He can't explain it, but something doesn't sit right with him. He orders coffee (black) and takes a seat in the corner booth (empty) and waits for BARNABY FINCH to appear. It's a reasonable request, to meet at this diner. They'd done so before.[break][break]
But something doesn't feel right.[break][break]
Beneath the table, Umi curls, the shadow Umbreon barely discernible save for her glowing red eyes. It's not that he doesn't trust Barnaby, it's that he doesn't trust Rocket. He doesn't put it past them to use even the most innocuous establishment as a venue for villainy.[break][break]
And he is right.[break][break]
"I don't use that name anymore," he automatically corrects, glancing up at THEO BECKETT. He's aged.[break][break]
The Rocket Underboss's polite gesture is a false promise of diplomacy.[break][break]

"Nice try," he flashes Theo a horrible grin. The coffee's black but it suddenly doesn't taste so bitter. There's something sickly sweet about realizing his brother's associates think they can use him as a fear tactic, expect Caleb to roll over at the mere mention of Zev's name, as if suggesting Zev gives even one miniscule shit about Caleb anymore. He hadn't even killed Caleb when he'd begged him for it.[break][break]
"Talk about him now," a slight snarl, a barring of teeth. Perhaps Theo would see it then: a flash of the wolf in the eyes of the dog. Beneath the table, Umi echoes the sentiment with a rumble of her own. "Why wait? You don't actually care how I am, and I have no interest in telling you."[break][break]

Necrozma.[break][break]
A nightmarish monster locked in battle with the poisonous dragon that had corrupted the world. He remembers the hopelessness he'd felt in that dreamlike Galar, staring up at the essence of destruction, death looming like a halo over his head. In that moment, he connects what he'd seen (survived) there to the black crystal armor encasing his brother on the night he'd escaped Rocket on the outskirts of Sootopolis.[break][break]
And it makes sense.[break][break]
"There's a reason," he croaks. "You really don't know it? Zev and that creature are one and the same."[break][break]
It is a cruel joke, surely born out of some cosmic algorithm, a result of nature's harsh design. Once, he might have blamed this unfair outcome - that a man like Zev would be so epically rewarded for his malice - on his own pathetic failures, the only appropriate consequence of the sins he, Caleb Harcourt, had committed. But now? He can see that it has nothing to do with him. This was always meant to be.[break][break]
It should be a relief, but it only makes him tired.[break][break]
"I feel certain of one thing," he tells Theo. "That we're all fucked."

Rather charming. That part sticks with him. It's an oddly phrased compliment, as if it's coming from someone else's mouth. He can taste BARNABY FINCH's mocking chuckle as if the man's lips had just parted from his own, playful fingers tracing the lines of his jaw.[break][break]

It is the mercy of BARNABY FINCH that keeps Caleb alive. A position he himself voluntarily agreed to, prone to drinking poison out of loyalty to a dream.[break][break]
He doesn't know a thing, Caleb realizes. None of them do.[break][break]
The exact nature of his...relationship with the Rocket Admin had been kept secret even from Barnaby's leadership. An interesting tidbit learned through this otherwise bizarre - and somewhat pointless - interaction.[break][break]
"I guess I have Arceus to thank for my good fortune."[break][break]
He grins at Theo, then takes another sip of coffee.[break][break]
Caleb had always known that one day, Rocket would outlive its usefulness to his brother. Therefore, Theo's admission does not shock him.[break][break]
"Zev's doing whatever he wants? That doesn't surprise me," Caleb chuckles, humorless and dry. "Zev was always going to tire of Rocket - he's not great at deferring to authority. There's only one way to keep him tethered to your goals." Another obvious fact, overlooked. "You have to put him in charge."[break][break]
Underboss, perhaps. It was a role he could have pictured Zev in, back in Kanto. Necrozma does change things, he supposes. Zev might not settle for even that, now.[break][break]
"I'm not aligning with shit," he scoffs. "League pissing me off, Rocket pissing me off. I fight for the people who matter to me, who are actually trying to do some good around here." He glares at Theo with a sudden conviction. "And that's sure as hell not you."

It feels like a minor victory, the way THEO BECKETT squirms and scoffs over Caleb's convictions. All the same, they're wasting time. This exchange is nothing more than pointless banter, not unless they can push past the misguided expectation that Caleb would go back to Rocket.[break][break]
"Does it matter?"[break][break]
It's nuance they need. Always, things are so black and white. Forced into boxes: League or Rocket, good or bad. Caleb does not need to go crawling back to a terrorist organization to be of some use to Theo, and for Theo to be of some use to him.[break][break]
"Look. You want me to help you against Zev? I'll do it. But you need to give me something."[break][break]
