "Why are we here, Diamandis?"[break][break]

Pamplemousse wasn't sure what he meant and Jack was too distraught to care.

"Oh, good idea! We could put together a list of local adventures," Jack grinned at the idea of lining up a series of dates in Lilycove and Verdanturf.[break][break]

He heaved a dramatic sigh at the sight of the long lines as his stomach grumbled in agreement. As they waited in line for noodles, Jack snuck surreptitious glances at those ahead of them, his mouth watering at the sight of their containers. It looked and smelled delicious. When they finally received their orders, it took all of his willpower not to begin eating then and there.[break][break]

He watched Aurelie in amusement as she set up her phone to take a photo of the food. While Jack did some food photography, it wasn't a big part of his social media presence. When Aurelie nearly lost her curry and her phone, Jack lunged forward though she recovered it on her own. Glimpsing the photo over her shoulder, merriment sparkled in his eyes as he said, "Not a very appetizing photo."[break][break]

"Let's take photos at the top," he suggested as he gently took the container from her and stacked it atop his own. It was safer that way, he thought to himself as he offered her a wide grin. Tilting his head toward the hill, he added, "Maybe we can do one of those noodle slurping kisses in the sunset?"

Despite his reassurances to DESIREE BLOOMS, he hadn't actually been sure any of this was real until he felt Aurelie's strong blacksmithing hands in his. "Lucid dreaming," he repeated the words of the mad prophet Diamandis before pulling Aurelie close to him in a crushing hug. Even after letting go, he reached out gingerly to stroke his thumb across her cheek as he drank in the vision of her naked body. Lucid dream, fever dream, some kind of dream.[break][break]

Almost instinctively he was out of his shirt, pulling it over his head in one smooth motion to reveal his toned abs. He gently tugged it down over her head before planting a gentle kiss on her mouth. The pain of the day seemed to fade as he looked into her eyes.[break][break]

We've got to look for things before it ends. The silent reminder echoed in his brain, his mission an unwelcome distraction from the enticing allure of Aurelie's body and the soothing balm of her presence.[break][break]

"I think we are both dreaming the same dream," he responded to her questions, unable to take his eyes off of her. "I fell asleep on the floor and then I was here and so was Diamandis, and then I saw you..." his rambling trailed off as realization began to creep in.[break][break]

"Please tell me that they didn't get you too?" His tone was half question, half plea as he worried that he dreamt of Aurelie because she too was imprisoned.[break][break]

We've got to look for things before it ends. Jack was didn't want to look away from the one point of stability in this strange place, but Pamplemousse was as dedicated to the mission as ever. His eyes flickered over Aurelie's shoulder to the broad window of a storefront. Behind the glass, he glimpsed a pokemon suspended in an unknown liquid, including the unmistakable red and black Aegislash that could only be Harpe.[break][break]

We've got to look for things before it ends. Pamplemousse tugged Aurelie gently over to the glass, his critical gaze taking in the details of the holding tanks, an analytical voice inside his mind adding a notation that Aurelie's Leafeon, Fleur, was suspended in one of the tanks.[break][break]

"Oh no, you really are here, aren't you?" Jack's voice felt small and distant in the humming glow of the dreaming city.

Jack retreated into himself as the pain became too much. Not just the beating, but the feeling of betrayal from the ugly ward that the cold water could not sluice away. It was easy to be subsumed in the persona of Pamplemousse, to put the personal aside and focus on the mission. Stoically, Pamplemousse took in as much detail as he could from their surroundings, watching and waiting as ever.[break][break]

Relief washed over both Jack and Pamplemousse as they were reunited with Diamandis. Pamplemousse gave her a reassuring nod but it was clear his cellmate's mind was elsewhere. He couldn't blame her. In the dark recesses of his mind, Jack agreed. Instead of talking, Pamplemousse settled against the wall near the cell bars, keeping watch until he finally drifted off to sleep.[break][break]

Even the comfort of darkened sleep was denied them as Pamplemousse blinked fuzzily at Ultra Megalopolis surrounding them in brilliant scale. Mentally battered and bruised, Jack knew this was no ordinary dream, more akin to the strange dreams he had experienced back in October, or his misadventures in the Kingdom of Sylvis. At the sound of Diamandis' voice, he turned to find her at a window display.[break][break]

"Lucid dreaming, eh?" Pamplemousse responded, his voice even and unsurprised. Searching for answers in Diamandis' face, he agreed, "No need to ask, we both seem real enough."[break][break]

Whatever insight his cellmate could have provided was lost as she spotted something in the distance. Pamplemousse hesistated as she sprinted away, thinking of calling after her when a flash of red hair caught his eye.[break][break]

Jack was pounding down the street without a thought, her name falling from his lips in whispered prayer: "Aurelie?"[break][break]

We've got to look for things before it ends.

