“Why do you think I have pent up anger, Theo?” she snaps, eyes flashing as her head whips from the battle toward him. “You!”[break][break]
That’s not wholly true. She’s carried the anger inside of her for so long it’s practically a part of her. But she’d started to change. In that other world, she had changed.[break][break]
But now it all feels tender raw, an open wound all over again.[break][break]
They spring in well-timed coordination. Practiced movements that parallel one another from years of working side-by-side. While her Lucario leaps to meet Zapdos, paws curled to batter at it with CLOSE COMBAT, Blue fluidly swivels her hips and plants her stance.[break][break]
She doesn’t care if he’s exasperated or if he’ll knock her down. She levels a sucker punch at Theo’s gut.

she levels him with a sucker punch, knocking the wind out of him as her fist squares against his gut. he tenses a little too late, forced to catch his breath as he stumbles back.

they've never fought like this before, at least not this physically, but times have changed and they have to as well or risk stagnating in a lost past.

the moment his foot hits the ground to support his weight, he lunges back to return a front kick to her gut.

It feels good to cut his words short, the whistle of air leaving his diaphragm as she makes contact.[break][break]
Her feet plant again, not losing ground as he stumbles back. She carries herself forward again, swinging with her other fist in an uppercut, though he’ll know it’s coming for sure this time.[break][break]
It feels sort of wrong too, though. Like she’s crossing some unspoken line she’d told herself she never would. Despite all of her anger, and her past, and her proclivity for using fists over words, Theo had never been on the other end of it.[break][break]
But he’d gone back on things she didn’t think he’d do, either.[break][break]
Staying in Rocket. Dragging her into it again.[break][break]
A part of her wishes he’d just left like he said he would.[break][break]
Blue braces for the kick that comes, but it catches her and uproots her stance. He’s taller, longer-limbed. She uses the stagger to spin, then hook around to batter at his sides. A low blow near the kidneys.

he expects nothing less from a trained fighter and brute like blue murtagh; someone who has to fight their way through life; someone with a permanent chip on their shoulder; someone who would rather lose than have their beliefs bent.

the uppercut is slipped, his kick misses, and a hook batters into his side. no matter how hard he may tense, there's no denying the sudden loss of breath he feels.

curiously, the hook he returns is aimed higher than usual, as though intended to easily allow her to slip under it.

For that moment, the battle against Zapdos is forgotten. All Blue can focus on is the fury she feels. The way it feels good to let it come flowing out like a tidal wave. Red tints her vision, and later she’ll be mad at herself.[break][break]
But an attack dog only does what it does best.[break][break]
She makes impact, battering at his ribs and she doesn’t let up or pull her punches. She lets Theo feel the impact of what she’s feeling.[break][break]
Rage. Grief. Frustration. Desperation.[break][break]
All of it pulled taut in her movements.[break][break]
Of course, she ducks under the poorly aimed swing, but she’s not stupid. She knows it’s intentional. But this only makes her feel madder. So when Blue swivels and cocks her first back again, this time she aims for his jaw.

purple blooms upon impact, bruises forming in the shape of her knuckles. he knows she knows, he's not stupid, and yet he makes no movement to avoid the final punch to his jaw. his head snaps sideways; his vision blurs; he stumbles back.

but he does not fall.

in tandem, zapdos' final wave of attack washes over the battlefield, potent enough to spill past the barrier of pokemon and onto the two of them. electricity dances along his skin, electrifying and stunning.

he drops to a knee, muscles aching.

Making contact both feels good and not at all. He was her mentor, her friend. She doesn’t know what to call him anymore, and this aches under the anger and frustration, but she fights him now in the way she was taught. She lands hits and doesn’t falter. Only follows through.[break][break]
Somewhere behind them, Zapdos’ attack levels Fang. The lucario skids and rolls across the ground, unable to throw up a defense before the thunderous attack throws him.[break][break]
Electricity crackles and fans out across the arena. It’s a shock to her system– of course it is. But Blue grits her teeth and weathers it, the rise and fall of her chest heavy as she spits and drags her arm across her mouth.[break][break]
She doesn’t look away from him, though.[break][break]
Red daggers remain fixed on Theo. Resentment festers in her expression just as much as the raw pain that still exists. Clouding her eyes until there’s no way to separate the feelings.[break][break]
“Is this really what you want?” she asks, voice leveling out to a distant flatness that wars with the anguish that lingers in all of that crimson.

