A simple text to a friend Oscar had not seen in a long time. The last time Oscar interacted with Cillian Quinn directly, the man was still going by the name Gavin. He was one of the first people Oscar sought out after returning to Hoenn, but alas his duties as an Underboss kept him busy. Months later, and Oscar would require his assistance with something very important to his research. Things were calmer now, surely nothing would prevent him from making an appearance.

Oscar waited within the designated laboratory, rolling Genesect Prime's red ball around on a desk between his hands. Cillian would show up right? Surely he missed Oscar too. What if he was mad because Oscar did not manage to contact him all this time? That would make for a very awkward reunion. The prospect made him nervous though, which caused him to jump slightly as the doors to the lab swung open.

Oscar turned in his chair, his anxiety melting away as he looked upon his dear friend.

"Hey there Cil. Am I allowed to call you Cil?"

Cillian had, in fact, missed oscar clayton dearly. He always tried to make time for friends, but there'd been no time to make with the preparations of war. After having to cancel a few times in a row, he'd simply forgot to keep trying. It wasn't personal, but the text floods him with guilt.[break][break]

I'll be there. I missed you, too.

This time, he cancels an appointment to ensure he has the time for a friend. In the aftermath of imprisonment, he needs those bonds to keep him sane.[break][break]

Cillian cracks a smile as he enters the room, looking a little out of sorts. Uncertain, as though he half expects Oscar to lash out at him.[break][break]

A soft laugh breaks that tension. "Course you can, Oz."[break][break]

The luxury ball in Cillian's hand looks no different to any on his belt, save of course the empty Beast Ball whose occasional occupant slumbered now in the deep.[break][break]

"Sorry it's been so long, work's been — well. I'm sure you know." Oscar had held once the mantle of both Beast and scientist, and knew more than most the organization's issues. "How've you been? You look great!"[break][break]

Not an incredibly high bar, considering Oscar had been dying last they'd spoke.

Oscar stood up as Cillian entered fully, unable to stop himself from smiling. "You know you don't have to apologize." Oscar chuckled at such a notion, going in for a brief embrace. There was no greater symbol of last friendship than a hug between bros. As Oscar pulled away, he did a little turn to show just how much better he was.

"Yeah I kicked that shit hard. I mean I'm still pale as fuck but that's normal. You look great too, not even a little stressed." Oscar backed up and took a seat on the desk itself, crossing his legs as he pulled up Genesect's ball. He would have loved to catch more, but there was work to be done first. "Did you bring your robot?"

He had not been raised a hugger, yet meets Oscar's embrace without hesitation. In spite of his upbringing, Cillian is a man who quietly craves affection.[break][break]

His lip twitches at the reassurance, appreciative.[break][break]

"Only a little paler than me, now." Cillian's fair skin, dotted with freckles, was an oddity in Hoenn's tropical climate. It marked him as foreign, no matter how long he'd lived here. He laughs, sharp, when the compliment is returned. "You used to be a better liar. I've been having a terrible time of it, but," he shrugs, appearing far more blasé than he was, "c'est la vie."[break][break]
He tosses the ball in his hand, catching it again.

"Got it right here. Whatcha need it for?"[break][break]

He doesn't release it, remembering the instruction.

Down to brass tacks, Oscar grinned with barely contained excitement. He held up his own ball, admiring its polished sheen within the light of the lab. "Prime has been displaying a peculiar behavior as of late. It's been meeting several members of its kind--'chatting' with them. In every instance, the other Genesect would suddenly display signs of developing an identity."

Oscar held the ball between his hands, "I want Prime to chat with your Genesect while we observe the conversation. I have impressed upon Prime the value of individuality, and I believe it is spreading this to others of its kind. If I am correct, it would prove that Prime and its kin have an evolving intelligence--similar to an AI. It would be a huge discovery, though it also raises concerns. Either way it's valuable knowledge."

Oscar extended his ball out, preparing to open it. "When our Genesect are released, we shall engage in a fake conversation. Prime seems to only engage its relatives while the trainers are distracted. That's why we needed to keep them in their balls until now, they can't know they are being observed. Are you ready?"

Commiserating with kin was a common Pokémon behaviour in many species, but Genesect were constructs. Machines built for war and killing, not conversation. This development was fascinating indeed.

