Sierra carefully adjusted the last balloon, making sure it hovered just right next to the "Happy Birthday, Goomy!" banner. The local bar, usually dimly lit and filled with chatter, now radiated with the festive glow of party lights. Goomy, Sierra's beloved Pokémon, wriggled happily on the table, wearing a tiny party hat that threatened to slip off with every joyful bounce.[break][break]
"Alright, Gooms, everything's set up! I hope Riley likes balloons as much as you do," Sierra chuckled, looking around the room. The bar's usual patrons eyed the decorations curiously, but Sierra couldn't help feeling a bit self-conscious. Who throws a birthday party for their Pokémon at a bar? She shook off the doubt, reminding herself that Goomy deserved the best.[break][break]
Goomy blew into the noise maker, creating a high-pitched squeak that echoed in the otherwise quiet bar. Sierra laughed, her worry dissipating as she watched her Pokémon's excitement.[break][break]
"Just a little longer, Gooms, and Riley will be here. You're going to have the best birthday ever!"

Moss just happened to be passing by.

[break][break]As he passed by a bar in the Lower District, he noticed out of the corner of his eye something familiar. Weezer watched him curiously as Moss backpedaled, and pressed his face up against the glass of the bar's window. It was Sierra! The news lady! And it looked like she was... throwing a birthday party? Moss' face immediately lit up. "Look, Weezer," he laughed, "I wonder if they've got cake!" He scooped the Buizel under his arm like a book or a briefcase and pushed through the doors of the bar and shouted, "Happy Birthday, Goomy-!!"

[break][break]The patrons of the dingy bar probably weren't too thrilled about such a loud entrance, but Moss was none the wiser. "Oh, man," he grinned, heading to the table, "I didn't know it was your birthday, Goomy! How're you feelin' on your big day?" He set Weezer on the table and set about putting a party hat on him. Weezer hopped excitedly. He continued to talk to the Goomy as he put one on his own head, resting atop the straw hat. It was a bit of a stretch. "I don't think we met before. I'm Moss. And this here is Weezer."

[break][break]Moss sat at the table and helped himself to a little cheese, crackers, and fruit. "Hi, Sierra," he said. "You mention Riley is comin'? It's like a li'l reunion, ain't it?" Meanwhile, Weezer would hesitantly wander over to Goomy and sniff around, as if trying to gauge Goomy's disposition through smell alone.

Friends. Riley... didn't have many friends.
[break][break]Sure, he'd met plenty of acquaintances in Hoenn. Classmates, coworkers, et cetera. There were even a few people he'd consider himself... friendly with. But he'd burned most of his bridges back in Orre, and he hadn't really settled properly in Hoenn yet. He didn't mind that, necessarily. He liked being alone, and if he needed the company, he always had his pokémon.
[break][break]But that didn't mean being friendless was fun to admit out loud.
[break][break]So when Sierra, his casual work acquaintance, had invited him to a small party for one of pokémon, he'd... accepted? It had been a spur of the moment decision, but it had felt right. It could even be fun, he thought! A little party for a pokémon. What was the tradition gift for a pokémon, anyway?
[break][break]Which was how Riley found himself walking into a bar in Slateport, carrying a small package under his arm. He wasn't sure if Sierra wanted a... dress code for this event, so he just dressed in his standard clothes: his jeans, his tank, and his signature brown jacket. His hair had been pulled back out of his eyes, so at the very least, if he met any reporter people at this party, he wouldn't look like a homeless person.
[break][break]Speaking of which, Riley was mildly surprised to see Moss, of all people, standing in the bar alongside Sierra. Had she invited him? He hadn't thought they were close like that. Actually... taking a look around, it looked like they were the only ones here. Had they gotten the time wrong? "Uh. Hey, Sierra," he nodded to her. "Moss," he added, with a nod to the boy. "Am I, um... early?"

