olivia was busy, exceedingly so as the final preparations were being made for Balder Schwartz to take over as gym leader. they had made arrangements as to who would do what, what would stay where, and now things would get done. now, at the moment, olivia was getting her paperwork in order. her secretary was busy with boxing the necessary files to send to olivia's new official office in ever grande at the league headquarters. the more private files, those she felt were safest in silver spire, were to remain here: at home.

yet, olivia was interrupted. "the fortree gym leader, Alexei Ivanov, has arrived." her secretary announced, peeking his head through her office door. she had forgotten. shit. he was to be the last challenger. "ah, of course. have him wait in the atrium, i shall be down soon." she ordered, and the secretary relayed the message to her underlings. alexei would be led through courtyard outside of silver spire, statues and monuments of various legendary pokemon (primarily water types) speckled through out before coming to grand ashen doors. once inside he'd find the main atrium, fully outfitted and decorated. a large indoor fountain was in the center spewing water a couple of feet into the air. etched into its pale stone base were the myths and legends of hoenn, circling the entire thing before ending on itself. more importantly, however, were the life sized statues that lined the fountain. each one was a prior gym leader of sootopolis with the center one being that of the recently fallen NIKOLAI PETROV; curiously a veiled statue was set aside in a corner. that being the main focus for the eyes, it may be easy to miss the other decor. greenery was potted throughout the white marble floors and two artificial streams ran around the perimeter of the room, spilling into a gate that presumably led outside. a grand staircase on either side of a platform led to the second floor opposite of the entrance, multiple hallways jutting out to other parts of the castle could be seen, as well as a grand spiral staircase for each of the towers that were connected to the main hub.

and from the staircase came the mistress of silver spire herself, olivia. she was dressed casually: locks of moonbeams done up in a ponytail, a lab coat over a simple black and blue tank top, and silver training shoes. "welcome to silver spire, leader ivanov." olivia greeted as she descended the marbled steps. she made her way to the fountain, fingers trailing in the clear waters, and asked, "i take it you're here for your a challenge, no?"

Coming in on Fenrir was a different experience as compared to say, Gabriel or Kyouya. While he still held his first two Pokémon in high regard, there was still something about Air Noivern that got him all excited.[break][break]

While he knew that he’d gotten off on the wrong foot with this particular Gym Leader, he was here, on a mission—sort of. In a way, he wanted to have his first actual Gym Challenge, but not as the leader—rather, as the person on the opposite side of the field.[break][break]

And of course he made sure to have at least one Electric-type on him just in case shit went south.[break][break]

Of course, while he had his best of the ‘best’ parts of his team, he actually…had one peculiar other Pokémon with him. After being wheedled, he’d finally agreed to bring his little secret over.[break][break]

Surely he could at least trust this Gym Leader with a secret?[break][break]

While the place was really pretty—most of the statues caught his eye, he never thought he’d be seeing a haunting face again—wait, he remembered seeing the former Sootopolis Gym Leader fall in that stupid blasted Navel Rock attempt to scale the tower. Burned alive by mystical fire…[break][break]

Cringing internally, he shoves this mental image away, waiting for the current Gym Leader to show up.[break][break]

To her question, he raises his right hand while holding up a finger.[break][break]

“Well, I’m not sure if you could call this a ‘challenge’, because… on good authority I was told you were interested in mythos. Especially, those that surrounded Water-types, correct?” he inquires of her, his other hand shuffling around in his pocket until he finds the shrunken-down marble he was looking for.[break][break]

“I have…something, to show you. If you wouldn’t mind?”

olivia kept her visage neutral at alexei’s questioning; internally however, she was arching brows as high as the towers silver spire was named for. she had never been quiet or discreet about her worship of water legendary pokémon nor was her status as professor of myth of a secret, in fact it was something she boasted of often. so why the fortree leader was tiptoeing around the subject was intriguing. what secrets did this master of flying types possess?

