the quiet after the storm is deafening. absinthe has lived through dozens of moments like this: too tense to cry, too exhausted to stand. the only movement she registers is the painful expansion of her heart, threatening to burst through her ribcage with guilt. she should have saved more, done more. she should have stopped this before it got started. and instead evelyn's dragonite is dead, and sune... sune...[break][break]

sune is toxic, cursed, doomed to a life of agony, all because absinthe was too weak to fight the devil inside her. the shard that had seemed a gift now seems a burden, a curse, and one that she brought onto others.[break][break]

why did she think this was a good idea?[break][break]

but the question is moot. it's already done, and they are all suffering for it.[break][break]

it is a long moment before absinthe moves. before she speaks. when she does, her voice is raw with unshed tears, guilt, anger, betrayal. behind her, the echo of the devil watches with an unreadable expression.[break][break]

"evelyn," she breathes. "i... i'm so sorry."[break][break]

her eyes meet the ground. she doesn't know what to do. this isn't a trial she can science her way through. she can't fix a dead dragon, can't un-murder a friend or turn back time or undo the devil's work inside her.[break][break]

this is where she's led them. this is her legacy. destruction and grief piled upon more destruction and grief. she'd thought maybe she could escape it, that maybe evelyn could save her. but there is no saving absinthe blackwood from herself. not really.[break][break]

what will evelyn do now, without smyrna? with a poisoned sune?[break][break]

absinthe hasn't lost anything. her team is the same. she won the favor of a resplendent torturer. but evelyn, through being connected to absinthe, has lost everything.[break][break]

and though absinthe made evelyn promise to leave if it got to this point, absinthe realizes suddenly that she doesn't mean it. she wants evelyn to stay, through everything, through anything. even if it hurts her. even if it ruins her.[break][break]

absinthe is selfish that way.[break][break]

with nothing left to say, absinthe places a heavy hand on evelyn's shoulder.

There was an empty, hollow feeling in her chest—having a Pokémon taken away left a void that felt impossible to fill. She would mourn and grieve for as long as it took. Somehow, she’d need to come up with a story to explain Dragonite's absence to her daughter. Losing one of the strongest dragons she had ever known left an ache, yet Dragonite had gone down the way she’d always fought: with unyielding courage.[break][break]

“Don’t blame yourself. If she hadn’t stepped in, who knows what Munkidori might’ve done.” She glanced away, she could always searching for Dragonite’s spirit lingering at the borders. Maybe she could contact Robin about it… it wouldn’t be too hard, would it? But in this moment, she felt vulnerable, worn down, and almost entirely drained. The encounter had tested her in every way—mentally and physically.[break][break]

“We should leave... It’s not safe here. I’ve never handled a toxic chain Pokémon before, so I’ll need your help understanding how they work. I want to research them and the Loyal Three.” Maybe there was a way to control the poison or even fight against it. They would need a strategy for whatever awaited them. After a moment the woman placed a hand on hers. There was still so to unravel but for now a rest was really needed.

a decision has been made in the depths of absinthe's mind, one not brought on by sudden change, but rather solidified by what has transpired. somewhere, beneath all of the turmoil and pain, a thought has taken root: this may not have a happy ending.[break][break]

that thought isn’t hopeless, though. if anything, it gives her a sense of purpose. because if there will be pain, suffering, death, she will not allow it to be in vain. every person—every pokémon—that suffers from the devil inside of her, that suffers from her connection to the loyal three, from her research, will count for something. she has to make it count for something.[break][break]

right now, Evelyn seems to be looking towards the future, to finding hope and promise in a world that has just crumbled around their ears.[break][break]

"you're right," she agrees after a long moment, running a hand through her hair and glancing back at the echo. it watches them with an air of detachment, as if it hasn't just witnessed a life-and-death battle. as if it doesn't have a hand in what just happened. as if it isn't going to be the harbinger of their death.[break][break]

but evelyn is, like always, the more level-headed of the two of them. and absinthe is right to listen. the last thing they need is more fighting in this place, especially when both of them are at risk of falling apart.[break][break]

so with great reluctance, absinthe agrees. she packs up the echo into it's crystalline feather.[break][break]

and then they leave, taking only their wounds with them.
