Now that he had all that free time, he decided to slip away to Mauville and hit one of those 24-hour arcades…

Initially he saw that there was an Articuno plush, at an approximate 1:4 scale (or something similar, if it was 1:1 then it would be as big as the one on strike) however, fate had other plans for him that evening…

“What’re you doing here so late?” he asked as he spotted the familiar visage of renown ‘dog boy’, none other than Kyle himself.

“Won’t like, your partner look for you and all that?”

A thin smile flashed across his face.

kyle finds himself walking alone all the way to mauville from verdanturf. it's a walk to clear his mind, but old habits die hard.

the arcade becomes the place of interest when he coincidentally passes one by. the flashy lights and the childish beeps of the machines suck him in like a flame to a moth. unable to resist the temptation, he goes in, only to find someone else he recognizes inside.

both of them look surprised at each other's presence, it seemed.

"he's used to my irregular work schedules," he answers with humor. "besides, this place is more of my hangout. i should be surprised you're here."

kyle realizes he didn't answer the question.

"i'm just here for a walk. these places are more fun to visit when the kids are out."

“I have a lot more free time now, you know,” he remarked in a pointed manner that literally screamed ‘if you know, you know’ tone.

“So I can stay out much later than usual.”

At the crack of ‘irregular working schedule’, he smirked.

“But are you really here for a walk?” he continued with a teasing tone. “To be fair, you see those 1:4 plush figures over there?” as he tilted his head towards where he saw the 1:4 Articuno, accompanied by a Zapdos and a Moltres of the same size.

“Or are you here to try your luck?”

"i may have lived and grew at verdanturf, but i'm still a city boy at heart."

his entire profile screams it. that was why he never stayed as a ranger even though he passed certifications. nature just wasn't his calling when he feels more comfortable in the city.

they have arcades after all, which was like his infinity energy.

"ooh, those are interesting." he takes a peek at the prizes, and finds the birds. he guesses lars might be here for the articuno. "these are usually rigged, but i can try until i get one."

he postures himself in front of the machine, taking a better look at what he will be working with.

"have you tried yet? how much have you spent already?"

“Heh, you didn’t strike me as much of a wilderness type anyway… because yes, the Rangers still have your papers and form from when you applied back then,” he smirked before momentarily cashing in some bills for quarters and the like.

“Which one are you going after? Surely not Zapdos?” he laughed as he returned, holding a small sack of coins that jingled.

“Pretty much cashed all of this in, so… yeah.”

He then took the machine that was next to where dog boy stood. Oh, shit.

“No kidding, I don’t know anyone who’s won any of the bigger prizes from here yet. Maybe you or I will be the first,” he cackled as he began to insert coins…

"maybe that one." kyle points at moltres. "i'm visiting mt. pyre soon and maybe that's a good gift."

he's not the type to follow traditions to the heart, but it was fun in concept nonetheless.

"i think she can have something fancier than flowers, though she probably doesn't mind those either."

stormy silph. she was a friend to both of them, and a victim of the drk triad.

"now, let me do my magic."

kyle cracks his fingers before he inserts a coin for an attempt. it takes a few calculated attempts to calibrate himself with how the machine works. it normally was a waste of money, but aqua pays a lot and he has nothing else to spend it on.

he hyperfixates on the claw machine until he eventually snags one after multiple attempts. a sigh of relief marks his victory.

The moment he realized who Kyle was referring to, he sobered up.

Because once upon a time, Lars did have a soft spot for Stormy Silph , however he’d literally (and figuratively) got burned when he walked in on her hospital room to deliver flowers and instead saw her together with ALEXANDER STONE looking like they had just kissed…

Curse him for being so slow.

(Little did Kyle know that Stormy herself was a major part of why he was extremely salty when it came to reciprocating relationships and feelings…)

“Oh, man, you just had to… ooh, that was so close,” he cringed the first few times the other got to work.

While Kyle was busy, he would also set to work, absentmindedly moving the claw around on his own machine and getting nothing for several rounds…

“…shit, how many tickets do we need for those?” he belatedly realized a few minutes later.

"i'm not really sure," kyle answers. "i can help with farming tickets too if you want."

it's an excuse to play more games, but...

"i can just give this to you instead." he takes the small moltres and offers it to lars.

at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he gives this to her or not. she wasn't shallow when it comes to gifts anyways.

Yes, that was the legit first word out of his mouth… before he realized that Kyle may not be the sappy one between himself and Noah, after all.

“You know? I was thinking of having a little memorial shrine somewhere near the Mount Pyre crater set up. Like a little altar for her…” he mused, realizing that the miniature Moltres would be perfect.

“Now I just have to get a Charizard…to complete the pair.”

At the end of the day, it wasn’t the bigger one they ended up taking home, but the two smaller plush toys (a Moltres and a Charizard) after what felt like most of the quarters he’d cashed in.

“My hand-eye is worse than yours, man, I came close several times but finally, here it is,” he smirked, holding up the small Charizard plush as well.

to have the two fire-types side-by-side on a memorial that commemorates her seemed like a nice visual for his eyes. it'll definitely be the centerpiece of mt. pyre for a while.

"then i'll wait for it when you set it up."

if he's offering to make something extra such as that, then she must've been that important to him. kyle can't find himself offering to help when he might disturb a personal moment.

his watch rings, reminding him that he might have spent too much time playing games and that he needs to head back soon.

"oops, i have to go." as he heads to the exit, he turns briefly to lars. "better make it pretty. she's all about the effort," he teases.
