Half of what he said was exactly for the intent of endearing the other. It wasn't like he knew if the guy had any actual talent and it was better off a grand old mystery. Although... he was somewhat curious. Clearly the other had been painting, given the amount of paint on his face and clothes. "There's only one way for me to be sure though."

Rook blinked, a little confused. "The opposite? How so?" It wasn't a stupid question. He probably should want to run away. It wouldn't be the first time, dealing with police, but this seemed worth it this time. There wasn't much he wouldn't do for a pretty face.

Rook grinned at that, "Romantic, no? Isn't there something attractive about a mystery?" He was far from mysterious, especially once he got talking. It was a wonder that he hadn't blabbed his whole life story yet. Maybe the sappy details would score him some points.

"Conning you? I would never, you have my word." He didn't even know his name.

“How’s that?” In the chaos, he’d forgotten his own disheveled state, or the fact that he was all paint-flecked. Really, it was sort of just his state of being. It was more uncommon for him to be paint-free. He didn’t really stop to consider that this random person (thief) would actually want to see what he’d been working on.[break][break]
It wasn’t anything extraordinary, anyway.[break][break]
“Well, usually when people get caught in the act of something illegal, they don’t really want to stick around for the consequences. Or chat up the person who caught them.”[break][break]
Lam didn’t understand him, in any case. He was strange. But equally as strange was the curiosity that attached itself to him. Why should he want to know anything about this intruder? He didn’t want to admit that there was a bit of veracity to his claim about mystery. “So you want me to be attracted? Interested?”
He still wasn’t sold that it wasn’t just to pull the wool over his eyes. Weirdly, he was forced to recognize that it was somehow working.[break][break]
“Special..?” His heart thumped, uneven and quick, “What’s so special about me?” He hardly thought he stood out in any way. Not like this guy, who seemed like the sort of person that drew in brightness and reflected it back like a natural spotlight.[break][break]
Lam processed the question slowly, head tilting. “Huh? Oh—“ heat bloomed in his face again and he scrambled back. “No, just…don’t try to run off. Poppy will take you out.” From a light fixture, the pidove twittered.[break][break]
Not as menacing as she thought she sounded.[break][break]
But from the way he was talking, it didn’t seem like he was really keen to go anywhere. “Who are you, anyway?” Lam had never met anyone like him.

"Show it to me." He stated, smiling. Still very much limp and laying on the ground without making any effort to escape, 100% satisfied to continue laying beneath this pretty boy so long as it wasn't weird. Maybe even if it was weird.

"What can I say? I'm a unique catch and you should definitely keep that in mind." He winked, very much not at all the caught criminal. Maybe it was a little manipulative, maybe gaslighty. It wasn't like he was actively pretending to be anything else for the hope of escape. It was his hope that he would escape, but maybe with a phone number in his pocket or something.

Rook paused at that, "Are you not? Because if not then I could see how this might be a little awkward." Wouldn't that be a damn shame? He was hopeful that the response was interest and the blushes were reaction, but he couldn't be sure. It wasn't like he did this a whole lot. Contrary to misconception.

"Circumstance? Good looks? Charm? A nice smile? Whose to say?" A little, crooked smile followed.

Rook pouted at the other scrambled away, clearly scared off. He'd pushed too hard, too much teasing. What a shame.

He blinked, “Oh, uh. You want to see my stuff?” All too quickly he was wracked with sheepishness. His gaze darted toward the doorway again. “You really aren’t trying to get away? You actually want to see it?”[break][break]
Whoever this was, he was unique. Lam would give him that. His heart fluttered in his chest. Confusion mixed with a pathetic sort of hopefulness over the idea that he genuinely wanted to look at Lam’s hard work, and maybe not hate it or write it off. Maybe it was bad to not feel the sense of threat that he had when he’d first stumbled upon the intruder, but he didn’t.[break][break]
“I mean, no. I mean, yes? Er, it’s…I’m confused. You’re interesting, I’ll say that much.” His face remained reddened as he fumbled over his words. He wasn’t sure why he should be so flustered now. The immediate threat of theft was gone, but the situation remained strange and unexpected.[break][break]
It was confusing to abruptly feel a strange sense of ease around this literal stranger, while also being dubious. It was weird to want to know more. His smile was disarming in a way Lam wasn’t accustomed to experiencing.[break][break]
Rolling to his knees, he pushed himself up and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn’t really see what was so charming about himself. He felt pretty awkward just then, actually.[break][break]
Lam looked down at him, expression flatting. “Yes, obviously.” He reached down, offering a hand. “That’s not what I meant. I didn’t ask what you are, I asked who you are.”

"Yeah, why not?" He shrugged, as if it was the simplest request in the world. Then again, he wasn't an artist. He had no idea how it felt to create something that wasn't stolen. Rook was a fraud in every sense of the word. Not that he'd say that, it wouldn't look good on his game. "Nope, I wont run away."

