They wore chains too, after all. Perhaps they'd merely submitted more eagerly to the influence of whatever the hell the 'Never-Rot' was.[break][break]

"Mm," Cillian grunts, affirming Zev's suspicions. He had hated the title at first, WEAKLING, but they'd placed his husband in the DUMMY ward. Either it was meant to be whatever insulted the prisoner most, or their captors had poor judgement. "Weakling. Sato and Zeppelin are, too." He doesn't mention his sister; she was no brass. Let her escape Harcourt's notice. "Temp's in Dummy. You got any familiar faces in yours?"[break][break]

There are other questions he wants to ask of someone from the UGLY ward, but he starts with the obvious.

Cillian's dreams were often nightmares. But this nightmare, though it featured the dreaded Ultra Megalopolis, saw him whole of body and free of chains. He does not feel safe, but he feels as if he can breathe again.[break][break]

When he summons the SHADOW MIASMA to wreathe him like a shroud, he could have wept. He doesn't.[break][break]

Instead, he finds shelter in shadow, and explores a city barely recognizable from the one visited in the Ultra Wilds. It seems lively, now.[break][break]

The sight of Zev Harcourt makes him tense. Not truly realising that they were real, he assumes the Devourer to be another manifestation of night terrors. But when the Beast speaks to him, Cillian frowns. Reassesses.[break][break]

"As real as you are, I suppose."[break][break]

The second question is easier.[break][break]

"Plenty, but no one I recognize. Can't quite focus on them." A realization. "This isn't a normal dream, then. Strange."

Cillian crawls closer to Tempest Quinn in the dark, desperate to be near him. To hold him, to know he was still breathing.[break][break]

He doesn't have the energy to speak. Everything hurts. He's had broken ribs before, recognizes the agony with each drawn breath. He takes shallow sucks of air to try and counteract the pain, reaching for his husband's hand. He finds his torso, instead, but leaves his hand there. It's enough to be close. To feel the rise and fall of breath. To survive.[break][break]

There's so much he wants to say.[break][break]

His sister's voice echoes in the open space, his name followed by a choked syllable that might've been Temp. He wants to call out to Lulu Flint, to let her know he's OK, but the showers turn on in that moment and all he can manage is a gasp of shock followed by a pained groan as the sharp intake aggravates broken ribs.[break][break]

He couldn't strip down even if he wanted to. It hurts so much.[break][break]

He closes his eyes and lets the water wash away blood, sweat, and MOCHI. It's frigid, but the cold is a comfort to a child of Circhester. He presses himself close to Tempest Quinn, sharing sparse body heat, knowing his husband will not enjoy the chill half as much.[break][break]

Too soon, it's over. The chain tightens around his neck, and they'd herded like sheep back to their cells.[break][break]

On the platform, before the inevitable separation, Cillian endures the pain to whisper a simple, "Love you," to his husband.[break][break]

And then he is gone.

He doesn't have the strength to resist being reeled in like a hooked fish, letting the chain half-drag him to his cell as he tries to force battered legs to keep up with its pull.[break][break]

Changing into the fresh garb is agonizing, yet he does not cry out. He bites his tongue hard enough to taste blood, but he will not give Remiel Calcifet the satisfaction of hearing his pain. He's trembling with it when he finishes, slumping to the floor without even a thought to fighting over the single cot. He's had worse. All he wants to do now is sleep.

Howard almost laughs. Cillian remains severe.[break][break]

"You've not lost that life, yet."[break][break]

He is cold, firm. The threat, though not explicit, is hardly disguised. If howard slayte were suicidal, he'd found the right tool to do something about it. Cillian was more patient than many of his Kanto-bred colleagues, but no less capable.[break][break]

He ignores the continued stress about Shred's name.[break][break]

"Did you see a Spotlight cast, perhaps?" He imagines Howard would've mentioned it if so, but includes the ask to be thorough. Then: "There were several Avatars on the field, our own and otherwise. Did you notice their behaviour surrounding the incident?"

Cillian has to stifle the urge to laugh, figuring Elisabeth wouldn't take kindly to that. He does that, he thinks, but it's fond where Elisa had been scathing.[break][break]

Aloud, he says, "He may just be trying to help. He's a little, mm. Socially inept?" Constipated is the word that comes to mind, but he opts for a diplomatic alternative. THEO BECKETT wasn't good at soft talks and encouragement. He was good at getting results in the worst ways. Once, Cillian had hated him for that, too. "I'd ask if he'd tried to poison you yet, but you're immune."[break][break]

Though his expression and tone read serious, he's joking.[break][break]

Grim certainty at her lack of murderous intent subsides into a softer relief as she confirms it.[break][break]

"Intense," he affirms. "As much as I can tolerate, and stepping it up over time. If there's war on the horizon, I don't have the time to take it slow."[break][break]

It's why he'd sought out the best.