Her breath falls in ragged gasps as she watches him. Wary, like a caged animal expecting repercussion for lashing out and behaving out of line. It’s a trained behavior, one she has always learned to expect. Even before her tenure within Rocket.[break][break]
The fact that she expects it now from him makes her feel sick to her stomach. And it’s nearly enough to break her in two. But she won’t fall apart because of him.[break][break]

“If you won’t let me go,” she gestures vaguely, and lets out a helpless laugh, “and we can’t go back..what am I supposed to do with that Theo?”[break][break]
She won’t.[break][break]
She teeters on the cusp of breaking, and it blurs her vision.[break][break]
“I can’t do this anymore. I can’t.”
Crumpling to her knees, Blue strikes at the earth with her fists again and again and again and again. It splits her knuckles, but she doesn’t relent. She doesn’t want this anymore, it has rotted her from the inside out, and she howls.[break][break]

Blue’s gaze falls, and her fingers curl tight in fists at her sides. This isn’t fair. Why should she have to deny every part of herself? There is so much bad in her, so much she can’t stand it.[break][break]
But there is also so much she has only begun to learn.[break][break]
The good parts, the parts that have been lost or denied to her for all of her life.[break][break]
Maybe a blank slate should feel like an opportunity. A new chance.[break][break]
It only feels overwhelming to her.[break][break]
“I’m not leaving Hoenn,” she says stubbornly. Her voice is hoarse from the shrieking. “I don’t want to die.” She looks up again, this time pleading. It feels so pathetic.[break][break]
At one time, she’d learned to accept it around him. To expose those soft, ugly pieces and know that it was okay. When did it stop?[break][break]
Why did it have to?[break][break]
“If you had just left like you said, this wouldn’t be happening.” Even as she says it, a part of her knows that it wouldn’t have ever come to that. He was rooted too deep. And she was stupid to have thought their bond made any sort of difference.

the deciding factor then was the simple fact that rocket hadn't existed in galar. with the organization non-existent, there was nothing that bound him, and so moving on felt natural.

team rocket exists here.

Blue has to wonder if those are truly the only options left to her. Why he’s so adamant it can only be one extreme or the other. She watches him as he stands, but makes no effort to move herself. She remains, knees and palms in the dirt as she turns her face up toward him.[break][break]
She used to look at him like he brought the sun after too long in the rain and gray.[break][break]

The frustration and heat has left her voice. Something pathetic continues to crawl up her throat.[break][break]

the truth is, she became somebody the moment she signed on the dotted line and sold her soul to team rocket, but that may not be what she's wanting or needing to hear at this moment nor is it what he wants to say. in fact, it doesn't even come to his mind.

Blue doesn’t want the finer technicalities. He could go through all of the logistical details, all the contractual notes. But it wouldn’t matter. She’s an invisible face in a sea of others who are like her. Just there to carry out the act. Why should it matter if she stayed or went? The wheel would keep turning without her.[break][break]
When Theo speaks, it’s with a gentleness she knows in the back of her mind. It tugs with a familiarity that makes something in her ache. But those lost years are foggy in her memory now. Try as she might, she can’t grasp them. Nor can she trust the Theo standing in front of her now to be the same Theo from a constructed, false reality.[break][break]
She is not stupid, she knows he is only saying what she’d like to hear.[break][break]
“Am I?” She laughs, the sound hollow. All of it hollow. In her ears, in the center of her chest. “Because I feel more like a pawn than somebody I just don’t believe you anymore, Theo.”[break][break]
She lifts herself back up, swaying lightly on her feet. “But that’s nothing new to me.”