“yes, of course.” she answered immediately, the curiosity that had always driven her peeking through the stern faced persona of a professor. with the secerecy came a concern of her own for privacy. she walked past him and towards a hallway hidden away in shadows. from the waters of the fountain her vaporeon rose as she recomposed herself from her liquid to physical self, and the eeveeloution trailed behind her mistress. olivia called to alexei as she approached an archway descending into damp darkness, "perhaps somewhere more private."

she didn't wait for an answer. there was something calling her, and olivia could feel it in her bones. she needed to be by the sea, the true sea. the dark depths where the rays of sunlight cannot penetrate; where her gods called home. meara patted along behind her as the stairs shifted from freshly polished to ancient crumbling steps. the silent darkness was sliced through by her voice as she alerted her guest, "careful now, the footing here can be slippery." the air around them grew cooler the further down they went and the only light that guided them was the aurora beam that glittered in meara's mouth, the rainbow light gently spilling out around them.

finally they reached the bottom: an underground cave where a spring of salt water pooled in the center, presumably connecting to the salty sea beyond the walls of silver spire. runes and carvings were etched into the white stone walls, depicting various legendary pokemon. olivia moved towards a silver brazier that stood alone in the room, and nodded to meara. the vaporeon shot the aurora beam at the brazier and the rainbow light filled the cavern. at last, olivia faced alexei, "what is it you wish to show me?"

He figured, showing this right in plain view of everyone wasn’t going to be a good thing.[break][break]

So he could understand why the need to go somewhere much more private was understandable—besides, there was currently only one person alive in the entirety of the region who knew that he had this particular Pokémon with him.[break][break]

Lips curling into a bit of a smile at the Vaporeon who’d emerged from out of the fountain’s depths, he makes sure to follow the other leader down a hidden passageway. Looking around in silent wonder, he could only guess how deep under the actual city they were going at this point, the cave walls eroding down from smoothness to extreme wildness as they descended deeper underground.[break][break]

It does remind me of Shoal Cave, only… he ponders privately, being extremely careful not to slip and lose his balance. Thank the fuck he decided to wear his hiking boots today.[break][break]

The moment they arrived in at their destination, his eyes grazed over the carvings into the white rock, before a soft rainbow light illuminates the cavern.[break][break]

“I suppose this is safe enough…” he mutters, looking around. All this time his fingers never left the Dive Ball, so he pulls it out and pops it up to its full size.[break][break]

“Begging your pardon, then,” he adds, and with that he sends out the occupant, watching as the stream of red light transforms into the little…troublemaker.[break][break]

Because yes, that was what Zelle was. A troublemaker through and through.[break][break]

The cooing sound from the Phione was instantaneous. Circling around the cavern, enthralled at the sight of the water within, she comes to a stop and nestles herself in his hair.[break][break]

“Zelle, no, not there. Not my hair,” he grumbles, trying to pry the Phione away from the fluffy perch. Hearing a protesting noise coming from the Water-type, he clicks his tongue and finally manages to free her from his hair, now a veritable tangled mess.[break][break]

a dive ball? this time olivia's brow did arch, if only for the brief moment before a beam of red light shot forth from the blue sphere - in that blink of an eye olivia had one thought only: what was this man of wind and wings doing in the depths of the sea? the answer was shocking and forthcoming immediately. it was the maiden. olivia gasped and was visibly shaken, taking a few steps back from an actual goddess. for the first time in years, the smoothing talking witch of the sea was speechless.

the maiden was so kind and gentle, innocent and naïve; pure and free from the pollution and toxicity of humanity and that above the waves. this was an omen in its most unfiltered way. for olivia to bask in the glory of she, a Phione... left the mere mortal that she was humbled before the virgin goddess. "i sing of phione," olivia began, gracefully stepping into a curtsy of sorts and her melodic. it was an ancient ritual other clan which instructed the faithful what to do should they ever be fated to meet their Ladies of the Sea. all olivia could do was recite what had been drilled into her for nearly two decades. "the pure maiden, watcher of evil, who delights in safeguarding the righteous." she continued in her singsong voice. the hymn was ancient, and hadn't been heard in centuries since the high priestess of yore in this subterranean cavern.

she continued, voice shaken at first but olivia continued nonetheless, “innocences incarnate, the child of the sea; of you first i sing and with you i begin; now that i have begun with you, i will end this song.” olivia dipped her hands into the arcane well spring of seawater that had been hidden away long before the first construction of silver spire had began centuries ago. her head dipped, meara the vaporeon bowing in a sense, both gym leader and pokemon offered their respects and gifts of saltwater to the maiden goddess the sea.

at last olivia's ocean eyes rose to meet those of the phione and welcomed, "oh miraculous one, maiden of the sea, i am blessed to be in your aura." she was bowing, neck exposed as one does to show respect.

