This was the mark of an expert, Eddie realized with horror, when he found the oppressive weight of GRAVITY's hold was keeping him rooted in place. [break][break]

The Dusknoir's FIRE PUNCH should have connected, but even under their cosmic strain, Achilles leapt forward to intercept the strike with a DRAGON CLAW. The two Pokemon clashed as Eddie finally wrenched himself a step back, leering at the blonde who had descended upon him, [break][break]

“The hell's your problem?!” Eddie barked with sharp indignation. The Toedscool at his side SCREECHed angrily in a miniature mirror of his trainer.

Even Eddie could feel the PRESSURE of the specter as it lunged at his leonine friend. Achilles hissed with displeasure at the BRICK BREAK that cracked against his jagged crest. As the sun beat down, firey and oppressive, that crest of yellow and red became swathed in flame as a BURNING BULWARK, ready to shield against the Dusknoir's next strike. [break][break]

Meanwhile, Eddie continued to struggle, glaring at the stranger addressing him and silently pleading with his limbs to just fucking work. He scowled, [break][break]

“The hell do you care?” [break][break]

This was probably some sort of attempt at psychological warfare, Eddie reasoned, because Rocket had never been known to fight fair. Still, some stubborn bit of pride assured him that his resolve was strong enough to stand against even the most nefarious tactics of the criminal organization. Eddie's scowl turned into a ghost of a smirk, [break][break]

“I'm tryin' ta keep people safe from folks like you.” [break][break]

Achilles roared in bellicose challenge. Eddie knew they could not fall; perhaps he could take a moment to indulge his own morbid curiosity, [break][break]

“What about you, huh? Does pullin' shit like this land you a fat stack'a cash, or do you just like feelin' like a big man?”

months ago, the underboss would've taken their answer and spun it into an intricate web all in the hopes of catching them in their hypocrisy. now, he can't seem to care enough.[break][break]

it's easier to lean into the violence, though not one par tof him craves it.[break][break]

BRICK BREAK crashes into BURNING BULWARK, the resulting impact hot enough to leave dusknoir with scathing burns. in return, its eye glows in a PSYCHIC that attempts to pull the gouging fire's head back high enough for the BRICK BRICK to connect clean against its jaw.[break][break]

the underboss advances.[break][break]

"when you have goals as daring as ours, you must be willing to pay the costs along the way. this, the fighting, is merely one of them."[break][break]

and it is a cost the underboss has no issues paying.[break][break]

The Toedscool's eyes darted from the approaching man to his Dusknoir and back again. Eddie's gaze stayed trained on the advancing figure, hands balled into fists at his sides, [break][break]

“Yeah, I'd say a hostile takeover of Hoenn is real fuckin' daring.” [break][break]

Achilles hissed angrily, fighting with every fiber of his being against the ghost's PSYCHIC hold. Eddie too fought against that last bit of GRAVITY that weighed down his limbs, until he finally wrenched himself forward into a fighting stance, [break][break]

“But I'm willin' to pay the cost to stop you, by kickin' your ass!” [break][break]

In his few brief months in Hoenn, Eddie had learned that sometimes all you needed was a little bravado to seal the deal. He lunged forward, fists raised, finally free to do his part of the fighting. Achilles roared as the Dusknoir reeled back for its BRICK BREAK until the little Toedscool finally decided to take his stand, too. With a much less ferocious squeak, Dinkle loosed a fiery INCINERATE at the Dusknoir, hoping to at least distract the specter long enough to let his brother-in-arms go.

gravity seems to lessen as the man assumes their fighting stance, though the underboss does not mirror in kind. instead, theo taps a pokeball on his belt, his sygna suit activating the moment his milotic materializes.[break][break]

incinerated, dusknoir bellows in pain as it relents its hold over the gouging fire, brick break never connecting. angered, it vomits a shadow ball at the toedscool instead, quick to shift targets.[break][break]

despite the drought above them, water begins to collect at their feet, a hot surf imminent.[break][break]

The Toedscool was not particularly well-equipped to deal with the SHADOW BALL being flung his way, so with another, more indignant squeak, the attack sent him hurtling away with incredible force. The little octopi's body bounced once off the hard ground, skidding and sliding across the dirt, until he finally landed face-down in a patch of grass nearby. The only indication that he had survived the assault was the muffled murmur of pain he loosed once his ordeal had finally concluded. [break][break]

