freya has asked herself this same agonized question over the years. grief grips her, not at the memories, but that the words are now uttered by a child. she reaches up to touch the curve of one of her slender horns and the distant look in her eyes is almost humorous.

"you're human if you make mistakes," she says. "or so i think. do you still think i'm human?"

freya thinks of untangling eris' knitted fingers so that the girl can press her palm upon her own chest and feel the thud-thud-thudding of her heart. but she doesn't. people continue their lives around them. most cast sideways glances on account of her horns, but they pass eventually, with nothing else to do but stare.

"then i think you are too," she says.

she takes a sip of her coffee, straightening. "you don't have to do this alone. whatever is going on with you and mes. i'll make it work with sapphire. pax can kick my ass over it later." another sip. "or i can be here for you. just me, until you're ready."

But there is still a reluctance to let go of it, a first-hand experience that makes her stop to take the time and consider it.[break][break]

grief so vicious it turned her to stone. her desperation, her cry for help, keened to a nickit who gave her everything she wanted and broke her at her foundation in return. she knew nature's madness, and she knew it well, and she knows it still, and it haunts her, and it shames her, and she wouldn't wish it on her own worst enemies.

she wouldn't wish it on Elisabeth Fiorelli. she wouldn't wish it on this child.

she kneels. she looks into eris' eyes and her golds are raw with understanding - with barely-healed-over-still-deeply-hidden pain - and she apologizes, softly, as she reaches gently to hold her.

and after her sorries, with her voice a whisper, she tells her about her salvation - "the people you love, they'll remind you. they'll remind you of who you are when you think you've forgotten."

her expression crumples. she waits a breath, rights her face, and then draws back. unable to help herself - she sees delta now, here, with her long blue hair - her fingers tuck a lock behind eris' ear.

"sometimes there really is no good or bad. there just is." she hates how she sounds like a fortune cookie, but it's her truth. the world is, tragically, not black and white.

[attr="class","eris109"]Golden hair. Bright, beautiful eyes that enrapture her like the sun. For a moment, as those fingers sweep her hair behind her ear, she sees a figment of a ghost. A wisp of a memory drifting past with the faint scent of lavenders and cinnamon.[break][break]

"I want to make good decisions. I want to be good." A hand reaches up, hesitant for a second to touch Freya's hand. Then oh so gingerly grazing the back of her palm with her fingertips. "I want to protect people, not hurt them."[break][break]

She closes her eyes, gently leaning her head into Freya's palm. Hopeful for even a little hint of warmth as her heart bleeds and her body grows cold.[break][break]
