Honestly, Alexei had forgotten the last time he’d entered the Safari. He was meaning to visit the last month, but due to a number of things happening all at the same time he wasn’t able to find any time to book a trip.[break][break]

Now that it was rather late in the month, he decided to hit the place up once again—if but for the reason that there were a few things that he saw that he was interested in.[break][break]

Specifically, one of them happened to be a Ralts. Sure, he already had Zarya, his Gardevoir, but…[break][break]

He really wanted her to have a knight with bladed arms for a companion. Wasn’t that incredibly sappy of him?[break][break]

Either way, he fished out the bills and slapped it on the counter. After receiving the four Safari Balls rolled his way, he then goes through the security check and out into the wilderness.[break][break]

To be honest, nothing has changed… too much.[break][break]

At least, that’s what he thinks.

For some reason, his PokéGear starts vibrating like crazy.[break][break]

Alexei wonders why this is so, and he takes a look at it—before his eyes do a freak-out at what the alert’s about.[break][break]

Shit, there’s a shiny Pokémon nearby?! He thinks, whipping his head around so fast he almost hears a crick and forces himself to stop. It’s not until he sees a vine being whipped around does he follow where it’s coming from, and—[break][break]

“Holy crap,” he mutters as he sees what had caused his Gear to go off like mad. While it wasn’t a Ralts, it was something else he was low-key hunting—ever since his Ranger friend had told him about how useful they were. He had a few seconds to decide who was going to be the one to corner this one, and he decides to send out Vincent—seeing as this is his best chance to get it without causing so much of a racket.[break][break]

“Vince, go. Here, take these with you,” and from his pocket comes several Berries, no doubt a little on the squishy side, but still very much edible. “You’re the best shot I have,” he adds quietly, watching as the Riolu wanders forward, laden down with a whole bunch of delicious Berries.[break][break]

The smell entices the Grass-type, and it looks over to the Riolu, who crinkles his face in his best attempt at a smile before setting down the pile. Making a gesture to it, he then grabs one of the Oran Berries and begins eating it—before offering some to the other Pokémon.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Alexei watches and waits for insanity to unfold. He doesn’t know if this is going to end well, but—[break][break]

To his surprise, the Chikorita waddles forward, poking the Riolu with one of its vines before pointing at the Berry pile. The Fighting-type nods at it, before offering her one of the fatter Oran Berries to take. Watching this from a distance, he waits, waits, waits—[break][break]

It takes one hell of a long time, but by then the pile of Berries have long since vanished, and he hears the familiar yipping noise, summoning him forward. He appears slowly from one of the bushes, and the Chikorita’s ready to bolt when Alexei sets down another handful of Berries. “Sorry, Vince. Forgot these,” he says to the Riolu in particular, while keeping his gaze on the Grass-type.[break][break]

Slowly, eventually, the jackal Pokémon urges the other forward—and eventually, she approaches. Feeling a tapping on his arm, he looks up and then rolls a few Berries to the Chikorita.[break][break]

“Have some,” he says to her quietly. “You’re hungry, huh?”[break][break]

A trilling noise, and the Berries are gone in seconds. While the Riolu is taking his sweet time, he watches, waits for the Chiko to react—and he gets another tap.[break][break]

More Berries?[break][break]

“Oh, I have more where that came from… would you… want to follow me?” he asks the Grass-type, this time offering a Safari Ball in exchange. The Riolu nods in approval—he can’t lie, the Berry patches near the Gym arena in Fortree are hella tasty.

No sooner than the Safari Ball dings and gets warped away, he decides to continue his search. Hopefully he would be able to find something that he’s looking for—something that Zarya could get along with![break][break]

The Chikorita was a bonus, after all.[break][break]

His meandering around the rea takes him past a pond, where he spots the single…ugliest Pokémon he’s ever had the misfortune to meet! Seeing that it was puffed up and had spikes all over its body, he was reminded of that one time he’d seen someone try to make some delicacy out of a puffer fish.[break][break]

“…nope,” Alexei says with a shudder, shaking his head and leaving the Qwilfish alone and heading deeper into the Safari Zone to keep searching.[break][break]

Who knows what he’ll run into out here?

In no time flat the Riolu catches up to him, and here Vincent sees that there’s another Fighting-type. One who he could see as an equal.[break][break]

Before Alexei could stop him, the jackal Pokémon dashes forward, eager for a fight and opening right away with a Force Palm one-two strike![break][break]

“Vincent!” he calls out, to no avail as the Mienfoo is caught by surprise with the attack and retaliates with a High Jump Kick. The Riolu, seeing that coming from a mile away, sidesteps the other, and instead of hitting the Riolu the Mienfoo ends up sailing too far and eventually hitting a tree instead.[break][break]

“Oops,” he says, blinking at the sheer stupidity he’d just witnessed. Not content, the Mienfoo retaliates with a barrage of star-shaped projectiles, and the Riolu is forced back several feet as the Swift attack connects. Right after that, the other Fighting-type suddenly uses Aura Sphere and it’s at this point the Riolu stares in awe—all for the better part of five seconds before it gets sent flying away.[break][break]

“Vince! No time to get jealous!” he calls from the side, tossing the second Safari Ball up and down.[break][break]

Pulling himself up, the Riolu collided with the Mienfoo with a well-timed Bullet Punch, right at the same time the wild Pokémon aims another attempt at a High Jump Kick. While the jackal Pokémon is forced back, the Riolu pushes on, eventually forcing a Counter that sends the Mienfoo flying before it lands with a thudding noise near his feet.[break][break]

“Reckless much, Vince?” he says as he drops the Safari Ball on the other Fighting-type’s head.

