Hours have passed since you first brought in the League official handcuffed across the table from you. [break][break]

From what you've been told, the man is privy to many of the League's confidential military plans. Locations of bases and weapons caches, names of prominent leadership, access to private communication networks - he knows more than his unassuming appearance lets on. [break][break]

It's up to the two of you to extract as much information as you can.

The man tried to play into his unassuming appearance and naturally dumb-looking resting face, but Ameena was not some foal Ponyta. She could not be fooled so easily. The playbook offered multiple routes for interrogation. Frankly, Ameena would have preferred to let a psychic at him and call it a day, but a human touch was necessary here. The higher-ups wanted the man to break by the hands of Rocket's agents. Perhaps, the man had personally wronged one of her bosses.[break][break]

She turned to Aqua and very quietly spoke. "I think we should try to persuade him to our side. Rocket offers more freedom, especially with the crackdowns happening on the League end. If he wants to be with us, his skills will be put to good use, and he might make an excellent spy." The intel he could get from the inside would be invaluable in the coming war. But Ameena didn't believe in making unilateral decisions.

It was a strange reason for Rocket to order Aqua, of all grunts, to be present for this kind of simulation. They had been through the entire handbook already, so why revisit now? They paired up with another woman who they hadn't met quite before. Some hushed murmurings of her efforts were known, though Aqua lacked the familiarity to know much about her personally. [break][break]

Hopefully she was a far better communicator than they were. [break][break]

Today, the simulation had selected them for an interrogation scenario, plucked fresh from the archives. A League official, two Rockets and a potential for a wealth of information to be gained from playing their cards right. Aqua turned back to Ameena and offered a silent nod of their head. Blue locks bounced from the front of her to the back while a hand went to fluff some of the hair across their bangs at Ameena's suggestion. To say that it was unexpected would be an understatement. [break][break]

"...?" [break][break]

Aqua pursed their lips together in thought. It could work, theoretically! Coming right out of the gate could ease some suspicions of the prisoner getting hurt. But this was an official and likely had a good idea of how things went. The soft hum of the light was all that replied with Ameena with as they let out a soft exhale. As much as they wanted to, remaining silent wasn't the ideal option, not like this. [break][break]

"I don't usually...talk, but our grade relies on this. Sorry if it's grating." [break][break]

Their voice was somewhat high pitched, maybe almost a little whiny in some areas. Aqua scowled at the sight of it and looked away at Ameena. The corner of the room was pretty interesting. Maybe a cool looking bug was there! [break][break]

"I'm not disagreeing with you. Offering him a position as a spy opens up opportunities that he wouldn't be able to get elsewhere. Benefits, a lot of potential leads and work, and maybe a couple of things the League won't offer him. You've got a good eye for recruits." [break][break]

Aqua smiled, though their eyes went back to the League official. [break][break]

"But doing so is going to be hard. We don't know anything about this man, his qualifications. Approaching that angle right out of the gate might make us look like we're up to something. I'll let you do the talking, for obvious reasons...But if we're going to recruit him, I'll be with you all the way." [break][break]

While you may feel somewhat exhausted from the hours spent here in this bleak room, the League official in front of you is visibly haggard and shaken up by his untimely kidnapping. He's terrified of what you might do but is putting on a brave face.[break][break]

Still, your actions give him pause. He was expecting something much more overtly aggressive from a Rocket operative. [break][break]

"...Why should I tell you anything?" He asks, hesitant, as he narrows his eyes at the two of you.

Aqua seemed unsure. That was OK. Interrogation was a learned skill. The nature of the work required one to practice, as studying and running hypotheticals would not get one very far. Ameena had the practice, and Aqua clearly didn't. [break][break]

Ameena shared some words with the operative, turning from her companion to focus on him, but he wasn't convinced. In fact, he seemed very unconvinced. Ameena had a lot of flaws, but doubling down on a losing strategy wasn't one of them. She didn't ask Aqua for her preference and instead loomed over the operative. He had no personal space whatsoever. [break][break]

Ameena drew the dagger from her waist. She appeared to inspect it front of him, waiting silently. She hoped, behind her, Aqua was doing their best to at least look intimidating.

Ameena took point with the interrogation as Aqua did their best to remain as intimidating as a sixteen year old with a penchant for vandalism and felonies could be. They remained silent with an annoyed scowl at the pair, watching the older of the pair begin to discuss recruiting him onto the side of Rocket. The discussions weren't starting out on the best foot, but perhaps things could circle around into being a little more productive if they had ceased bickering back and forth. [break][break]

Aqua's eyes latched onto the man in question as they leaned on the wall with their arms crossed. That was how people looked in torture sessions, weren't they? Normally one of his crew was responsible for that, though they were likely still serving their prison sentences. As the victim scolded Ameena on her lack of viable options for him to give up information for, Aqua wondered if they were alright. The last time they saw any of the group was when the police had thrown all of them in the back of a squad car. Maybe they had gotten out? [break][break]