Cillian's mood seems oddly bouyant, a smile sitting easy on his normally severe face. It falters a little when BARNABY FINCH shifts the subject, though he doesn't seem upset. Curious, more than anything.

Leaning against the rail, dangling a fish for a curious Spheal, he bites.
[break][break]

"Nothing bad, I hope."
[break][break]

But Cillian's tone suggests a bracing for the potential. They're in Rocket, on the cusp of war. Bad was the most likely outcome.[break][break]

Patient, he waits, tossing a ball at the Spheal while it's distracted with its fish.

Dressed in civilian casuals instead of his normal suit, with his hair ruffled from the wind and the scar on his cheek covered with make-up, Cillian barely resembles Rocket's infamous underboss. He's not worried about being recognized.[break][break]

"I don't usually bother," Cillian admits, smirking over his cup of tea. It was some sort of peppermint and vanilla blend, and it tasted almost as good as it smelled. Almost good enough to ignore what the staff were wearing. If he couldn't see Lilycove's harbour through the window and hear the murmur of other patrons' soft chatter, he could almost be back in Galar. "Tea's good."[break][break]

He'd also ordered a tray of biscuits, and Amor Rose would find him nibbling on one as he arrived.[break][break]

Where ameena abadi might try to feign pleasantries (or not), Cillian goes straight for the heart.[break][break]

"Come here for the view?"[break][break]

He's not looking at the harbor. Instead, his gaze shifts surreptitiously to one of the employees and then back again.[break][break]

"Or is it your ego you like stroked?"

"I know," is whispered back, soft.[break][break]

Sometimes it frightens him, like when the RVL app had offered an unwanted glimpse into the potential of his husband's psyche. Mostly, though, he was comforted to know that someone cared so much about him.[break][break]

Temp pokes his arm, and Cillian glances down at it. His veins are a soft blue beneath pale skin, no trace of the corruption they'd seen before.[break][break]

"Dunno," he admits with a shrug. "Same thing that made Lugia turn purple, I guess." He looks suddenly horrified. "Fuck, I hope I don't turn purple. Kinda cool when it's just the veins, but I don't wanna be a fuckin' cartoon."[break][break]

He'd never considered tentacles, either. Until now.[break][break]

"I don't... think... that would happen?" He smirks. "Bet you'd like it if I did, though. Wouldn't need rope, then." A sigh, before Cillian traces his fingers down Temp's arm and grabs his wrist. Possessive, tight, but not an unbreakable hold. "But we'll make do, hm? We've certainly had the practice."

Cillian barely has time to register the Naganadel's missing arm before its stinger, wholly intact, sinks into his flesh.[break][break]

Colour drains from his face. Where the stinger penetrates, deep purple corruption spreads out from the source, a network of pulsing purple replacing the pale blue of veins.[break][break]

He does not scream. His muscles tense and he pitches forward as much as the straps binding him will allow. A horrible sound escapes from his throat, somewhere between a hiss of pain and a furious growl. The fury is blinding.[break][break]

His heart is pounding wildly, the adrenaline seeing him strain hard enough against the straps to put worrying stress upon them. Blessedly, his Avatarship has never granted him strength. Only the adrenaline boosts it, now, and then not enough to see him break free.[break][break]

It's fortunate, for Beckett. Cillian doesn't speak, but the look in his eyes is murderous. As the toxin continues to spread through his system, the familiar gold of his gaze is struck through with vicious violet.[break][break]

"Let me go."[break][break]

Had Beckett ever heard Lugia speak, he might recognize the thrum of corruption beneath his friend's deep tones.

Having assembled the pieces by hand, he was not ignorant to their flaws. So, when Aurelie Lefevre expresses her disdain, he does not immediately assume himself to be the cause. Instead, he merely asks, "Oh?"[break][break]

She confirms his suspicions, not without some self-directed frustrations.[break][break]

"I was a scientist once, you know." A strange thing to bring up suddenly, it might seem, until he elaborates, "You rarely get things right the first time. No shame in learning from mistakes and trying again."[break][break]

It was a pep talk, as much as someone as severe as Cillian Quinn could give. She might not need it, but he offers it all the same.[break][break]

And when she apologizes, he offers a dismissive flick of his wrist.[break][break]

"No harm done. My schedule's clear for the afternoon; it's why I felt comfortable stopping by." He'd originally cleared it with the intention of spending the afternoon with Tempest Quinn, but his husband had been called out on Beast duties. "I'm happy to lend my continued assistance."

He is blunt as a hammer in his admission, as though it were no big deal. It was definitely a big deal.[break][break]

"I'd imagine I'm far different than a Pokemon," with an easy enough laugh, "but I thought you might be interested in the results all the same. And I'd trust your research has given you a fair idea of when to pull the plug, so to speak."[break][break]

He flashes a vial of ANTIDOTE. "Not a suicide mission, see. Just an attempt to build immunity."
