Yumi woke to a full-bodied contentness she hadn't felt in years. The aches of tender, well-used flesh brought back memories of the previous night, and a pleased smile touched her lips before it faded at the discovery that Nikkari was no longer in bed with her. [break][break]

The sound of movements in her kitchen suggested he hadn't gone far, though. [break][break]

Still, she poked her head out of her door to make sure Mei Liu—or, Arceus forbid, Hitoshi Inoue—wasn't home. When Yumi saw only Nikkari, the smirk returned. She sauntered over, pulling on her discarded clothing so she looked somewhat decent. Her askew hair and a smattering of hickeys, however, lingered as reminders of what he'd done to her. [break][break]

"Good morning," she said softly, drawing up to his side to peer at his work. The peaceful domesticity of the moment brought low her defenses, inviting a vulnerability she had only displayed once in front of him before, when she'd been sick. "I didn't expect you to stay." [break][break]

Then Yumi remembered the reason Nikkari had come to her door, and her indigo gaze slid sideways to regard him. "How's your arm?" [break][break]

Tenderly, she reached out to examine the bandage.

her fridge is healthily stocked. he doesn't know if she does the grocery shopping or if she makes her attendant do it (or perhaps it's her notably absent roommate), but the produce is fresh. the eggs, crumbled halloumi, and spinach are joined by evenly diced peppers in the egg mixture.

egg drips down the whisk and through the tool, he spies yumi.

snapshots of last night sweep through him in stills - his finger tucked under her teeth, chin against her collarbone, hands at either side of her hips; hours of tumbling and using and reaching and yearning. he turns away before his body can betray him and tucks the pie dish into the waiting oven.

she reaches out to touch the bandage. the shape of the laceration is a dark copper; no doubt their tussling had made it leak. he'd noticed it this morning, relieved he hadn't bled on her comforter.

"i'm fine," he promises warmly and adds, "i'll be on my way after breakfast is ready."

Nikkari's wound didn't look fine, but Yumi wasn't a medical expert, and she trusted he could take care of himself. So she returned his warmth in the form of a smile. [break][break]

"I'm not trying to kick you out," she said with a light laugh, turning to pull plates and utensils out of cupboards and drawers. "But you're a busy man, so I suspected you wouldn't want to linger, either." [break][break]

Did she want him to linger, though? It was a dangerous thought, one she cut off before it could blossom into dangerous fantasies. Nikkari was a business partner, and sleeping where one worked was a high-risk game, especially for a young woman such as herself. [break][break]

Yumi set the table in a thoughtful, almost meditative silence, then proceeded with her morning ritual of making a cup of tea. "You prefer coffee, don't you? Black?" she asked, glancing over her shoulder at Nikkari as she poured water into the electric kettle.

yumi drifts away and he marvels at the slender curve of her spine. he knows there are bruises on her hips, between her thighs, and he runs his tongue along his teeth, thinking get a hold of yourself when she laughs and promises she's not trying to kick him out.

he wants a shower. he wants to clear his head, to wipe this damn blood off of himself. he wants to change his bandages.

he wants to bend her over the table and have his way with her again.

"coffee's perfect, thank you," he says. he checks his watch, defaults to business. "i have a meeting in an hour. are we still on for wednesday? i should have the cost breakdowns for the repairs on the building ready by then."

The smooth transition to business talk brought Yumi out of her spell. A part of her felt relief, knowing that her relationship with Nikkari was unaffected by what had transpired between them. [break][break]

Still, that did not stop the pang of hurt from a perceived rejection. [break][break]

She brushed it aside. He'd taken what he'd wanted from her, just as she'd done to others in the past. How was it any different now? [break][break]

"Yes, Wednesday is still good," Yumi said, hoping her voice didn't project any of her emotions, grateful to turn her back on Nikkari as she prepared a pot of coffee and her tea. "I have a reservation at our usual lunch place." [break][break]

By the time they sat down for breakfast, with hot drinks and hot food in hand, she felt more in command of herself. And when she bade him farewell, she squashed the insistent desire to grab his hand and drag him back into her bedroom. [break][break]

Still, that did not stop her from daydreaming of him after he was gone.
