he doesn't hate the game.

you can't have any good reason to hate a game. it's all binaries and strings of code that shape structure and mechanics, which either work or they don't.

he can be mad about bugs.

he can't be mad about if those bugs have all been tested out and it comes down to human error and execution, which does mean he can and does hate the losers playing it. crunch, and rainy's already rifling through a crinkling bag to find another chip to replace the last one.

crrrrunch! and he's swiping oily fingertips across a keyboard as he watches his character cross the screen to defend one of the towers in a lane that'd been left open by one of his other teammates.

"hey, sure, leave it to the healer to fuckin' have to defend towers." he didn't even have good skills for this. all the items that he'd grabbed from the jump were basically useless with a stupid jungler. he'd spent the better part of the match trying to resuscitate an idiot that didn't know how to friggin' dodge a clearly mapped attack and then half of the other team was made up of fucking bots but he couldn't punt these jackasses out of his own team without—wait. where's the top lane going?

he sprints across the map, hastily typing out a message as he maneuvers his character to kite around theirs.

"ARE YOU THROWING?"

Bugs didn't bother him either. To Mark, these were doorways or opportunities to access the internal database, allowing him to do virtually anything he ever wanted. He wasn't here to play games against human opponents; no, he was beyond that. If they couldn't stand a chance, that was on them for knowing less than he did. A few stutters earlier in the game acted as the perfect guise for his Rotom to inject a file and initiate a script.

Before he could fully exert his newly-implemented powers, he was immediately harassed by the support from bot lane.

"Who is this guy, M?" he questioned the levitating normal-type beside him. The porygon-z's head suddenly jolted to an angle, viewing the monitor with its head bouncing slightly like a bobblehead. Without any further commands, the bird-like pokemon dove into the computer, reverting into streams of programming data. At an intense speed, the creature skimmed the world wide web as if it were an international system of pipes. Through its travels, it pinged multiple servers, attempting to pull any data it could find about the support orbiting its trainer.

"Stay in your lane."

he’s gonna be honest.

rainy didn’t actually think he’d get an answer. part of him had been hoping, if it was an actual player, to hear something reportable. the other part had just been hoping he wouldn’t have said anything at all so that he could just call the whole game a wash and say no one on his team was actually real players so the loss wouldn’t count against him. the back of his neck warms with an unspoken irritation then as rainy leans in close to his screen, fingers flying across the keys as he answers back: “ADCS NEED TO BE BABYSAT”

“OURS IS AN IDIOT.”

“ILL GET OFF UR DICK ABOUT IT WHEN” something pings in the side of their headset and rainy gives a passing glance at the side of their screen, message stalling as they watch the tiniest animation of a voltorb plays out on their overlay. a quick parse of his messages doesn’t suggest that he has any new assignments. but, it also doesn’t say where—

distantly, a magnezone blares sirens as it blinks red and blue beneath the game window.

fuck, he'd have to take this.

“someone’s getting noooosy, hm hm!” now, where was his—a few hasty clicks and rainy changes hands for his vpn, watching cautiously to make sure that the game didn’t outright end as he did. another quick fixes and a handful of scripts run and the alert abates, allowing rainy to return to berating in text. a cheerful HELLO WORLD animation, shoddily rendered in office software, plays on-loop in his backend. “YOU CLEAR YOUR LANE :)”

The sudden expulsion of the porygon-z from one of the many monitors scattered around the room confirmed it. The digital pokemon's glitchy form was hurled into the apartment wall, twisting and turning in a chaotic dance as it snapped to. A simple "HELLO WORLD" animation barred the normal-type from acting any further, but this didn't mean Mark was left without intel. This gesture was proof enough; there was another hacker in the game, and Mark didn't need their name to have fun with this information.

"Now," he commanded, eyes narrowing as he addressed the Rotom hovering beside him.

Once more, the game stuttered, robbing every player of their precious framerate and latency. A flurry of characters flooded the chat window, only to vanish quickly, hidden by the lack of frames the game could generate. Mark's hack extended beyond his own client and infiltrated the game's server. Within seconds, the top lane was cleared, followed by every other lane being wiped clean of minions. To those with an unaffected client, it appeared as if Mark's champion possessed infinite range, clearing every lane with a sudden, impossible barrage of basic attacks.

The message continues to repeat endlessly in the chat window.

it wasn't a fuckin' invitation.

but, figures. everyone that knows their way around a little bit of code always thinks they know what's up. like, congratulations? you know how to run a bot? sure, most people who were desperate enough to buy concert tickets for some so-and-so pop star could with enough determination. it's just how they can get their kicks.

can't get enough attention in real life, so the next best thing is to pretend that you're an actual flight risk by playing around in someone's stuff. their operating system too if you were really so tempted.

everyone's a badass until you talk about their internet search history, tbh.

rainy rolls his eyes when his chat window becomes inundated with "friendly" advice on the other player's part and watches idly as enemies are decimated one after another while this player's character doesn't move from his line of sight. must've been the guy nosing then around through his. had to be. wasn't like most other players had the sense they were born with. for a second, his character idles on the screen as he taps his fingers on the keys. either he had things set up already, which.

would've been insane.

or.

pokemon, maybe? could've been one of those porygons or a rotom. those moved through that space pretty easily. he rattles off another message, though it gets pushed up pretty quickly in the game client. "trying to prove something, handsome?"

"embarrassing for you tbh lmao ur gonna get reported immediatelyyyyy"
