he decided to go alone this time. he tells himself that if he can do overtime, then he saves the time to travel back and forth to himself. besides, there will be no one to monitor him for the job if everyone's working at proper hours.

others would call it intel retrieval. kyle would call it treasure hunting.

OPERATION #1 - DEEP SALVAGE
Participants are tasked with exploring the submerged areas of Sea Mauville to salvage valuable resources and artifacts.

a flashlight shines on the ship's rusty, barnacle-crusted lower floors. some walls have corroded and parts of the floor were waterlogged. kyle would believe it if the entire thing fell if a fight occurs.

caution was observed.

a creak causes him to flash his light on the source of the sound, inadvertently blinding another person who was in a room with him.

Former Top Champion, dog fan, and coffee extraordinaire Kyle Lopez shined a light on a figure. A person at first glance, if a person was half a foot tall and shaped like an egg.

'toge?'

A Togepi looked up at Kyle and waddled up to him, before spreading its arms wide to protect the room in question from harm. Through a deeper understanding or emotional bridge, the egg quickly realized that Kyle Lopez was not the same as the intruders that haunted these deep halls.

A slacker, a degenerate, and a gamer, yes. Evil? No.

The Togepi tapped Kyle's foot and waddled off, leading him past piles of defeated Crawdaunts and other antagonistic Pokemon, each slain or toppled by Togepi's mighty hand.

Instead, he led the dog fan to a large locker wrapped in chains and cuffed with a padlock. Several Magikarp flopped around in the water, which Togepi punted away. The locker quickly began to rattle.

"IS ANYONE THERE? HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

there was tempatation to catch all the defeated crawdaunt and sell them to grade schoolers at a local school, but he held the thought of it off. he can't lose sight of the togepi after all.

the togepi is followed, and has led him to what some people would call a treasure.

it would be mostly parents and close friends that would say that, which kyle is not, but it was a good interpretation of the old adage: one man's trash is another man's treasure.

yelling and banging from the locker caused him to stare for a moment. ideas to mess with the person inside came up, but most of it was discarded.

"are you, like... what's the deal with you?" kyle asks.

honesty was the chosen form of interaction. he starts to look from one corridor to another afterwards, wary of his surroundings. if this was any other place, he could think it was a prank, but on an abandoned research station by the sea...

"i would let you out, but i don't want to deal with the mafia, you feel me?"

The locker's shaking ceased for a moment, granting Kyle a rare moment of peace and quiet not felt since he had been atomized and sent to the Hoennian equivalent of hell. Inside, the prisoner was clearly shocked at Kyle's abrasiveness.

What a cruel and heartless man, he was.

"I'm not with the mob! Do I look like a member of Team Rocket?" The locker continued to shake and shift as the man within attempted to escape. The man within began to hyperventilate. "I got teleported into here!"

"toge toge?" Togepi waggled a finger, before nudging Kyle's foot and pointing at the locker, which began to shake even more intensely. Togepi's eyes grew wide as he pleaded with Kyle. "toge!"

"Is that Togepi!? That little bastard!" The locker was practically hopping up and down. "He teleported me in here! Don't trust him, stranger!"

if a random nerd from a random museum can be a rocket admin, then a random nerd getting shoved inside a random locker could be as well. kyle didn't voice it out since he is a saint sent from above and wouldn't think of doing such heinous action.

while he can't decipher the togepi's actions, he shares a look with it before deciding to help althus out. the sudden warning causes him to stop, however.

"it's, uh, telling me to let you out, i think." kyle takes his hands out of the barricade of the locker's door. "should i not do it then?"

to trust the togepi means to do what it wants it to do, but if the person inside the locker tells him not to, then the paradox of the logic produces a conflicting idea.

"is this togepi yours to begin with?" he asks. "it doesn't look like a wild pokemon."

The locker froze for a moment as Rex contemplated this revelation.