Trust. Relief washed over him that so many others had chosen to trust in their fellow humans. Whatever messed up game was being played, it was a small comfort to Jack that they would face it together.[break][break]

Pamplemousse's head swiveled as they were herded onto the platform, taking in as much detail as he could. His stomach lurched as the platform began to move, the poison in his gut churning as a disorienting wave of nausea washed over him. He fought it off with effort, his counting of the prisoners from the other ward faltering as the prison flashed by the moving platform. He turned to whisper an observation to Diamandis before realizing that she was no longer beside him.[break][break]

Panic prickled at his consciousness, the strange feeling of being alone in the press of people laced with concern over her well-being. He shifted and turned as much as he could without drawing attention to himself, seeking his cellmate in the mass of masked and identically dressed people. His efforts were interrupted by the rough paws of Okidogi as he was shoved from the platform. Reflexively, he rolled as he hit the soft landing and let the momentum carry him back to his feet.[break][break]

Betrayal. His stomach lurched at the announcement that another ward had chosen to punish them. The elation he had at the vote to trust vanished like a popped balloon as his toxic chain bound him to the floor. He was nowhere near Diamandis, how could he protect her?[break][break]

He couldn't even protect himself. As the raging beast approached in the darkness, Pamplemousse tried to anticipate its movements but as the toxic chain held him like a leashed dog he was powerless to avoid the thing. Wild blows hit him in his abdomen, sending him to the mochi-coated floor. The sickness in his gut finally overwhelmed him as his vomit, hot and acrid, splashed against the inside of his mask. Crying silently in the darkness, he knew it was just more mess to clean up.[break][break]

Jack wanted to look away as one of the other prisoners was smashed against the ground like a rag doll in a child's tantrum. Like a worm boring into an apple, the suspicion that the battered man might be Isaac Merlo ate into his heart. Torn between rushing to his friend's aid and avoiding notice, it only took one look at Diamandis for Pamplemousse to win out. The movements of her body, her whispered words. Someone she recognized was here too and she was hurting.[break][break]

As the screen flickered on to show the strange technological room, Pamplemousse turned his attention there. He focused on the details, holding them tight in his mind even as his stomach churned and he yearned to look away from the murders of innocent pokemon. He could feel the hatred burning hotter with each successive pokeball, but the shock of the gigaton ball and the image of the Bloodmoon Ursaluna they had found those months in the swamp shocked him completely. Others from that expedition were here. Their pokemon were here.[break][break]

"Strength, Diamandis. We have more friends to save now," Pamplemousse whispered to his cellmate. He shifted slightly toward her, brushing his arm against hers unobtrusively, hoping the gesture would provide reassurance as he whispered an updated count of the guards, "Ten now."[break][break]

Pamplemousse listened impassively at the speeches others gave, sifting through the exhortations and pleadings of the other prisoners. His mind rushed back to the simulated battle atop that tower, to the conversation Jack and Beau Fontaine had about Truth and Ideals. Perhaps to forsake the other ward was true and logical, but it was so far from his ideals that Jack grew sick thinking of it. He nodded as Diamandis excoriated those who would forsake the others for their own benefit.[break][break]

Jack had thought that she spoke the ravings of a mad woman, but Pamplemousse was coming to believe that it was the madness of a prophet - one of those women who inhaled volcanic steam to see the secrets of the universe. When an opening came to speak, he pitched his voice low.[break][break]

"I cast my vote to --" Pamplemousse started in a rough, scratchy tone to disguise his voice. As he spoke, the cruel Munkidori jabbed a finger into his ribs, his final word coming out in a loud exhale that was clearly Jack, "-- Trust."
