it's less than an hour later he's arrived at her doorstep, a care package in hand. she'd been vague about her ailments so he'd gotten a round of generics - thermaflu, cough drops, day and nyquil, liquid iv, and a pick-me-up of some chicken udon from one of his favorite restaurants in lilycove.

most of the taxi ride over had been spent scowling in impatience, worried the soup would get cold by the time he finally arrived, but coronabeth had given it a few short puffs before he smoothed out his shirt and walked up to the door.

he hoists the bags into one hand and knocks with his other.

Mei Liu had left for work, leaving Yumi alone in the apartment to fend for herself. At least she felt reassured that nikkari hect was visiting, though she intended to send him away right after in the event she was contagious. [break][break]

The knock on the door announced his arrival. Dressed in loose silk pajamas that covered her modestly, Yumi shuffled over to let him in. Her Sinistcha floated close behind her, ready to assist in case she needed it. [break][break]

"Hey," she greeted Nikkari softly, too exhausted to embody her usual energy and attitude. Closing the door behind him, she eyed the bags he carried. "You can leave that on the kitchen table."

for some reason, he is not prepared to see the softened version of the woman he's come to know these past few months. his surprise is but a brief flash - a slight widening of his eyes, a shifting of the bags in hand - and then he recovers, stepping in to follow her directions.

"it's better when it's hot," he says as he places the care package gently on the counter and then withdraws the deli container with the udon.

"please sit. where might i find the bowls?"

Her thoughts muddled by brain fog, Yumi took a moment to comprehend what Nikkari meant by his question. When it finally clicked, she shook her head and gestured vaguely toward the door. [break][break]

"Oh, don't worry about it. I'll serve myself. You bringing medicine and food is more than enough. And anyway, I don't want you catching anything." [break][break]

She entered the kitchen and fetched a bowl, spoon, and chopsticks for herself without even knowing what type of soup he'd brought. Meanwhile, her Sinistcha floated over to inspect the other contents of the care package. [break][break]

Moments later, a sharp crash filled the apartment as the empty bowl shattered on the floor. [break][break]

"Fuck," Yumi swore under her breath, one hand gripping the countertop as if to keep herself from falling over. Her eyes squeezed shut against a sudden dizziness.

"i've a strong immune system," he promises sharply as he cracks open the top of the deli. to his satisfaction, steam rises up and out of the top and rather quickly, the smell of the rich, brothy dish is thick in the air. he has every intention of leaving if she insists on her behalf, but his own?

nonsense.

he startles when the bowl shatters and some of the soup sloshes onto his hand. just a bit. enough to make him think ow, but not enough to stop him from turning, hand going to yumi's back.

"please," he says. "i insist. let me help you down. do you have water by the couch?" his hand drops, from shoulder to waist, a clerical touch meant to support.

Yumi leaned into Nikkari's touch unconsciously, her free hand grasping his arm for support. Later, she would register the feel of hard muscle under his clothing, but in that moment, all she wanted was for the dizziness to subside. [break][break]

"Yes, my glass, right there," she replied, gesturing vaguely in its direction. Her head drooped, causing locks of straight black hair to fall as a curtain in front of her face. [break][break]

Once on the couch, she felt much safer. More grounded. She leaned against the cushions and rested her head against the back, covering her eyes with her hand. Slowly, the sensation passed, and her body sagged with relief. [break][break]

A coolness washed over Yumi as her Pokémon cast LIFE DEW over her head. Finally, she opened her eyes. Weariness lined her face. "I don't know what's wrong with me," she confessed to Nikkari.

she is fretfully unlike herself, which is troubling. at the very least, he's glad she doesn't put up much of a fuss to his touch; he helps her down, adjusts the pillows and blankets for her comfort, and then ensures her water is well within reach before sticking his nose in the pantry to find a broom.

"have you seen a physician?" he asks. he fetches another bowl and steps around the mess for the time being.

"eat," he commands as he sets the steaming bowl in front of her, chopsticks and spoon arranged neatly beside it. he moves off to tidy; meanwhile, crown makes herself at home by leaping up onto her couch and curling against her, fluff providing body heat.

Yumi did not resist that time, not the bowl of soup Nikkari placed in front of her nor the welcome warmth of his Vulpix as she, too, curled up on the sofa. Instead, a sense of deep gratitude trickled into her heart. She picked up the bowl and took a careful sip of the broth. [break][break]

"Not yet," she said, shaking her head. "I thought I would just ride it out. Whenever I got sick before, I'd just sleep a lot and take cold medicine." [break][break]

Except her illness did not feel like a cold or even the flu. She felt poisoned, as if something toxic had rooted itself inside her and refused to be flushed out. [break][break]

"It's possible I overexerted myself," Yumi continued thoughtfully, in between bites of noodles, vegetables, and meat. [break][break]

"The expansion into Slateport has been taking up so much of my time. Plus, I've been running into all these Pokémon acting strangely on the routes."

while he's no stranger to home remedies, she seems too worse for wear to simply ride it out. but then again, he knows little of her symptoms and if she insists it's just a nasty bug, then it must be so.

he crouches down to pick up the larger pieces of the broken bowl, pausing when she mentions her expansion into slateport. a smile flashes over his face and then disappears by the time he's standing and rooting around for her trash can to dispose of the mess.

"ah, i've read some reports about those. thought the news was blowing it out of proportion until we saw some of our grunts bringing in word from the field. it could be toxic exposure and if that's the case, i'd recommend seeing one of our physicians." he helps himself to a glass of water and sits on the couch opposite her, making himself comfortable.

"as for slateport, allow me to help."

Yumi chewed thoughtfully as Nikkari mentioned toxic exposure. He was probably right—he usually was, in truth. Swallowing, she sighed and set the bowl back down onto the coffee table. "You're right. I'll ask Mei to help me arrange a visit when she gets back." [break][break]

Mentioning her Slateport expansion perked her up mentally, even if she felt too run into the ground to feel any burst of excited energy. [break][break]

"You want to help?" she asked, both genuinely surprised and warmed by the offer. "It's still the early stages of planning—we still need to acquire a building—but I've been meeting with marketing and accounting for a few weeks now." [break][break]

She heaved another sigh. "It's been a lot of work, but we're making progress."
