something up there must have thought it a good joke, to allow absinthe out in the sun on this rare occasion. the light is something good, something pure amongst the grime of slateport city—even something strengthening, as the rays of the sun seem to fill absinthe with a sort of pulsing vigor she had thought long lost.[break][break]

alas, from what she remembers of tales of gods, they are vengeful, selfish things. she shall keep this paranoid opinion in her mind for the meantime.[break][break]

she stomps in her boots up to her usual spot, a satchel full of empty pokeballs in her arms. team rocket gives her subjects to use when she requests them, but they could never quite hold a torch to seeking out the pests herself. besides, rattata are hardly sparse in these parts. they reproduce quickly, and seek to swell the sewers with their progeny. it would prove an easy task to scoop up a few younglings from their families.[break][break]

after all, test subjects are test subjects, and as such, must be procured at all costs. absinthe simply cannot work on anything relevant without them.[break][break]

"we should have a good choice of test subjects. they usually stick close to the city," she says to evelyn, motioning in lazy indication to a drainage system spilling into the burgeoning wilderness. someone told the chemist when she'd been new meat that this would be a prime spot, especially if one desires only the foolishly secure or the foolishly arrogant. frankly, absinthe sees little difference.[break][break]

with brisk certainty, the chemist hands off a hollowed pokéball.

This was fun. Team Rocket had become quite the breeding ground for conspiracy and drama, and she thrived in it. She had learned more than she ever expected, made some key connections, and of course, looked flawless doing it. Though she’d never admit it aloud, she owed Addy for this opportunity. Still, it was getting harder to hide the truth ( the child she wished to protect) she so carefully guarded, but the money was flowing just as fast as the research topics.

Evelyn strolled confidently, her posture effortlessly graceful, a stark contrast to her brooding, masked companion. This gave her a perfect excuse to show off her expertly trained Pokémon—not that anyone else could handle them as well as she could. “ That's good. I've heard so many rumors about weird territorial creatures running amok. I just hope we don’t run into them and waste our time.”

in silence, absinthe sets off into the outskirts, her long stride taking her in near even pace with her partner. the branches rustle and crackle beneath their feet, and in the distance, a far-off creature cries out mournfully. the wilderness is alive with the promise of violence.[break][break]

evelyn's mention of territorial creatures darkens absinthe's gaze.[break][break]

"pests," absinthe derides with a curl of her lip. "i have heard of them. they burst with light when destroyed. if they didn't, i would already be arm deep in a dissection."[break][break]

creatures linger in the distance. a canine, a bird. absinthe narrows her eyes, then ignores them, for they are not her preferred prey, and a sated predator has the luxury to be picky. she would prefer a creature either with chemical makeups more similar to humans, or a pokemon useful in her experiments. the two beings silhouetted on the horizon are neither.[break][break]

the chemist shakes her head sharply, and she approaches the drainage pipe leading into the sewers. the cloying stench of waste and damp earth hits her hard, and for a moment, absinthe wonders if her old friend is rethinking her decision to follow the chemist into the underbelly of society. for a moment, she dares to hope that there is some shred of humanity left in the snake. she is a fool to believe it.[break][break]

"too pretty to step through sewage?" absinthe asks evelyn, a biting question that belies both bitterness and... familiarity.

"Oh, I bet you would be," Evelyn remarked, knowing Addy would never turn down a chance to learn something new—so long as it was profitable, of course. "Pests, maybe, but definitely new research material! At least from what the reports say. They don’t seem to have a lick of Infinity Energy. It's something fascinating, like discovering plates. A coincidence, I think not."

She barely glanced at the Pokémon, dismissing the bird with a passing thought—more suited for dinner in her opinion. But there was something grim behind the dog’s eyes that caught her attention. Alright, then. She was busy, and time was of the essence. Without hesitation, she summoned her Dragonite to deal with the mutt swiftly. The dragon let out a powerful cry, almost cheering itself on, before unleashing Extreme Speed. In seconds, the dog was down.