The Gouging Fire, on the other hand, was now released from the Dusknoir's hold and would not squander the opportunity its new freedom afforded it. The paradox Pokemon leapt back, aiming to create space for a counter-attack, and landed at his trainer's side with a snarl. [break][break]

But for all of his Pokemon's valiant efforts, Eddie found himself hesitating before he could strike his Rocket opponent. He watched with trepidation as the man's Sygna Suit activated and the serpentine Milotic appeared at his side, [break][break]

“Fuck you,” Eddie spat angrily, but the water pooling at his feet gave him pause. [break][break]

He was outmatched here, that much was obvious. A defiant part of him screamed that he could still do this, still put up some resistance no matter the insurmountable odds. He had helped take down the massive Dynamaxed trio on the Megalopolan spaceship, right? Surely there was something he could still do. [break][break]

But then Eddie's eyes darted over to the Toedscool struggling to rise to his feet some distance away, and some of that bellicose resistance evaporated. No, he couldn't jeopardize the lives of his friends in some losing battle just because he ego demanded it. He grimaced and recalled the Toedscool to his Poke Ball before glowering again at the stranger, [break][break]

“You're gonna regret this.” [break][break]

Or maybe he wouldn't, if Eddie didn't make it out of here in one piece. Achilles hissed, similarly understanding the gravity of the situation, as he and his trainer steadily backed away. In the end, though, Eddie didn't really trust the Rocket to let them slip away without a fight, so before turning to run, he issued one more command to his Gouging Fire, [break][break]

“Achilles, give us some cover!” [break][break]

A DRACO METEOR descended, fuchsia comets falling from on high with one last challenging roar from the dragon that summoned them. With that, Eddie and his Pokemon moved to make their escape, hoping that the attack would serve as enough of a distraction in case their assailant chose to pursue them.

there is no endgame here other than death; that is what the situation calls for and it is what the underboss continues to will into existence; but as the man turns with their tail tucked between their legs, prepared to flee, hesitation rises.[break][break]

this is not kanto, as he has been so avidly reminded, but that doesn't mean kanto has no place here.[break][break]

his words stop the formation of a shield of protect—"don't." because there's no need to go on the defensive, not when they have their enemy cornered and fleeing.[break][break]

as gouging fire's draco meteors rain down around them, the surf sweeps across like a tidel wave ready to drown. dusknoir, exposed in the open, stands its ground when it hears a click. its singular eye hums red as it summons an earthquake, intending to swallow them whole.[break][break]

He hadn't expected some Rocket scumbag to let him go so easily, but Eddie also hadn't been prepared for the ground to quake beneath him. [break][break]

He yelped in surprise as he started to lose his footing, all too soon as the first waves of the boiling SURF began to lap at his ankles. The next wave threatened to drown him entirely, but the shaking earth beneath him gave him precious little chance to recover his balance and continue his escape. Oh God, was he going to die here? After he'd only barely escaped death in the Giant Chasm a couple of months ago? [break][break]

There was a flash of honey-brown fur before him, and on instinct, Eddie clung to it like a lifeline. Achilles snarled, not in anger, but almost in warning, as the Gouging Fire suddenly bounded forward. [break][break]

The paradox Pokemon seemed unconcerned by the quaking ground or the scalding water lapping at his feet. He simply charged forward, gaining speed as sharp claws raked into the earth with every surging leap. It took all of Eddie's strength to keep his hold on the ancient creature, especially when another wave crashed all around them, [break][break]

“Thanks, big guy,” he murmured through gritted teeth, fighting against the strain of his muscles as they rapidly gained distance in their flight from the scene. [break][break]

Achilles just hissed, and Eddie could have sworn that he watched the leonine dragon's line of sight briefly flick back to glower at the blonde and his Pokemon left in the sweltering heat. There was some wounded pride there at being bested by a stronger foe, but there was resolve there, too. [break][break]

They would flee today and live to fight a hundred more battles, Arceus willing. They would grow stronger, more resolute, more capable of handling a combatant such as this, and when they did, the ancient dragon would relish the taste of this contemptuous human's blood on his maw.

the sheer heat of the draco meteor is contrasted by the cool of the surf that should feel relieving instead of suffocating; ironic given how he has always found comfort in the water.[break][break]

as the underboss is consumed by a surf of his own making, he closes his eyes, relishing in the chaos of not being in control.[break][break]

it's a comforting feeling, that.[break][break]

but as gravity eventually subsides and the surf drains into nothingness, he finds himself right back where he started, chained to duty, pride, and fear.[break][break]
