Usually, Annie and her Pokemon would have to search for wild monsters, but Frankie’s presence prompted many to show themselves, mostly out of curiosity. Such was the case with the Litleo that jumped out of the bushes, wide eyes staring at whatever the Null was. Piercing eyes watched back, trying to remember its training. A front claw slowly raised to greet the Litleo, and tell it that it meant no harm. Either that was enough to sate its curiousity, or the chimera’s abyssal glare made it turn tail. Either way, the encounter didn’t last long.

It had summoned its friend, a Medicham, to check out the chimera instead. The fighting-type managed to be several times more intimidating than the little lion, standing in a battle stance and glaring up at Frankie. The chimera glared back, as it always did. Annie stared too, but her look was more relaxed, with only a hint of concern in them. She wouldn’t give an order unless her beast lacked the restraint she’d taught it.

Their standoff lasted twenty seconds, but each second felt like five to the trainer. Both her and the wild Pokemon spent the whole time wondering – worrying – that the next second would be when Frankie tore his targets into ribbons… But the moment never came. Slowly, very hesitantly, it disengaged and kept walking. Annie released a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding and followed suit, keeping a careful eye on the Medicham in case it tried a surprise attack.

By contrast to the Medicham, an Indeedee seemed much less intimidating. If anything, its deadpan stare was more of a nuisance to the chimera, but was it one that it would waste time on? Not when it had done so well so far. It looked back to gauge Annie’s thoughts, since she always wore them on her face. She was smiling, and had been since they’d passed the Medicham. That smile, he’d realised much too late, meant a lot. It didn’t want to see it disappear, especially not because of it. That felt… bad.

And so Frankie continued on. Hurried footsteps caught up to him, but they were too heavy to be the shunned Pokemon’s. It was Annie, her smile twice as big, stroking Frankie’s side as they kept walking. “You’ve been doing great, buddy! I can see you thinking hard about these things, so it’s great to see that you make the better choice every time.” She looked relieved. Frankie liked that too, it mused. Its eyes were trained on the road ahead, waiting for the next enemy to show itself, but the grunt he gave in reply was much more than Annie could have expected a few weeks before, so it kept her happy.