He…was not expecting the reaction from the other Gym Leader to be something so close to reverence.[break][break]

What with the way that Zelle was now trying to get back onto her favorite perch atop his head, he could only blink in silent wonder as he watched her… wait, what was she reciting?[break][break]

It sounds like a song… but it’s nothing familiar that I know about… he thinks, before shushing the little Phione again. Another series of cooing noises try to catch his attention, but he sighs.[break][break]

“Zelle, I dunno about you, but she thinks you’re some kind of a…deity, or something,” he says, once his mind had managed to catch up to what the Gym Leader had done.[break][break]

He couldn’t believe that the self-proclaimed ‘Queen’ was actually bowing in the presence of a little troublemaker! While he wasn’t privy to any of what she knew, he could only observe the going-on in silent wonder.[break][break]

Of course, this lasted all of five seconds as the Phione then made a beeline toward where Olivia was, thumbless little limbs flapping about and attempting to latch herself on the other human’s face in its favored face-hugging greeting.[break][break]

“Zelle! No, stop that! Don’t suffocate her!” Alexei calls out, frozen to the spot as the incoming Water-type was about to make a grab for Olivia’s face, about to greet her in the way the little Phione knew best…

olivia was speechless as the phione came flying at her with those stubby little arms. it was a blessing to be graced with the mythical creature's presence and an honor to be touched by the blue blob. the water witch broke out into a grin at the face hug. meara gave off a low growl to warn the other pokemon, but olivia dismissed it with a wave of her hand. she chuckled and gently pulled the phione off from her cheeks. "i am, in more ways than one, shocked." she said at last, having freed herself from the deity's grip. there was not a person alive of her clan who could claim such as she.

olivia coo'd at the baby pokemon and ran a finger across its puffy face. still smiling, her eyes remaining on the phione in her arms, she asked, "how did you come by this daughter of the tides, alexei?" there was no point in beating around the bush. her tone was full of joy and glee and nothing could ruin that for her, but how a man of sky and feathers came across a demigod of the ocean was concerning - if not not curious.

The request to recount his story of how he’d encountered Zelle was… well, at least the initial meeting wasn’t too scary. It was the aftermath of what happened when he decided to return alone that was… well, that would be for another day.[break][break]

“There was a disturbance down in Shoal Cave, so I went there with a partner. Former Interpol Agent, now the Gym Leader of Verdanturf. I presume you’ve heard of Thomas Benoit?” he inquired, waiting for her to answer. Whether or not she would reply, he would allow a few moments of respectable silence before continuing.[break][break]

“There was something down in the caves, a crapton of Golbats were causing a ruckus and we had to drive them away. They almost caused a cave-in, but thankfully we were able to get away unharmed. And then, we found this cave that connects to the rest of the Eastern Hoenn Sea… and there it was. The egg,” he continued, recounting everything as if it had happened only yesterday.[break][break]

And then, one day… there she was,” he ended, gesturing at the Phione, who was now floating back to where he stood before nestling herself once again in his hair.[break][break]

“She likes face-hugging people. Very few have seen her, I made sure of that… because who knows what would happen if she fell in the wrong hands?” he added after a few moments of silence, reaching up and giving the Phione a poke on the cheek.

she listened to his story, a brow arched at the mention of Thomas Benoit . that man seemed to be involved in many, many things. more importantly, however, was the revelation that this child of the undertow had been found in an egg. that was a marvel in and of itself. as alexei finished, her ocean eyes turned icy and cold; like a glacier as she snapped, "undoubted terror and horror."

"yet, you have done us all an honor and service, alexei, keeping this young one safe." olivia's voice had lost its sharp cold edge as her eyes drifted to the sea guardian. "phione and manaphy are guardians of the sea." she said quietly, releasing four water type starters in a flash of multicolored light. "so they may play whilst we talk." olivia explained, gesturing to the group of pokemon who all eyed the phione curiously.

"and we must talk, alexei. tell me, are you familiar with the term, 'avatar'?"

