[attr="class","textbody"]Did anything beat a sunny day at a craft fair? Benji thought not. He'd even made the trip out to Lilycove just for this one. The whole thing got him dreaming a bit. Whimsical thoughts that maybe he could enroll in one the next time he came across one. Just to sell some pastries he'd been experimenting with.[break][break]

But that would also mean baking enough treats to last.[break][break]

Tall and broad as he was, he felt a little cramped stepping into a few of the booths with lower roofs. His head ducked as he stepped into one, posture slouching as he peered down at the rows of artisanal soaps and soy candles neatly lined up on tiered shelves.[break][break]

"Check it, Milo! These ones are made with gogoat milk." He pointed at a particular set of soaps in different colors, marked by the scented oils included in each. His furret trilled, pink-tipped tail swishing where his long body was draped over Ben's shoulder.[break][break]

"Do you think they have a ylang ylang one..." His words were muttered as he shuffled in a semi-circle, leaned forward to peer and squint at the labels. His glasses slid down his nose slightly and he pushed them back up before giving up and pushing them up to his forehead. As if that would somehow make his sight better and not worse.[break][break]

He continued his little shuffle dance, unaware of anyone but the vendor in the booth - that was, until he practically bodychecked someone much smaller. "Ah!" Benji startled, the jostling knocking his glasses back down, askew. But Benji didn't pay any attention to that. Instead, he blinked rapidly, hazel eyes wide. "Are you alright? I am so sorry, I should've been paying better attention to where I was stepping."

Sasha loved craft fairs. She never had opportunities to visit them as a child; her parents told her they were frivolous wastes of time. Yet her heart yearned to admire the beauty of the creative world, especially that made with others' hands. [break][break]

Since leaving home, she'd resolved to attend as many as she could. The annual fair in Lilycove was a favorite, one she enjoyed perusing again and again. [break][break]

One vendor in particular sold a variety of products made by Pokémon on their farm: Gogoat cheeses and soaps, Combee wax candles, and flowers tended by Cutiefly, to name a few. [break][break]

Sasha was admiring a beautiful wax rendering of a rearing Rapidash, turning it over in her hands, when someone walked right into her from behind. It was not the gentle bump of another customer in a small space, but instead felt like a small mountain had decided to run her over. [break][break]

"Ah!" she cried out as she dropped the candle, her hands scrambling to catch the edge of a table so she wouldn't fall into it. Mortified, she watched as the candle hit the floor, pieces of it break off from the main body. "Oh no!" [break][break]

She gathered the broken object in both hands and turned to the vendor. "I'm so sorry. I'll pay for this." [break][break]

Only then did Sasha turn to look at whoever—or whatever—had run her over. She found herself face-to-face with a tall, broad-shouldered man who looked as flustered as she felt. [break][break]

"I'm—I'm okay, yes, thank you." [break][break]

Then she hesitated. He should have been watching where he was going, but she should have had more awareness. Perhaps the crowdedness was why her mother hated craft fairs.

[attr="class","textbody"]Everything happened so quickly, it was hard to follow the chain of events as they unrolled. His hands reached out to steady her, but she caught herself with the table. But not before the candle dropped from her grasp, of course.[break][break]
Benji winced at the sight of it cracking against the ground, though it made no loud noise.[break][break]
Before he could say anything, she was apologizing to the owner and he felt terrible for the accident. Grimace still on his face, he peered down at the woman. She was cute, despite the mortification that was undoubtedly written across his face as much as it was hers.[break][break]
Benjamin, you clumsy idiot.[break][break]
He fixed his glasses, adjusting them on his nose with an awkward sort of fidgeting that practically indicated the precursor to more babbling. “Oh, good– I mean, not that I’m glad for the mistake, just that you’re alright. I’m kind of a giant in these little booths.” A realization brightened the hazel brown of his eyes. “But like, a gentle giant! Er, usually..”[break][break]
Embarrassed heat flushed up the back of his neck, and he was sure that his cheeks had started to darken with color the more he went on. His glance dropped to the broken candle in her hands, then then lifted back to her face. “I can pay for that,” he said with a sigh, shoulders drooping as he felt the telltale tinge of guilt.[break][break]
“It would’ve been all in one piece if I hadn’t bumped into you, after all.”

Sasha gave the stranger an awkward smile as he babbled, one that shifted into genuine gratitude when he offered to pay for the broken candle. She stood to the side as he and the vendor exchanged bills, still cradling the wax pieces in her hands. [break][break]

As soon as she was out of sight of the stall, she planned to throw them into the nearest trash bin. [break][break]

At that moment, Sasha's large tote purse wriggled. Dedenne was awake, roused by the earlier jostling. The small mouse poked her head out over the edge of the purse and immediately spotted the Furret draped over the stranger's shoulder. She erupted in a series of excited squeaks, tiny sparks flying from her cheeks. [break][break]

Sasha laughed lightly at her Pokémon's forwardness. To the stranger, she said, "I know how you can make it up to me. Dedenne wants to play with your Furret. Maybe we can have them run around outside where there's more space?"

