Do Scientists Dream of Theoretical Sheep? [M]

Across the scene, timers rang out. Bells, chimes, whistles, physical screams of excitement, groans of relief. A symphony of controlled chaos, yet all for a common goal. Grigori himself kept calm and reserved, but he let his handful of nails clatter back into the box all the same.

Beneath the sapphire blue sky, the clock struck noon. For construction workers across Petalburg, the blessed time had arrived. Ordained by Arceus itself. One hour of relief, of food and deliciously cold water. Some flocked to work trucks, and others began to huddle around cheap fans and water gallon jugs.

The grunt, instead, opted to visit the remnants of Petalburg. Not all had been destroyed. Some infrastructure had come out relatively unscathed. They’d been fixed first, if only to offer some normalcy to the people who remained.

Across the street was one such place. A very limited selection of stores remained, but remained they did. Usually occupied by the overseers, foreman, and…

Sometimes, on rare occasions, the cream of the crop of Rocket. For one reason or another, they procured spots at these little stores. They watched progress for many reasons. Boredom, being told to, waiting for noon to pull away select grunts for other matters.

Good…” he glanced at his wristwatch. It now read twelve-o-one. “Afternoon, Dr. Ameena. What brings you to our productive worksite?

likely hoped it was to wait for her turn in the guillotine. He’d heard the groans and complaints about her ‘experiment’ plenty. To a nauseous degree. “Anything I can do to assist you?

He hoped the sweat that caked his simple t-shirt and jeans did not smell atrocious. It was only natural, underneath the hot sun and under such physically demanding conditions.

"Mr. Sokolov," she returns in kind. The scene holds endless hustle and bustle as everyone contributes to the rebuilding effort. There was a good spread of grunts and upper management, though she suspected the rebuilding effort was not going to be enough to comfort the Petalburg citizens who found themselves living under the iron fist of Rocket. Sootopolis had long acclimated, but this wound was fresh. [break][break]

Some more morale boosting efforts might be a worthwhile investment. She knew Rangers tended to donate aid and food for publicity by establishing support lines and tents in damaged cities. Mauville City had seen plenty right after the rampant toxic chain arrivals. The whole city reeked of Pecha.[break][break]

"It behooved me to visit and see the newest developments. I see we are focusing on restoring what was lost, first." She crossed her arms, but she nodded in approval. "Here to observe, but Alakazam can assist with some lifting and placing if that would benefit the site. I wanted to see things firsthand. So, really, how are things going?"[break][break]

She was no admin, requiring lofty words and overconfidence and overpromising. But word of mouth would distort the truth of the rebuild, so she knew it was best to ask a real authority on the topic. She had no idea what to expect for the timeline.

The offer of assistance is greatly appreciated, but it will have to wait until the lunch break is over,” Grigori explained. The current hustle and bustle was to escape the sun and rest in peace, rather than to proper fix things. but it was hard to see it any other way. “There is no work to be done right now.

As for a timeline…” Grigori glanced back at the worksite. He absently rubbed his chin and carefully assessed the progress. “I’ve only a wildcard guess, but if we’re lucky and things go smoothly, this row might be done within a month, perhaps two. Three if the architects change the blueprints. Again.

It had caused a great deal of stress the first time. A second time would end in mutiny, and riots. They might tear the whole thing down again.

For a more accurate assessment, I recommend a proper foreman,” he motioned to the side, where they also sat and watched. However, unlike Ameena, they wore the standard safety helmets and boots.

How about your efforts, Dr. Ameena?” He turned his attention back to the researcher, hands held behind his back. “After all, these are but physical matters. Cities will be destroyed and rebuilt, but your work will make permanent progress in our understanding of the world.

He had attempted to read some of her work, but Howard and his own lack of scientific knowledge made the endeavor a hard one.