Moss greeted Goomy with boisterous enthusiasm, wishing her a happy birthday and inquiring about her special day. In response, Goomy let out a joyous shrill cry and gleefully tooted her noise maker repeatedly, clearly reveling in the festivities. She was undeniably in high spirits![break][break]
Sierra's eyes widened as Moss made his lively entrance into the bar. "Moss! And Weezer! What a surprise!" She chuckled, observing the cautious sniff exchange between Weezer and Goomy. Goomy, in particular, seemed to jiggle with excitement as she playfully blew the noise maker at Weezer in greeting.[break][break]
Though Sierra hadn't precisely invited Moss—unsure of how to contact him or whether another encounter with Pangoro had taken an unfortunate turn—she was pleased to have both him and Weezer join their impromptu gathering.[break][break]
"You're right on time! Goomy's just getting started with the festivities," Sierra gestured to the table adorned with snacks and decorations. "It feels like a mini-reunion, doesn't it? Almost like yesterday's Pangoro duel and the day before when we first met at Meteor Falls. It seems we're destined to keep bumping into each other like this."[break][break]
Goomy, spotting Riley first, wiggled in delight, her little party hat almost toppling over. Sierra turned to Riley, who had just arrived. "Hey, Riley! You're not early; Moss just beat you to the entrance. Come on, join the party!" She motioned to the spread of food and the Pokémon introductions happening on the table.[break][break]
"Yeah, it's a bit of a small gathering, but that just means more treats for Goomy," Sierra teased, offering Riley a warm smile. "And hey, it's great to see you here. Thanks for coming."[break][break]
Goomy, on the edge of the table, inched closer to Riley, presenting him with a party hat she had picked up with her mouth.[break][break]
Sierra felt a sense of gratitude that Moss and Riley were both present, elevating Goomy's birthday celebration into a genuine event. As they settled into the festivities, Sierra couldn't help but think that perhaps throwing a Pokémon birthday party in a bar was, indeed, a fantastic idea.[break][break]

With Goomy’s noise maker being tooted happily in greeting, Weezer responded in kind. His tails spun happily like a propeller and he lifted his head and squirted a little puff of water into the air. The Buizel would sit there and hang out with the Goomy for a bit unless otherwise ushered away.

[break][break]Moss himself was helping himself to whatever appetizers he could get his hands on. “I guess we are,” Moss said through a mouthful of crackers, “a funny li’l reunion, sure!” And something clicked in Moss’ head. If it was a party, shouldn’t he invite all of his friends? He started rummaging through his pockets for his pokeballs as Riley entered.

[break][break]”Oh, howdy!” He grinned, pulling out a couple of pokeballs and sorting through them. He took Bastard’s ball and gingerly returned it to his pocket. The others he held outstretched. “Alright, gang! Behave! It’s Goomy’s birthday!” There was a flash of light and Moss’ entire team (with the exception of his delinquent Pangoro) burst into existence.

[break][break]Doodles the Altaria settled its fluffy self beside Goomy and Weezer, cooing happily in its sing-song voice. Tort the Grotle stood beside Moss before shuffling away, looking for a nice corner to settle down in. Lofi the Rotom made a sound like snickering and vanished into the walls of the bar. Maybe he shouldn’t have released that one.

[break][break]”Yeah! Shots!” Moss cheered, delighting in the festivities. But he’d also never drank alcohol in his life.

Arriving at the bar for Sierra's pokémon party, Riley was fairly surprised to find Moss of all people waiting there with her... and no one else. Desperately, he suggested that maybe he'd arrived early, but Sierra was quick to shoot him down, suggesting that Moss had just beat him there. For a moment, Riley considered how valuable his friendship with Sierra actually was. Whether it was worth... whatever this was. Honestly, he hadn't really ever had a friendship that didn't carry the undercurrent of potential violence.[break][break]

He couldn't really afford to be picky with friends right now.[break][break]

Accepting the party for what it was—and also swearing to never call out Sierra for her own apparent lack of friends—Riley approached the table, just as Goomy slid up to him with a party hat in her mouth. Fortunately, Riley was saved from potential embarrassment when Moss had the clever idea to release his pokémon to join the party. Riley decided to follow suit.[break][break]

Pulling out his pokéball, Riley released Blue the Oshawott, who appeared in a bundle of light. Blue gave Goomy and Weezer a big wave, before accepting the party hat and sliding it onto his own head. Riley chuckled, reaching over to ruffle the pokémon's fur. "Have fun, bud." Truthfully, most of Riley's team weren't huge fans of play in the same way that Blue was, so it was probably good for him to spend some good times like this.[break][break]

Speaking of good times, Sierra suggested some birthday shots, which Riley decided he very much needed at that moment. To his surprise, Moss was equally as enthusiastic. It... only then occurred to Riley that he had no clue how old Moss was. "You, uh, never struck me as the alcohol type, Moss," Riley said. Then again, watching him get plastered for the first time would be pretty funny.
