loss for her has always been a hollow ache. losing emma, losing her parents, losing alexander - all dealt with via stone-faced denial, the grief smothered beneath it withering slowly away until finally, when it was uncovered, there was nothing but dead leaves and scorched earth.

this is different. every breath hurts. her dragons tumble over themselves to smother her, rubbing away aches with their scales, offering warmth to her cold body, near frozen atop the pillar where she slept last night.

she looks listlessly at her duffel bag, but that hurts too, so she turns her head and noses into lyune's velvety wings and lets go.

just for a little while longer.

she awakens to low hisses, dreams scattered to the edges of her vision. she looks at her arms, expecting, for some reason, to see scales. and she does, only then moxie slithers out of her grasp and noses her cheek affectionately.

freya sits up. across from her rests a salamence she instantly recognizes not of her own. the rest of her ilk continue their humming grumbles of warning, but the salamence only stares, unblinking.

and then it looks towards lyune. the larger, scarred dragon forks out his tongue and then shifts his weight, head cocking. embers spurt from his nostrils. smoke lingers in the air.

and freya steps out of her nest of dragons, palm outstretched, and takes this one for her own.
