Petalburg's recent takeover meant there were constant rounds of Rocket guards patrolling the perimeter. Any assault on a guard put everyone on high alert because it could be the beginning of a League assault. Naturally, when one guard at the back of a patrol group was struck down, it was cause for an investigation. [break][break]

"Well," Clover said as he and Kasper stood over the body, "this is new. You ever done an investigation like this? I'm no detective." Still, they were thrilled at the prospect of a new responsibility. They wanted to solve the case and help out the organization - and put this guy's spirit to rest in some way. Oricorio stood by Clover's said, almost inappropriately bright against the dim scene. There was a burning stench in the air, but the man's clothes weren't scorched.

kasper was not a detective. in fact, most of what they knew came from shitty detective shows back when they were thirteen, and after seven years and the obvious gap in reality it was clear they wouldn't work the same way.

they did know that they had to get the facts in order, even if said facts started and stopped at i'm standing in front of a dead body. there's a sort of numb realization to it, like it hasn't entirely sunk in and they're waiting for the man in front of them to cough and sit up.

"not at all. i haven't even seen- this. before." it feels weird, referring to the guard like that, but referring to him any other way feels no better. they pause, trying to get their thoughts together, even if they're certain this is a sink or swim scenario where they'll undeniably sink.

"there has to be a witness, right? someone who saw something? heard something?" that was how these things worked, right? it all seemed too perfect otherwise.

Kasper asked a good question. Clover hummed thoughtfully as they considered it. Guards were traditionally paired up, but it made sense of Petalburg's leadership opted to have guards use their pokemon partner as their counterpart rather than another grunt. It saved on money, manpower, and it didn't negatively impact the image of security that Rocket had placed around their newest acquisition. They simple had 'groups' of patrols, but they were spread out so far that they guards had no contact with each other. It was more like a factory line of guards and their pokemon, really.[break][break]

"Just him and his pokemon partner, who is missing. I wanna find the source of the smokey-fire smell. None of the smoke alarms have gone off." He didn't see a single scorch mark on the guard. Worse still, there were no pokemon footsteps in the dirt.

okay. so there were no real witnesses. kasper could...work with that, maybe. if they felt like lying to themself about it. their only chance was a pokemon that was long gone- and, from the marks, it had either been picked up or the pokeball was stolen.

or it had done this. kasper wasn't sure how, but in the face of a mystery murder, they weren't about to ignore any potential, and the lack of marks could mean it flew. or would there be marks? that didn't explain the lack of anything fire-related, either, but it wasn't like they had been part of a crime scene before.

"okay. um." they try to wrap their mind around some explanation, but the most that comes is their mind blanking for a second. "do we know if he had the pokeball with him? for his partner pokemon?" maybe, if it wasn't gone or destroyed, it could give them something to work with? they weren't sure what, exactly, but they could play it by ear.

and if it was....they were probably just fucked, to be honest. kasper wasn't meant to be a detective.

"Good question." Clover got closer to the body, undeterred by rigor mortis, and prodded around the guard's pockets. Kasper's comment about the pokeball reminded Clover to start from the bottom and work up rather than try to operate on guesswork. The two of them needed as much evidence as possible to support their conclusion. [break][break]

"It's either out or stolen, I would think." Would an assailant pocket the pokeball or destroy it outright? Leaguers didn't really participate in the poaching black market. They also didn't tend to outright destroy pokeballs. But she didn't feel confident about the problem stemming from a fellow Rocket, either. No one would be stupid enough to kill in this manner and at this time since there would obviously be lots of eyes on it. But if it wasn't League MO despite the potential motivation to distract Rockets, who would be stupid enough to kill when it would garner instant attention?
