RILEY MADDOX

Riley is a scrappy, jaded young man from Orre, seeking a better life for himself in Hoenn, as absurd as that sounds. Raised in an unloving household, Riley was forced to fend for himself on the streets of the Under. Having run in some unsavoury circles in the past, Riley has an overall distrust for authority, preferring to play by his own rules. Still, Riley has a keen sense of justice, and recently made a clean break from his past life, unable to abide by the increasingly violent means of his old crew.

TROPES & INSPIRATIONS

Riley can be described as a Byronic Hero thanks to his cynicical and rebellious outlook. Despite this, he actually falls closer to a Knight in Sour Armor, as while he is a relentless Deadpan Snarker, his innate sense of justice drives him to protect others at all costs. He is very much inspired by private investigators such as Jessica Jones and Veronica Mars—while he almost always has a sarcastic quip to drop, he is relentlessly curious and fiercely independent, and will always step in to help a person in need.

AN EYE FOR TROUBLE
Though Riley is in school to become a photographer, he has a knack for sniffing out and getting himself into trouble. Though he is not particularly interested in law enforcement, he has a vested interest in defending the weak and the innocent, and rooting out corruption where he can find it, accompanied by his trusty pokémon and trusty camera. Will this lead him to finding a greater calling... or will he get himself too deep into trouble?

Despite Riley's tough, no-nonsense exterior, he is a bit of a lonely young man. Having severed all ties to his old home and moved far away, Riley is in a new land searching for a place to belong. More importantly, if he hopes to grow as a person, he will need to learn how to let himself be vulnerable and allow others in. Will he open up and form solid bonds, or shut down and become a bitter, jaded individual, just like his father before him?

• In his youth, Riley ran with a gang back in Pyrite Town/The Under. A few years prior, he cut ties with the gang, not liking the violent direction it was headed in. There is always the possibility of one of his old gang members resurfacing.
• Riley grew up with a physically and verbally abusive father. Though he was most often in conflict with his father, there is room for an interesting sibling dynamic there. Alternatively, room for cousins on either his mom or dad's side!
