The night was young, and Eve felt as if she were young again. How many years had it been since she felt so alive and in control of her life. She was rising the ranks slowly an her odd friend by her side. She would be lying if she said it didn’t feel nice to have someone to chat with, especially when the nights were tough or experiments didn’t go as planned. Yet, she knew that the mighty masked would work herself to the bone if she didn’t speak up. She was just as driven as Addy, but the latter perhaps a bit more stubborn. That's why she pulled her away for a tonight when work was over.[break][break]

Tonight, the night was theirs to savor.[break][break]

It was a chance for both of them to enjoy and celebrate, just like in the good old days. “So, where do you think I’m taking you?”

there is something new about evelyn tonight, something alive and shimmering in her movements. absinthe might have found it infectious if she were still capable of such happiness. instead, she follows half a step behind the other woman, holding herself tight as if to keep her skin from crawling away.[break][break]

"i don't know," she admits, suspicious. it's been years since she's done anything but work, years since anyone has tried to pull her away from her missions. it feels unnatural, wrong. her eyes flick up towards the neon reflections on the buildings, having to remind herself that chemicals are more potent when allowed to rest. the night is theirs, eve had said.[break][break]

absinthe tries not to doubt her words.[break][break]

"wherever it is," absinthe muses, green eyes betraying no emotion as they scan across the figure beside her. "i can only pray it will involve alcohol."[break][break]

there is no other way she will be able to withstand a night of joy.

“We’re almost there. Have a little patience, would you?” Evelyn sighed, rolling her eyes. Honestly, Addy was the champion of whining today. This is why she needed to drag her out more often—spending all day in a lab or behind a bar wasn’t going to do her any favors. Addy needed a break, whether she liked it or not.[break][break]

“You literally own an entire bar. You can survive one night without alcohol,” Evelyn teased, a smirk playing on her lips.[break][break]

She leaned in against Addy’s shoulder, a subtle gesture of comfort despite her playful annoyance. Evelyn prided herself on being practical, but she had a soft spot for her friend—especially when she was sulking.[break][break]

“But if you really need a drink, they do have a bar,” she added with a knowing smile. “It’s a place I used to visit when I was younger. Trust me, you’ll like it.'[break][break]

Evelyn chuckled, half-expecting Addy to grumble again, but she didn’t mind. After all, she was always right, wasn’t she?

absinthe snorts at the comment about her bar. sure, she could get alcohol whenever she wanted, but that wasn't the point. she spends her nights there numbing herself so she can better focus on her formulas. after a couple of drinks, she feels nothing. it's easier to work that way.[break][break]

"they'll have to be more convincing than you are to get me to have a good time," absinthe mumbles, half-joking, but doesn't argue against eve's claims of liking it. in truth, she doesn't much care where they go as long as eve is comfortable and she can maintain some semblance of peace. there will likely be large crowds, as there always were, no matter the hour. perhaps she could simply fade into the background and pretend she's not there until the night is over.[break][break]

the proximity makes absinthe stiffen, unused to comfort. what was the last thing that made her feel warm? it must have been cole. her husband was warm and gentle in the rare moments that he loved her. everything after he passed had been brittle and frozen over.[break][break]

of course, eve is convinced that she will like wherever they are going. it reminds absinthe of when they were young, of the excitement they would feel after discovering the secrets of a new combination of chemical components.[break][break]

absinthe doesn't argue. only time will tell if she's right. she glances around at their surroundings. "are we almost there?"

Whatever the joke or reason for snorting absinthe, Evelyn had long since shifted her focus from the trivialities of their banter to something far more important—their destination. As they finally arrived, she cast a quick, appraising glance at the building in front of them. From the outside, it didn't look like much. The weathered façade was dominated by a large Lucario face etched above the entrance, with the name "PokéPlate Bistro" in fading letters beneath it. Certainly, it wasn't the kind of opulence Evelyn was accustomed to. This wasn’t the luxury she normally surrounded herself with, but rather, a stroll down memory lane.[break][break]

"We're here," she announced with a faint smirk, pausing for a moment as her eyes lingered over the familiar, albeit modest exterior. "Not quite what you were expecting, hmm?" Her tone held an air of superiority, as if she was delighting in the contrast between their current surroundings and the extravagant lifestyle she typically enjoyed.[break][break]

Without waiting for a response, Evelyn strode confidently toward the entrance, her heels clicking against the pavement with an unmistakable elegance. The interior was quaint, even a little worn around the edges, but it didn’t bother her. In fact, there was a certain charm to it, though she would never admit that aloud.[break][break]

"I figured there’s no need for anything too extravagant this time," she said, with a nonchalant wave of her hand, dismissing the thought of indulging in her usual taste for the finer things.

once upon a time, absinthe would have frowned at the way evelyn speaks about their destination. it feels unkind, somehow, to mock something for not meeting extravagant expectations. but then again, evelyn has never been one for sentimental attachments. it was one of her defenses against the world, the same way that cutting remarks were one of absinthe's.[break][break]

"i wasn't expecting anything in particular," absinthe says, even though that is a lie. evelyn is a woman of lavish tastes, an unstoppable force when it comes to enjoying the things that money can buy. a small, worn-down building with faded paint out front is hardly what one would imagine upon hearing of a favorite place of hers.[break][break]

still, it is good to be somewhere that isn't built entirely out of new money. at least it isn't a casino or bar. the atmosphere is familiar enough to keep her from feeling as though she has entered a new dimension.[break][break]

"nostalgia. how quaint." absinthe doesn't sneer, but it's a close call. anything to keep herself from revealing the tiniest hint of affection for the past. nostalgia is a dangerous game when you've lost everything. "let's hope it's as fun as you remember."[break][break]

she sighs, allowing her feet to carry her across the threshold and into the restaurant. it smells like recycled air and fried food. a younger her would have hated this place. now, she can only stare and try to see it through the lens of what evelyn must remember. almost instinctively, she reaches for her mask to adjust it, ensuring that her facade is firmly in place before stepping forward.[break][break]

"so, evelyn," absinthe says slowly, looking around at the other people seated at tables. "why here?"

That was a very good question. Why? There was the right answer, the one where she could tell the truth that lay deep in her heart, and then there was the vague one, where she skirted around the truth. The latter was something she had a tendency to do, but maybe not this time.[break][break]

"I figured it would be nice to see things from my neck of the woods. It’s a good place to relax and clear your head," she said with a gentle smile, as if offering a piece of her own world.[break][break]

She glanced around, her eyes softening. "It used to be my favorite spot when I was in high school. I didn’t have the luxury of sharing it with anyone who mattered. My parents were too busy with my sister." Her words were laced with a quiet bitterness, but she quickly masked it with a smile. "But I guess it’s their loss, right?"[break][break]

She paused for a moment, her fingers tracing of a seat but she decided to down gesture to the one next if Absinthe. "I never went to them for anything. I learned to do things on my own. I always came here to celebrate my achievements alone, because honestly, no one else was going to." She chuckled lightly, though it felt more like a defense than a joke.[break][break]

"I just figure it would be nice to simply take friend out here for a change of a pace." It was very clear she was bullshiting and the real answer was obvious but she pride wouldn't allow to admit. She wanted to celebrate and have fun with someone she cared about and have some good memories for a change. [break][break]