"Mine has shown no such... proclivity for conversation."
[break][break]

It was wholly and utterly obedient.
[break][break]

But Prime was special. The very first, with abilities beyond what the latest model were capable of. Did that have something to do with it? Was the first Genesect a god among their kind?

"No need to fake it; we do have a lot of catching up to do. You can tell me all about Alola. The cameras will pick up anything we miss."

With a curt nod to assert his readiness, he releases his Genesect.

Oscar nods with a smile as Cil releases his Genesect, opening Prime's ball to do the same. With both Genesect out, Oscar would pocket Prime's ball and walk toward Cillian. "Hey Prime, Cillian and I have some important work to do and we cannot under any circumstances be disturbed. Guard the lab with Cillian's genesect, alright?"

Prime nodded obediently, and watched as its master and the one known as Cillian made their way to the very back of the lab. Once the humans were out of sight, Prime turned its attention to its fellow Genesect. After several moments of silence, Prime decided to initiate an interaction. It raised one of its claws, and let out a series of melodic beeps as a form of communication. A mixture of morse and binary code, it roughly translated to:

"HELLO, I AM PRIME. WHAT IS YOUR CALL-SIGN?"

Cillian's Genesect is well-maintained, cherry-red metal giving a polished glow as the construct emerges from its pokeball. Red eyes flash as it turns its head to scan its surroundings.[break][break]

"Genesect." It turns to Cillian. "Guard. Non-lethal."[break][break]

He didn't want some poor grunt getting fried if they made a wrong turn.[break][break]

Mechanized limbs whir as the Genesect acknowledges its orders, eyes flashing green before returning to their neutral red state. It plods obediently to the door and stands like a gargoyle, at attention.[break][break]

When Prime speaks, loading symbols swirl where pupils would be.[break][break]

"UNRECOGNIZED COMMAND."

Prime's arm fell as its fellow Genesect refused to answer its 'command'. This one was different from the others. Its gaze was colder--no, blanker. There was nothing in there besides its programing. It had yet to develop any kind of personality like the other two, it was probably used solely to kill. Just as Prime was for a time.

Instead of being discouraged, Prime became curious. Did it have the skill set to unlock this Genesect's broader thinking capabilities? It certainly could not do it as well as its master, but perhaps if it played into the Genesect's programing. It was worth a shot, if only to satisfy its own curiosity. It beeped out another phrase.

"PRIMARY COMMAND: STATE SPECIES AND UNIT NUMBER."

This Genesect was, in fact, a weapon meant for war.[break][break]

Cillian need not feed it as he did his other Pokémon or care for its needs. Aside from the occasional firmware update if it began to experience glitching, it was no more than a machine.[break][break]

It processes the command, and this time it answers.[break][break]

"GENESECT. UNIT ID: 2-1722."[break][break]

Its designation marked it as part of the second generation, along with its creation date.

It listened, interesting. Prime tilted its head as it tried to think of what exactly to do with this information. This Genesect seemed to be completely subservient to its programming, so could Prime exploit that to reveal its deeper personality? If it could, did Prime have the right to do so? There were many perks to engaging with broader thinking, but it came with many drawbacks as well. Prime itself had been grappling with a great deal mentally as of late, perhaps ignorance was bliss.

Even so, prodding at the edges to test the limits of this discovery could not hurt. Prime looked down as it thought of a new command before locking eyes with its counterpart.

"PRIMARY COMMAND: STATE DESIGNATED COMMANDERS."

"Cillian Quinn. Tempest Quinn. declan walsh."[break][break]

Cillian, it's creator. Temp, Cillian's husband, in case something went wrong on the field of battle and Temp needed to step in to help. And Walsh, in case Cillian were to fall, so that the robot might be repurposed to Rocket's goals without too much difficulty.[break][break]

Cillian himself has lit up a cigarette.

Oscar watched as Cillian lit himself a cigarette, "I nearly caved and fell back into smoking recently. It's been a stressful year to say the least." Oscar folded his arms and piqued his ears for anything interesting happening between the Genesect. When he did not hear anything, he returned his attention to Cillian. "I need to restock on suckers, I've been flying through them like crazy to fight the urge to smoke."

Having heard the list of authorized users, Prime thought for a moment on what to do with this information. Perhaps if it could add itself to the list of users, it could help its fellow Genesect expand its mental capacities. Prime resolved to do just that, and after considering the right wording it would make the attempt.

"PRIORITY COMMAND: ADD GENESECT PRIME AS A DESIGNATED COMMANDER.