[attr="class","textbody"] Benji was making a right, proper mess of this, huh? It was like his mind was screaming internally as he babbled out loud to the poor girl. Asking why he was still talking when, really, he should’ve just clamped his mouth shut the moment he noticed the awkwardly polite tug in her smile.[break][break]
Instead, his motor mouth kept right on chugging.[break][break]
His saving grace was turning to settled in with the vendor (who, he was sure, probably just wanted them out of the stall by that point.)[break][break]
His bespectacled stare lit upon the dedenne and quickly brightened. “Awfully cute mouse ya got,” he remarked, the furret on his shoulder chirping his agreement. “Alright, down you go, Milo.” He reached up at an awkward angle and plucked the fuzzy noodle off his shoulder. His long body swayed side to side before he wiggled and twisted free—eager for the proposed playtime.[break][break]
“I think we can manage that,” he said with a laugh, careful to not stumble into her again as he ducked under the entryway of the tent again so they could find an open space.[break][break]
Maybe he could manage to actually chat without making himself out to be a total dummy.[break][break]
“I swear, I don’t usually make a habit of running into people and breaking their stuff.” There was still lingering heat in his face, but he ignored it. The reassurance was also…sort of a tiny fib because he was clumsy as heck.[break][break]
Usually he just didn’t rope other people into his messes in the process. “Ah—I’m Benji, by the way. Er, Ben. Whichever, either, both. Just not Benjamin.”

As soon as Sasha stepped out of the stall and into open air, she felt better. Freed from such cramped quarters, she could slip into the crowd for an easy escape—another of her mother's lessons. [break][break]

But she did not. Instead, she committed the stranger's name to memory. [break][break]

"I'm Sasha," she said. The name came so easily now, as if she'd been born with it. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ben." With her hands full of the broken candle, she had an excuse not to shake his own in introduction. He seemed strong enough to crush her fingers. [break][break]

Dedenne hopped out of her purse as she made her way to a trash bin. The small mouse hurried toward the Furret, bouncing up and down in excitement, and started running circles around the larger Pokémon. [break][break]

"Don't run off too far," Sasha reminded Dedenne gently as she surreptitiously slipped the candle into the bin. She spied a bench nearby and sat down on it. "We'll be right here, okay?"

[attr="class","textbody"] His smile brightened as she introduced herself, pleased that she didn’t simply want to write him off for his blundering. “Likewise, Sasha!” He followed her lead, trailing after her as some of the crowd broke up as they moved toward the fringes of the fair.[break][break]
“Same as she said, bud,” he echoed, looking down at the furret who chirped, ears twitching in acknowledgement before he tumbled after the dedenne with gleeful enthusiasm.[break][break]
Following after her, Benji settled himself on the open side of the bench, angling toward her as his fingers tangled together—absently fidgeting. “So, you come here often?” Ar-ce-us, he sounded like some absolute piece of work sidling up at the bar.[break][break]
“Uhh, craft fairs, I mean—do you like them?” A sheepish chuckle followed, eyes darting from her, to his hands.[break][break]
“Oh!” he stuck his hand out toward her, smile broad and quick to return despite the fact that he kept embarrassing himself, “Now I can properly make your acquaintance, on account of you not holding the candle anymore and all…the candle I made you break—er.”[break][break]
If she chose to shake his hand, she’d find that his grasp was a careful thing despite his clumsiness and stature. Accustomed as he was to tending Pokémon with careful precision, depending on the circumstance.

Sasha could not help an awkward laugh at Benji's rambling. She did finally shake his hand, surprised to find his grasp careful, not clumsy. A light blush colored her cheeks as she inwardly chastised herself for her earlier judgmental thoughts. [break][break]

"I do, actually," she replied, releasing his hand and setting hers back in her lap. "I paint and draw in my free time, so it's always interesting to come to these fairs and see other people's art, too. Even if it's not all painting and drawing." [break][break]

She settled against the back of the bench, turning her head slightly to make sure their Pokémon remained in her peripheral vision. [break][break]

"What about you? Do you come to these often?" she asked Benji, though she was sure she'd have seen him before if he did.