She smiled at his visible frustration with architects. She could relate, with her dev team frequently finding themselves tangled up in meaningless details that they simply needed to iron out before getting to the meat of a project. She tired of dealing with anyone who knew a damn thing about computers. [break][break]

"The timeline for Sootoplis looks dreadful, so that is not so bad." She wasn't sure her comfort would help at all, but at least keeping busy was good for the mind. [break][break]

She was surprised about his interest in her work. Dream research was polarizing, and most did not care for it at all. "It is coming along. demonstrated a significant function of the interdream zone not too long ago. If we can develop that further, I think the war is as good as won." Not that the weaponizing of dreams held any interest to her whatsoever, but she accepted Rocket's patronage with the understanding that her work had better contribute to its political agenda. [break][break]

"The world is changing so fast that understanding it might be a fool's goal," she said sardonically. "But if I did not study dreams, I have no idea what science I would turn to." The closest relative would be psychology, which did not interest her. More applied work like interrogation or brainwashing might be a more effective use of her studies, but doing something with such an immediate dead-end for development left a sour taste in her mouth. "Given the opportunity, what would you study?"

That… was the first person he attempted to decipher the research of. After several long sessions in a Moped’s coffee lobby and two packs of highlighters, he’d given up. In his defense, it came off the back of the blood moon incident– hard times for the man. “Naturally, of course.”

And that no matter what happened, it’d be abused and manipulated to become a weapon against the League. That’d killed his interest as well.

The world is progressing fast, but it is a ritual we’ve engaged in for our entire existence,” Grigori offered. “At first, it was about how to grow crops better, how to construct structures for safety, then how to tame Pokémon. We are fools, but we are intelligent, capable fools.

At the question of his own interest, Grigori crossed his arms and stroked his chin. What a simple yet impossibly difficult question to answer. Not only had he never been a proper member of the scientific community, but he did not even hold a high school diploma under his belt. What did he know about the field?

If I had the chance, I’d do something with Pokémon– maybe their ecosystems, perhaps? I know not the proper term for the field,” he admitted. “Stay on my feet, active, get to be around the wildlife.

He looked more like a fool with every second spent on his interests. “But I do not. Such is the way my life has progressed. What of you, then? Surely there must be some defining event that lead you to choose the field of dreams as your sole focus. Enough to block other avenues of interest.

Yet hopefully her interest did not develop as ’s had. His own experience with her had been unnerving and recounts from Howard only further exemplified the visage.

Fools was one interpretation of humanity. She used to think worse labels suited them, but these days, she figured it wasn't about foolishness so much as it was about thoughtlessness. Time moved in a circle. People acted out of habit. Out of the expectations set on them. Even governing bodies set boundaries based on what they thought people expected them to do, she figured. They were assigned roles at birth that they all played. [break][break]

Breaking the multiverse by travelling to another reality through the dreamscape was an attempt to act out a different part in a similar play. [break][break]

"Ecology is interesting," she conceded. "I find the more interesting studies get tainted by human interaction, unfortunately." Territoriality amongst species and the co-mingling of them were fascinating behaviors, but she wanted to observe such phenomena more naturally. Who cared how urbanism tainted their behaviors? [break][break]

Her expression darkened at the question, but only for a moment. Dreams were a source of optimism for people, a manifestation of the heart's desires. seemed to think so, at least, and it wasn't an uncommon thought process. Grigori's question was off-putting for that reason. The assumption that something occurred to make her want to study it... and while it was true, she wouldn't vocalize it. "I think they offer an alternative to our reality." An answer more truthful than he deserved but likely vaguer than he preferred. [break][break]

Maybe he prodded because he had something to explore in that realm. "Do you have any dreams that might be of interest to me?"

Human interaction was a whole can of Orthworms on its own, as well as urban developments. How the wildlife reacted to the actions of humans could lead to an entire world of discovery. One that would not be spearheaded by Grigori, though. Perhaps, in another life. Or in a dream.

Funny how the world worked.

None to you, I’m afraid,” he sighed and closed his eyes. If he tried hard enough, he could bring himself back to those moments. That untainted second life. One where he could look himself in the mirror. “The entirety of my life’s trajectory changed. I was an entirely different person. I became a researcher, even. A professor.

Unshackled from my greatest mistake.

