"it's been some time, hasn't it?"

Cillian loathed hospitals. Before becoming an underboss, he'd avoided most medical attention like the plague. Being perceived in his moments of weakness was one of the most unsettling feelings he'd been made to endure.[break][break]

Now, with his position of power, he could not afford to neglect his physical health so brazenly. He consented to check-ups where Rocket (or his husband Tempest Quinn) demanded.[break][break]

But mental health? Never.[break][break]

He felt fine. He was sure that he was fine. Why waste someone else's time?[break][break]

But THEO BECKETT had asked, and though his fellow underboss had no power over him any longer, the power of friendship was as strong as any rank. It was not a difficult request to acquiesce to, and so he had.[break][break]

"Dr. Kotov."[break][break]

Though mildly uncomfortable in uncharted territory, Cillian conceals it well behind his stoic mask as he shakes the doctor's outstretched hand.[break][break]

"It has." His body language indicates a brief moment of tension. Kotov knew him best as a sniveling grunt beneath Beckett's heel. It was strange to present before the man as someone who outranked him, someone deserving of respect. It was a feeling he got when interacting with any of his Kanto peers for the first time in a while. Surreal. "I hope you've been well."[break][break]

Though he intentionally directs the conversation away from himself and his own discomfort, Cillian's words are genuine. He liked Kotov.

marcus smiles disarmingly, sensing the there-and-gone tension that flits through the underboss. the hierarchy has shifted since Cillian Quinn left kanto, but he can tell that he's grown in their time apart. though he may want for the days where their roles were reversed, he does feel a twinge of pride to see kanto rockets taking footholds within hoenn's branch. [break][break]Cillian Quinn. THEO BECKETT. jayden cross. [break][break]his own life is made easier here by association. [break][break]"i have been," he says, dipping his head with acknowledgement. "though it has certainly been an adjustment coming here."[break][break]marcus doesn't think he needs to elaborate. cillian, in all his experience, must know how abnormal this region is. he can deal with fighting the league or civilians despising him, but he finds himself feeling like the sky is about to fall every time a new problem in hoenn crops up.[break][break]he punctuates the confession with a laugh, short and polite, and then his attention turns to the underboss. [break][break]"how have you been?" there's a thread of concern in his voice, prying at cillian's reasoning for coming here. he wonders if it's purely to appease THEO BECKETT, or if he's another struggling avatar. "are you doing alright?"

Smiles rarely put Cillian at ease. He knew well the smile of predators, the hopes to disarm in spite of sharp teeth made for killing.

No, what puts him at ease is the conversation, the small admission of feeling out of place. As much as being in this room was an adjustment for Cillian, being in this region felt the same for Marcus.

Cillian laughs, too.

"No doubt. Never a dull moment, and never a moment's rest."

He'd hated it at first, but he's come to almost crave the danger and uncertainty. Which was certainly a point toward THEO BECKETT's concerns for his mental health. It had been Avatarship to change him, after all.

But, blind to it willing or no, Cillian shrugs and takes a seat.
[break][break]
"No worse off than anyone else gearing up for war. You've heard the buzzing, I'm sure." That the League was gearing up for something big. That Rocket had its sights set on Mossdeep. That war was on their horizon. "Was Th- Underboss Beckett that asked me to drop in, and I'm sure my husband," which was a new development in his life since Marcus has known him, a Luvdisc ring flashing on his left hand as he gesticulates, "wouldn't be far behind in badgering me."

Though exasperated, there's a fondness there as well. THEO BECKETT and Tempest Quinn were dear to him.

His tone reads genuine; the last thing the underboss wants to do is waste a good Rocket's time.

There's a pinch to Cillian's expression when his grunt days are recalled.

"Please don't," is said in jest, yet there's a note of sincerity to it as he subconsciously rubs at the back of his neck. His days as a weak, cowering pawn embarrassed him. "Pretend I'm an entirely new person. Cillian Quinn, nice to meet you."

He laughs to shed some of the discomfort.
[break][break]
But his expression is quick to sober when they cut back to the reason for the appointment. Cillian inclines his head.[break][break]

"He's worried for my mental health, specifically on account of my Avatarship."[break][break]

That, too, was a new development.

"are you worried? you said a moment ago that you're no worse off than the rest of us, no?"[break][break]he breaks eye contact, looking toward the chair across from his desk. he motions toward it with the generous extension of his arm. [break][break]"have a seat, if you'd like, and we can figure out underboss beckett's concerns together."

I don't believe you, Cillian thinks, narrowed eyes suggestions such suspicions, but he does not challenge the doctor openly. He sees little point.[break][break]