[attr="class","textbody"] When Sasha chose to return the handshake, his smile widened. Her hand felt small in his, though that was pretty par the course. Color rose in her face, just a tiny bit, but he didn’t think much of it–or opt to tease her. Undoubtedly, he’d only succeed in making some sort of blunder if he attempted it.[break][break]
He perked at the affirmative response, expression lightening up with curiosity. “Really? That sounds nice–I mean, I don’t think I could do much more than finger painting, but… it’s always so fun to see the talent at these sorts of things. And the different styles people use.” Benji’s fingers laced together neatly, thumbs twiddling. “What sorts of painting do you like to do?”[break][break]
Brown eyes narrowed in a show of playful scrutiny as he peered at her. “I’ll bet you’re good at it, though.” His focus melted away and he grinned and sat back against the bench again.[break][break]
“Me? Well, when I can. When I’m not working, that is.” His nose scrunched up a bit, and he let out a short breath of laughter. “Can’t say I’m all too crafty, though, admittedly. Cooking? Sure, but other DIY things? I tend to fumble ‘em.”[break][break]
He had the spirit, though! And it was just fun and pleasant to wander around to different tents– never quite managing to see the same thing twice.

"Oh, mostly people and landscapes," Sasha replied. Taking out her phone, she opened the Photos app to show Benji a few examples of her digital drawings. "Sometimes I like to paint with oils on canvas, but other times I enjoy digital painting on my tablet." [break][break]

After he'd had a chance to thumb through a few, she rested her phone on her lap. "What do you do for work?" she asked. [break][break]

Judging by the condition of his hands, he didn't make a habit of regular manual labor, which left obvious careers like construction off the table. His height and build suited desk work as much as a more ambulatory career, so she couldn't rely on that characteristic for any educated guesses. [break][break]

Was Benji the sort of man who was clumsy in many situations except for his job? That was possible, too.

[attr="class","textbody"] A quiet oooh followed the explanation as her phone was tilted toward him, filled with examples of her work. His attention shifted between the screen and her face. “These are really good. I think I never got any better past finger painting in elementary school.” [break][break]
He admired art–that’s why he was here, after all, but he was definitely lousy in practice.[break][break]
“I bet you’d do great if you had a booth at one of these fairs!” he added cheerily, head nodding with definitive confidence.[break][break]
But when talk turned toward his own career, he turned a bit sheepish. Despite his passion for it, the show he’d made of himself only minutes before would probably lend to an impression of his incompetence. Even if he wasn’t.[break][break]

A faint blush colored Sasha's cheeks at Benji's confidence in her hypothetical success. She shook her head. "Art doesn't pay as well or as consistently as my day job. I work as a secretary," she said, choosing not to share the exact details of her employment. [break][break]

The revelation of Benji's own occupation caught her off guard. Never would she have imagined the man to be a Pokémon doctor. Her suspicions waned and her body relaxed almost imperceptibly. In fact, she flashed him a small smile. [break][break]

After all, how harmful could a man be if he treated ill and injured Pokémon? [break][break]

"Really? You take care of Pokémon?" she asked, interest piqued. "That's amazing. You must have a lot of work here, all things considered." [break][break]

She briefly glanced at her Dedenne, still playing with his Furret. [break][break]

"I don't know what I'd do if something were to happen to Dedenne—or to any of my other Pokémon, really." Her gentle smile for Benji widened. "Sometimes it seems to me that people in your line of work perform miracles."

[attr="class","textbody"] Benji shrugged, undeterred. “Maybe not, but extra income isn’t a bad thing!” He couldn’t blame her for wanting that security, but even so, pursuing a gift didn’t need to be full-time. “I’m just sayin’, if you set up shop just to see how ya did, I’d totally buy one of your paintings.”[break][break]
His own smile widened when he was greeted with hers. It was a cute smile in its own right–tiny and not exactly shy, but pleasantly reserved.[break][break]
“I do! It doesn’t really feel like work most of the time, because I enjoy working with pokemon. And meeting the people who care about them.” His nose wrinkled, and he laughed quietly. “But yeah, there’s been an abundance of situations to fix up here lately.”[break][break]
Injuries, a short-term influx of poisonings and heightened toxicity. The displacement of several wild pokemon. All of it was…concerning, actually, but he didn’t attempt to get into it right then.[break][break]
“I’m just here to do my best by the people who ask for help,” he said with a definitive nod. His gaze traveled toward their companions as well, “I don’t think it’s miracle work by any stretch, but it’s nice to know that I can bring relief to someone who’s worried about their friend. Family.”

As Sasha took in Benji's reaction, the softness of her smile deepened. "You seem like a really kind and wholesome man, Ben," she declared, her tone gentle, her admiration genuine. [break][break]

How rare. Though he'd surprised her at first with his clumsiness, she was coming around to the idea that perhaps he was not the sort of person who meant any harm. Too many did, and she was conditioned to expect it. [break][break]

Dedenne bounded over and hopped onto Sasha's lap, squeaking in a demanding way. Laughing, she asked, "What is it? Are you hungry?" [break][break]

The rodent nodded, so she gathered Dedenne up in her arms and stood. [break][break]

"I should look for something to eat for this little one," she said apologetically to Benji. "It was nice meeting you, Ben. Enjoy the rest of the fair."