But that’s all it was, for better or worse,” he reopened his eyes, older and more tired. Since when did those worry lines get there? “A dream. There are much younger, higher-spirited minds with even greater potential than this old man. Explore their minds instead.

She did not need help in that department from him. It sounded like she’d explored plenty of mindscapes as was. Best not add another to the pile of ‘things to make right’.

Speaking of, and if you’re willing to share… what sort of dreams piques your interest? Surely there are some recurring patterns that you enjoy seeing. Perhaps even your own?

It was likely Ameena started her work from a personal interest. Even a glimmer of that own dream would be good enough for him. The spark of a flicker of flame.

He didn't seem to think too highly of himself. [break][break]

"Young minds have experienced less. I find that more seasoned subjects have more to offer, but fret not. I have no shortage of subjects, so your mind is yours alone." She smiled. Her real reasoning was more about not wanting to burn bridges with her colleagues, especially given the unintentional abduction for her last sleep study, but it didn't serve their conversation to dive into that. [break][break]

He had quite a few questions for her, which made her wonder if he did want to dabble in the sciences more. "You missed your calling as an interrogator," she stated with unveiled amusement. "The content of the dreams do not interest me. I leave that to psychology students and those obsessed with good vibes or manifestation or whatever kids these days are saying."[break][break]

She waved her hand dismissively. "I care more for possibilities of what the mind is accessing when it dreams. Some people look to ultra space or the megalopolans for opportunities to jump realities. I think our dreams access them. Much like how our imagination can feed tera crystals and make temporary realities, I believe we can find a way to enter the alternate realities our minds perceive." It was difficult to explain without getting into the full analogy of her theory, with a house and doors and all, but it was far-fetched regardless. She didn't tend to defend her research to anyone, these days. But there was an easy hook for outsiders to her research.[break][break]

"If you could enter an alternate reality at will, as different or as similar to this one as you desired, wouldn't you do it?"

Grigori did not share her view of the quip. “I was deemed too violent for it.

Even here, when he pretended to play construction worker, he could not escape his abhorrent life. Not that he deserved any less– but if they could not intermix, then it would just be peachy. Infest his nightmares and restless nights. Not the most sacred hour of his day.

Yes.

He answered hot off the tail of her question. “Such a thing, with limitless potential? Dreams are a place of comfort, and wonder? I suspect there are very few people who would answer any different.

Those who did either were ‘living the dream’ or were lying.

But… I am unsure if such a thing will ever be possible,” he said. The passion left his voice, and he once more returned to the conversation. “Furthermore, from what I understand, the threads of our universe are tenuous at best. I fear of what may happen if we push upon them even further…

Doomsdays, blights upon the vastness of Infinity. Arceus was long overdue to right the wrong that was their universe, if the DRK triad was to be believed. Perhaps dreams and fate were better left to the imagination than reality.

How far would you go to make your research fruitful? What is the price you’d pay?

Did Ameena run from something likewise?

"It will be possible." She cuts in quick, defensive. Then, after a pause: "If not in this world, then in another. But there are too many universes for impossible to exist." It's the biggest concession she'll ever make in relation to her work. If she cannot enter the dream realm and choose a new reality for herself, another Ameena will be able to. It's a bitter, sick thing... but ultimately, at her core, she's happy for the one who succeeds. [break][break]

She just won't stop trying to make that her own story. [break][break]

"I have no reason to believe my research will push the boundaries of our reality. It is more like... using an escape rope in a cave. It should not impact our reality except to remove someone from it and place them in another reality." The dream realm, she had no reason to believe, took up a physical space or at least a space in the physical plane as they could perceive it. Therefore, she didn't believe it impacted their reality beyond the metaphysical plane - and even then, she theorized it was more like opening a door than tearing a hole in the wall. [break][break]

His question, from anyone else or in the context of any other conversation, would lead her to believe he's questioning her loyalties or her willingness to burn Rocket for her own goals. She's confident that isn't the case here. "Nothing I have or will have in this reality is valuable. I lose all of it when I enter a new reality, so the sacrifice of it is nothing at all." She sighs, an exhale through her nose as her expression turns almost nostalgic. " is so competent, I think what remains of dream research after such a discovery will be in good hands. I suspect my absence in this world would not hinder it much at all... but what I find might lead to others following suit and escaping." If this reality was on the brink of ending, she could blame no one for taking a life boat.