“I dunno about you, Zelle, but…” he began, looking up in time to see a blue, squishy head peering down at him from her favorite perch. He was used to being face-hugged by the little one, all things considered, but the way she would just shoot off and attempt to face-hug other people was really concerning.[break][break]

The sight of the other Water-types now curiously ogling the Phione drew her attention, and off she went to hover and float around them, the long appendage coming out of her head glowing softly as she approached the Mudkip and the Brionne.[break][break]

Turning his attention back to Olivia, Alexei’s face had a look of confusion on it. Avatars? What the heck?[break][break]

He tilted his head to one side in confusion.[break][break]

“I’m afraid… I don’t follow what you mean. I’ve never heard of it used in any kind of context that’s not related to video games, so…” he replied, his face having a stumped expression on it.[break][break]

"this one, the maiden of the sea - i do not think she is quite ready to such.. or even if she can, but her protection should be of the utmost importance alexei." olivia noted cooly, her tone serious and lacking warmth. "to be chosen, even if not for the great responsibility of an avatar, is an honor. you are her guardian it would seem..." she trailed, the realization of what was wrong coming suddenly. "alexei... when you found her, the maiden phione, was she alone?"

The rest of the words completely flew over his head, and he tilted it to one side in confusion, because what the actual hell was going on he did not understand what she was saying.[break][break]

"the maiden is the daughter, alexei - even as an egg, she would not be without some sort of guardian to protect her pure soul." olivia explained, her lips pursed. "for her to be alone is truly a sign, an omen.." she shook her head, reaching into a pocket of her lab coat for a notepad. "i will be brief, alexei. from the sea, stems life." she drew a closed circle with some swirls, resembling a wave.

"and this great power of life, and death, is governed by she who sleeps; the bringer of floods, the tide caller: kyogre." she followed, drawing another circle with an ancient glyph in the center.

"as she sleeps, her trusted guardians of the sea keep watch. they go by many names: those who call storms, whose wings conjure whirlwinds - lugia." she drew a simple feather, split into two near the tip.

"yet even lugia needs one to patrol the inner workings of the sea; not within the trenches of the depths, but not above the crashing tides. it is there that the way watchers, phione and manaphy, reside." she drew a final sketch of an egg with some dots.

"phione is the daughter of manaphy, both patrol the seas for evil and filth... given the current state of the world, pollution and human activities are believed to have driven them from their natural habitats but still. it is... concerning, if not alarming, that a phione was left alone, and as an egg? that is what you said?"

The moment she mentioned the word ‘omen’, his eyebrows furrowed out of concern.[break][break]

Okay, just what exactly had he gotten himself involved in? Looking over to where the Phione was playing with the other Water-types, he turned his attention back to her, listening to the explanation she was dishing out.[break][break]

It—it was confusing, for him at least.[break][break]

At the mention of not one, but two… two names he thought only existed in what he surmised were sailor’s tales and mythos, his eyes widened. At the sight of the egg, he pointed at it shortly.[break][break]

“There. It looked—it looked exactly like that. Her egg. I kept it… well, ‘fresh’, as you may, with salt water. It wasn’t good to have it dry up and shrivel…”[break][break]

When she reaffirmed the egg statement, he nodded.[break][break]

“Yes, exactly it. Just that. Only the egg, and nothing else. What’s going on, what’s happening?”

there was a pause, the only sound that of gleeful bubbles and playful splashes as her pokemon entertained the demigoddess. "i don't know, alexei." olivia said at last, ripping free the paper she had made her notes on and handing it to the gym leader. "what i do know, or can presume at least based on my research, is that this is a sign. the natural order, the balance of the ecosystem, or perhaps the push and pull of human and pokemon activities..." she sighed, running a hand through her moonlit hair.

"what i can say is that you have provided me with ample information to make a decision and plan that has been in the woodworks for far too long; so thank you." olivia said at last, snapping her fingers for her pokemon to join her. "and you have proven yourself to me as being worthy of the rune badge - your skill with pokemon did not need to be proven to me, i already knew so given your status as a gym leader." she offered him a soft smile, reaching into her lab coat to reveal the badge. "take this alexei ivanov, and take what i have told you and pay heed to this warning. things are changing in hoenn, and the gods have taken notice. for better... or worse, we do not know."

another sigh escaped her lips, "but i do know that you are pure of heart. your intentions are good, you mean well - and if the maiden of the sea places her trust in you, so can i. we will meet again, i just pray that it is not too late."