"You gotta let me out, even if Togepi wants it! The ship is sinking and there's no way in hell I'm going down with it!" The man in the locker peers through small vents, seeing only the obscured face of the former Top Champion and part-time dog trainer. "Please don't make me beg!"

As if on command, the Togepi began to waggle his fingers with fervor, producing a bright light that threatened to erupt into a Hyper Beam if not properly maintained.

"It's my Togepi, I swear!"

The light grew in intensity, blinding Rex through the small slits in the locker. He let out a shriek of fear and pain as Togepi prepared to fire a mighty strike.

"PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE...!"

it would be cute if he did beg, kyle ponders.

he looks around for any tools to help him free. kyle wasn't exactly a person of large stature and bulging muscles powerful enough to rip chains and locks with his own grip.

the nearby cabinet containing a fire hose for the facility's mandatory fire safety obligations also housed a fire axe. coincidentally, it's placed near the lockers. a quick boot to the glass, and kyle grabs the weapon from the box.

one swing is all it takes to dismantle the bindings. the door flies open from althus' constant banging, causing him to drop on the floor just in time. he finds himself gripping the axe comfortably in his hands.

"do you not have, uh, other pokemon?"

he peers back to the corridor they just passed.

"i think you can get one of those crawdaunts or something since it's free."

As soon as the door comes flying off, Rex lunged to the ground with remarkable efficiency. Togepi blasted through several walls with a Hyper Beam, causing the young man's hair to singe slightly as he hit the floor. As he rose, he stuffed Togepi into a Pokeball.

"Thanks, stranger." Rex panted, taking the Pokeball and clipping it to his belt. There were other Pokémon at the young man's belt, but he sheepishly scratched his head. "They're all kind of... fainted?"

Looking after the (former) Top Champion, Rex peered at the piles upon piles of Crawdaunt. His nose wrinkled in response to Kyle's request, as if the man had asked him to jump into a trash pit.

"No." He looked the Top Champion up and down, before pursing his lips in confusion. This guy seemed familiar, and yet...

No. Something was amiss.

"Do I know you?"

he raises an eyebrow at the question.

"uh, probably not?" he answers in confusions. "i think this is the first time we met, sorry."

he couldn't blame him though. his features were really generic that even white streaks in his hair can be considered normal within hoenn. besides, everyone else looked like main characters of their own stories, including this guy.

kyle lets althus pick himself up.

"we should head back though if you're really out of pokemon. do you want a ride?"

he starts walking out of the room where the fainted wild pokemon were, deeming it a safe route that the togepi has provided.

"oh, yeah, just call me kyle," he introduces.

"Kyle?" Rex blinked slowly, lips pursing. That name did sound familiar, in a cosmic sort of way. For a guy with cool white hair, Kyle was a fairly normal name. His parents must have really hated their son to name him something like that. "Alright."

Without much question, Rex followed the mysterious stranger past the disheveled heaps of wild Pokémon that Togepi had stacked to the heavens in his fit of rage.

Truly, the egg Pokémon was a ferocious threat indeed that would grow to defeat many Mightyena.

"I'd appreciate it, thanks." A moment of silence. "My name's Rex. I'm gonna be Hoenn's champion, one day."

Another pause. The words almost sounded ridiculous as they left the young man's lips, but he didn't particularly care. If the man wanted to laugh, he could.

"What're you gonna do when we get out of here? Help the rangers out?"

he raises an eyebrow at the question.

"that would be nice, no?" a smile and a shift of his head away from rex hides his expression. "i'm heading home right after this. this interaction hits the quota anyways."

arms stretch as if he had done hard work. all he had done for today was enter the facility and follow a togepi. besides the excuse, he also earns himself a fire axe of seemingly decent condition.

the report will consist of an exaggerated retelling of the events, which rex would probably compound on given his energetic nature. it was always expected on those people who proclaim their outlandish dreams to people who didn't ask.

"good luck at being the champion though," he says. "guys like me need competent people in society."

fighting in the front lines and risking his life? can't be him.