They sighed and watched as negotiations seemed to reach a standstill. Ameena was clearly frustrated and the man wasn't entirely willing to be reasonable with demands. She flipped a knife out and stood over the man bound to the chair, the blade aimed steadily at his chest. Aqua didn't have any qualms about it. It had been what they had seen countless times. But they did wonder if the threatening tactic was actually going to pay off in the long term. [break][break]

Visibly startled by your threat, he takes a moment to think over your response, weighing the heavy burden of treason versus personal survival in his mind. The man's anxiety is obvious in the way he picks at his cuticles while he internally deliberates, causing them to bleed a stark red against the dull gray all around. [break][break]

You watch and wait, patiently or otherwise. [break][break]

Finally, he decides to go with, "I-I don't actually know anything useful, I swear..."

She turns to Aqua, her eyes spelling out, nice work. Then, the man stutters out an excuse. He really doesn't know anything, really, it's the truth...[break][break]

Unfortunate, if he's lying. Catastrophic, if he's not. He's in for a world of pain. Ameena has supervisors to impress, and Aqua has even more people to answer to as a newcomer. Ameena looks at them again, this time, with an incline of her head. Hit him, her head movement spells out. Hit him hard.

Ugh, this guy just said the worst possible thing one could say in any type of interrogation. Aqua couldn't even hide their genuine disbelief in freely admitting that. The pathetic state he was in was enough of a gut punch already. They exhaled and looked back to Ameena for her input of what she was going to do from here. Her gaze back to them was short and to the point. Something that Aqua didn't really take any pride in doing. Blue locks fell up and down once. Aqua walked out of the room and closed the door behind them. [break][break]

In the hallway was a table full of instruments and freshly cleaned "tools" who may or may not have been used exclusively to torture people here. They had never really been one to revel in the savage ways of Rocket. Leave that to the higher ups. Aqua opted for something punishing but not enough to kill, maim, disfigure, or anything, really. That wicked knife would be a bit too much, and they didn't even know what to do with that device with multiple handles and a drill bit did. Everything was over the top in the worst way. [break][break]

But something resting beside the table, ever so slightly out of view, caught their eye. [break][break]

Aqua came back in after ten seconds, wielding a metal baseball bat. They silently pushed the table out of the way with a soft kick, freeing their direction to the League official. Before he could even utter a word, there came a flash of light. [break][break]

THNK! [break][break]

The sound of metal colliding with flesh and bone. There was no cracking, not yet anyway. Aqua had swung a single time at their head. Their man groaned in response and looked up just in time to receive another blow to his right temple. Blood caked the end of the bat, though nothing more than a smeared droplet or so. The attack was paused for now while their victim reeled in pain.[break][break]

Another swing happened, then another, four in total. It hurt them to do something like this, but he was getting a far better deal out of it than what Ameena likely could have chosen. [break][break]

The bat came to be underneath the broken man's chin as Aqua raised it back to meet Ameena's gaze. They looked at her, as if to ask if she wanted more. [break][break]

A poker face was vital in an interrogation. Letting your true thoughts or reactions out was a dangerous precedent. Additionally, that reactivity implied weakness. It allowed the target to think they could learn from your reactions. It allowed the target to think they could move you in some way. It was, unequivocally, important to be as impassive as the room itself, to be an unbreakable and unclimbable wall for the target to beat their head against. [break][break]

But Ameena reacted.[break][break]

Her eyebrows skyrocketed at Aqua's first swing, second. They didn't seem happy about it, but they were not cringing, either. They brought the bat down again. [break][break]

The man spilled his guts once they stopped. [break][break]

He curled up afterwards, and Ameena tugged Aqua out of the room quickly. With the door shut behind them, she said, "I am truly impressed. I did not think you had it in you." The confession was not cruel, though it might be unwelcome. "We can report the good news."

Aqua was banking on the man spilling his guts about information that could help them. A confession, a promise to cooperate with them in whole, anything really. They really didn't want to continue this if they didn't have to. But the man did crack. They got what pieces of information they needed and Aqua sighed to themselves. After flopping to the ground in a pained mess, they were pulled along to outside the interrogation room by Ameena and set aside. The hands gripping the bat were white with how firm the grip was. But at her voice, they relaxed. [break][break]

"It's not the first time I had to do something like that." Aqua said, cringing at their voice. "I had a gang myself back home where we scrapped some. I wanted a confession so I held back. I've hurt people with something like that before, but they deserved it." [break][break]

They took a moment to use a free hand to move the locks of blue hair from their eyes and take a small breather to calm themselves once more. So they got heated and kind of lost themselves to hurting somebody, so what? Such was the life of being in this war. You're either the Wingull or you're the person the Wingull is flying over. Once Aqua was calm and collected again, they nodded. [break][break]

"You're a pretty stern interrogator. I would have hated to have had you trying to get me to talk when I was arrested." [break][break]

They walked off to turn in their report, though not before Aqua took the bat along with him. They had a feeling they might need it again if the war was going anywhere. [break][break]