Ah, how could he have forgotten such a vital, crucial, omnipotent fact?

The higher-ups of Rocket did not gain their seats solely through goodwill. It required a specific mindset even to catch a glimpse of its grandeur, its beauty. Sacrifices upon sacrifices. Things were given up, taken away, or smashed beneath the heel as you went to take your seat. Most of them, their conscious.

Others, their sanity. Which had Ameena stomped beneath her boot as she sat down in her chair at the table?

I take it that you define your entire worth here as your research? I’m not sure if I would define such a view of oneself as healthy,” Grigori said cautiously. Optimistically. He was not the kind to let the girl hang herself from the rope he dangled. “There is more to an existence than accomplishment.

Your friendships, bonds, even perhaps enemies– you’d be little more than a stranger, once people see past the facade,” he eyed her carefully. The second she looked offended or upset, he’d have to backpeddle. Otherwise he’d be crushed next.

And that’s only if you view it from a personal perspective. The world left behind will not be so quick to forget. Especially the people within.

He surprises her with his forward, open assertion. It pulls a bark of a laugh from her before she remembers herself. "What a damaging assumption," she teases, by the amusement heavy on her face betrays the chastising tone. She looks to the town, paused in its construction. "I am what I am what I am. Those relationships here will be relationships there, or there, or there," she says as she gestures to various points in space, representative of different realities. [break][break]

"All things are temporary except the mind. Your perception of reality is reality, hmm?" She sticks her hands in her pockets. "I seek one thing in an alternate reality. Everything else is the same, so it is not lost. So I have it elsewhere." Simple. His thought is kind and sentimental, but she doesn't see the purpose in it. "And if people here mourn my absence, it is nothing to me. I will already be in a similar reality, but a different one." [break][break]

It didn't make sense to care about what couldn't be changed. She would be gone. The people here, their emotions, it would no longer be her responsibility. "If I upset this Grigori," she says with a gesture to him, "it does not impact the Grigori in the next reality who is pleased to see me. Your current reality is the only reality. Your perception is all." Multiple realities did not play with each other - they were independent, separate entities that she desired to jump between. But the people and the world within each one stopped mattering once you abandoned it. Didn't he get it? Wasn't that the thesis of Rocket, at its core? Get yours, fuck everyone else?

Sociopaths were smarter to hide their detachment from people.

Grigori stomped down upon the thought. Swiftly, before it could escape and hide in the nooks and crannies of his mind. There were many reasons to think the way she did. Perhaps not all entirely valid. To presume labels was a mistake. An easy, but damning, mistake to make. Even with Ameena.

Even with the entirety of Rocket. Even if, sometimes, there was no other answer. “I… am unsure how to respond, Dr. Ameena.

I do not agree with your assessment of realities and universes, as tough of a concept it is to wrap my head around,” he said. “Nor the notion that the mind is forever. Has your mind not changed since you were a child, and the world was new? Many things unknown?

The mind had to change, lest it be stuck in its ignorant, oblivious ways. It was one of the key requirements to consider oneself grown. For it to be permanent was to defy the reality of reality.

As I see it, it is the context in which we exist that defines who we are,” he too motioned to the town being rebuilt. “No one exists in a vacuum. Who we are, how we act, and what we think, are all ultimately defined by connections made to the place in which we exist. Even if the definitions do not change between universes, the contexts in which they preside do.

Ultimately, you are right: current Mr. Grigori’s opinion on Dr. Ameena does not impact another universe– but it also means that your current self does not receive the gratefulness that the alternate Dr. Ameena receives. Even if you replaced her with yourself, it would only be a ruse. A lie.

The other Grigori would be upset to find the Ameena replaced, even if they were functionally the same. Because they ultimately weren’t.