Once the Mienfoo had been acquired, the odd travelling couple decide to look deeper in the area, wondering what they’ll find next.[break][break]

Of course, Alexei isn’t too great at telling Pokémon genders apart, so the next one they come across has him stop and do a double-take. He’s about to throw another Safari Ball at the Ralts when the Riolu stops him.[break][break]

“What? Vince, what’s up?” he asks the Riolu, confused look on his face. The Fighting-type shakes his head, before pulling him away.[break][break]

“It’s a Ralts! Are you serious?” he adds a few moments later, before the Riolu shakes his head again and makes a pointed gesture at himself and then pointing at the other Pokémon again.[break][break]

“Are you absolutely sure it’s a girl?” he asks a few moments later Vincent starts walking around, looking like a dainty-ass. He gets a nod in return.[break][break]

“Well…thanks for the save,” he continues, before following the Riolu deep into the undergrowth.

After they leave the female Ralts behind, the odd traveling pair continues through the undergrowth.[break][break]

Who knows how much time they’re going to have to spend in here just looking for the male Ralts, the other half to Zarya, his Gardevoir. Maybe he should’ve brought her along to make the search much quicker…[break][break]

…a choice he now deeply ends up regretting.[break][break]

Looking at the two remaining Safari Balls, he knows he has to make this one count. It doesn’t take too long for the Riolu to spot another Pokémon in the undergrowth, and he chases after it. “Vince! Get back here!” he shouts after the Riolu—who’d gone to chase after a Buneary.[break][break]

When he manages to catch up, his eyebrows go up—he’d stumbled upon a battlefield, as the Buneary was in the middle of challenging the Riolu to a show of strength! As the Buneary comes down in a Bounce attack, the Riolu catches it right as it lands with a Counter-shove, using the energy to throw it off to one side.[break][break]

Seeing that the distance was reachable, the Fighting-type follows up with a quick one-two Force Palm strike before the other can get a Dizzy Punch out. Alexei can only wonder why the Riolu is fighting so hard—was it because he wanted to prove something?[break][break]

A Power-up Punch collides with the next Force Palm attempt—but the Riolu’s attack is stronger, overwhelming the Buneary. As it goes down for the count, Alexei throws the third Safari Ball, leaving him with just one…

After the Buneary had surrendered to the red beam of light, they continued—more like, the Riolu continued on ahead and left him behind.[break][break]

“Yeesh, Vince, wait for me!” he calls out to the overeager Riolu, picking up the pace and following the Fighting-type. Where the hell had it gone? He could only sigh, because this particular Pokémon of his liked to plunge on ahead and just go wherever the wind too him.[break][break]

Sighing again, he eventually finds the Riolu looking at a Cottonee. While normally this would make Alexei catch it without a second thought, he remembers that he’s down to one last Safari Ball, and even if he really wants to, he sighs once more.[break][break]

“Vince, no. Sadly. We’re still looking for that Ralts. A male Ralts, remember? We’ll find another Cottonee next time,” he says to the Fighting-type, who lets out a disappointed whine but continues onward, in search of that elusive Pokémon!

It was like the heavens decided to spare the man of wind his agony, and had literally dropped down a Ralts near where the Riolu was about to wander into. The Fighting-type let out several yipping noises, before catching sight of a Ralts that was peering out the undergrowth where it stood.[break][break]

“What? Did you find it?” he asks, and an affirmative noise is the answer. Blinking a few times, he’s about to rush forward when the Riolu holds up a warning paw in his direction.[break][break]

“Vince, what—“ he inquires, wondering why his Riolu was acting ever so strange. It’s not until a sudden blast of Psychic almost knocks the Fighting-type down does he understand that this is going to be some trouble to bring down.[break][break]

“Oh, crap,” he hisses, watching as the Riolu valiantly tanks the incoming Psychic rain-bomb of exploding rainbow energy balls, one after another.[break][break]

It’s not until he remembers Vincent has one particular technique that could end this in five seconds flat does he realize it—suddenly looking up, he whistles exactly once in the Riolu’s direction. Picking up on the hint, the Riolu rushes forward, bringing forward a series of Bullet Punch strikes at the little Ralts.[break][break]

Hearing a wail, he knows that the attack hits it mark, and another similar blast escapes his lips. Another Bullet Punch assault strikes the Ralts—and soon enough, it falls.[break][break]

“And there we go,” he says, throwing the last Safari Ball at the fallen creature.[break][break]

But he has a feeling he’s going to be back way sooner than he thinks…