"Good," Evelyn muttered, tossing a Pokéball gleefully in her hand. This should be a quickly and easy capture. However, her companion’s next words caught her off guard.

Or maybe it wasn’t the words but the nauseating stench of Dragon Pipe. Disgusting. She nearly gagged, but finding more Pokémon was a necessary evil. She just didn’t need Little Miss Poison taunting her about it. Evelyn’s eyes gleamed with sharp amusement as she tilted her head slightly, a smirk curling at her lips."Well, darling, someone’s got to keep the filth from rubbing off on you."

outrunning past mistakes is a futile effort. they will always cling to the flesh and bone of the afflicted with the visco-grip of glue. to run only slows one down, allowing the bad decisions to accumulate like fall leaves and damp earth upon cold stone.[break][break]

one can only beat themselves up for so long. still, this comes as little comfort to the chemist.[break][break]

absinthe hopes cole is somehow at peace in the afterlife. hell, that is—if he deserves the mercy.[break][break]

absinthe's eyes do not waver from her companion as she speaks, even as evelyn hounds the dog with her dragonite. for years, she's believed evelyn dead to her. it only seems fair absinthe could learn of the woman evelyn has become—even through what seems a trivial squabble. after all, perhaps she killed the girl absinthe so loved to hate long ago. "filth?"[break][break]

the smirk drawn onto her lips, albeit hidden by her mask, tastes of copper. "oh, evelyn," she chuckles, a sound devoid of any mirth, "i'm already filthy."[break][break]

the inside of the sewer pipe is pitch dark, though that does nothing to dissuade absinthe from pressing on. she can already hear the rustling of rodent-like pests further inwards, and in truth, in places like these, sometimes feeling is more useful than seeing. absinthe need only reach her fingers forward to feel the brush of mangy fur or the wet twitch of a dank tail. vermin are creatures of grime, of filth, and now so too is she.[break][break]

it is only expected to see a creature within that rules the garbage as a king. a garbodor is silhouetted in the distance against light filtering down through the gaps of a sewer grate. with a flash of light, absinthe calls forth an almost pristine looking frosmoth—normal in every way besides the slight purple tinge to her scales, the way her feathered antennae end in toxic chains.[break][break]

evelyn may bother with the beautiful pokemon of life, but absinthe only feels at home amongst the trash. that's why the frosmoth goes forth and stun spores the garbodor. that's why absinthe throws an empty pokeball at the thing in turn.

"Perfect, a new pet," she mused. She hadn't expected to capture it so easily, but life was full of surprises. She followed alongside Abby, doing her best to ignore the foul stench of waste. Thankfully, she wasn’t in her designer clothes—otherwise, this little venture would have been much more frustrating. She didn’t notice the large pile of trash—the Garbodor—until the light caught it and her masked friend took an interest. Yuck, not her style, but the nearby Meowscarada was. Their eyes met for a moment, making her grin. “Smyrna, be a good little dragon and get the kitty.”[break][break]

Her Dragonite snarled, giving her a dark look—Smyrna was nothing if not prideful. But the challenge seemed more appealing than disobeying her human. Lucky for her. The dragon lunged with Extreme Speed, but the feline was ready, claws honed with a wicked Night Slash. Smyrna hissed in pain, a mistake that cost the Meowscarada dearly. The Dragonite retaliated with a Hyper Beam, blasting the cat into the rocks.[break][break]

“I said get the kitty, not kill it,” she sighed.[break][break]

The dragon merely rolled her eyes, as if to say she knew her own strength, unlike some people. Both watched as the Meowscarada staggered slightly, eyes growing fierce. The power of Overgrow coursed through it—enough to do serious damage—if not for Smyrna pummeling it into the ground with Extreme Speed once more. Now the thing lay unconscious.[break][break]

“Well then,” she muttered.[break][break]

She masked her slight nervousness, tossing out another Pokéball. The cat would suffer for this later on. Every after went down she keep a smile looking at Addy, "Lucky for you, I don’t mind getting a little messy."[break][break]