“I guess when you put it that way..” Lam shrugged, “Just dunno why you’d be interested.” He regarded the other, sprawled on the floor, suddenly wary. “You’re not gonna try and steal it, are you?” Not that he thought it was really worth anything. It made Lam feel exposed, sharing something like this.[break][break]
“Sure you won’t..” His brow rose as he looked at the other skeptically. He certainly didn’t look like he was about to start blushing. “Seems like you enjoy causing it more than doing it yourself.” Still, Lam pulled him up, hesitating a beat too long before letting go of his hand.[break][break]
Lam’s own glance traveled to the mimikyu and the way her head hung limply to one side. “Is she okay?” Poppy had fluttered down from her perch, settling herself in the nest of Lam’s hair instead. Beady amber eyes narrowed at Rook.[break][break]
He blinked as the question was turned back on him. “…Lam? Wait-“ Once again, he’d answered automatically without thought behind it. What was it about this guy that made him so…dumb?? Charming smile and good looks aside.[break][break]
He sighed.[break][break]
“Look—I won’t call the cops on you, if you’re not lying. I don’t really want to deal with all the shit that comes with it. Not tonight.” It was late, and the procedure was tedious. Nevermind that he didn’t want to have to tell his boss what had happened. “Deal?”

“Well why not? I’m clearly an art connoisseur.” That was one way of putting his career. It certainly wasn’t a helpful answer. It wasn’t like he had any kind of belief that hottymcthotty artist here was good simply because he was hot. Then again, wouldn’t it be nice to get the best of both worlds? Good looks and talent? Rook might have been a tad bit jealous if that was the case. As much as he liked to boast and talk big, he wasn’t exactly the most… talented.

Lam frowned, squinting at him. “Are you really..? Somehow I doubt that.” Or, well, maybe he was. He probably needed an eye for it in order to steal the good stuff in the first place– wait, no. Why was he trying to find a way to explain away this guy’s obviously criminal occupation? Was he that desperate to have someone actually look at his work and tell him he was good? (Someone who wasn’t his dad, thanks.) Sadly…yeah, he sort of was. He craved that validation, and it was probably obvious.[break][break]
And because of that, he was being clowned on. He was turning himself into a total, walking meme for this guy, who was probably just waiting for the right moment to stroll away. And Lam was completely handing that opportunity over to him for a crumb of praise.[break][break]
Plus, maybe…he wasn’t sure. People didn’t really flirt with him often. As flustered as he’d grown, that was its own sort of nice attention too. As soon as the thought crossed his mind, Lam scolded himself for it. This wasn’t the sort of trouble he should’ve been asking for. “Well, yeah. Because–huh? No, I’m not implying anything!” he replied, much too fast as his face stubbornly retained warmth.[break][break]
His stomach twisted with nerves hearing the other mull over his name, like he was trying it on for size. Lam chewed on his lip, green eyes darting away. “I mean, it’s not that hard to spell. But people do think it’s Sam a lot.” He paused, “Okay, but you didn’t answer me. Who are you?” How had he already forgotten?[break][break]
Dumbly, he nodded. The guy would know his own pokemon best, after all. “Right, if you say so.” His fingers curled around the other guy’s and he hoisted him back up to his feet. Pretty boy, he felt like he was drowning in oppressive heat. He tried to look anywhere, but at his face. Those eyes. “Cool, sounds good.”[break][break]
They were standing close. Probably too close. Belatedly, Lam realized he was still holding onto his hand. He abruptly let go with a stammered sorry. But had he imagined the electric feeling? Like a bunch of sparks kicking off the contact. He must’ve been. Jerking his head, he swiveled toward his space.[break][break]
“My stuff’s back here.” Maybe he was the one trying to run away now.

This was a two prong approach.

He was hoping that the artist would just let him go for giving him compliments. That didn't mean the compliments weren't genuine, they just weren't fully without motive, big difference. He meant what he said, the guy was pretty and he was enjoying his time being held captive. At least until the tables turned and he had to switch gears and show his cards.

Lam, it was an odd name, but he didn't say as much. His own wasn't exactly normal, by any means. He wasn't sure if it was intentional or simply bad spelling. He'd never liked it anyways, his father said his name in a way that left him unsettled and unhappy.

"I'm in disguise, I couldn't possibly give you my identity so easily. You could use that against me, after all." There was truth to that, but he was also somewhat full of shit and playing games.

Regardless of his answer, he wasn't going to leave before he caught a glimpse at the guy's art. That was only polite. Rook was not an artist in the traditional sense. Painting and drawing, big no. He preferred more theatrical artistry, like lying. He had no expectations except that he would say he liked it out of hopes that the guy would continue to take this entirely unseriously.

Only he was surprised to find that Lam was quite good.

"I was planning to bullshit you regardless, but I'm genuinely impressed. You're really good, much better than the trash I was going to steal." Not that he was planning to steal this now, the work of starving artists weren't valuable enough.
