a new year brings new expectations. civil unrest starts to manifest in the form of online criticisms that spike after the three day war. now that the region no longer has to face the threat of megalopolans, the people of hoenn turn to address smaller and more personal issues. will the league rise up to the situation? what about questionable events that have transpired, overshadowed and overlooked in the face of more imminent issues?
after the ultra beast war, hoenn begins to heal. the megalopolan invasion may have failed; however, it is clear there is much more at stake. a prophecy revolving around a cyclical meteoroid, the appearance of necrozma and a dangerous and viral alien threaten the safety of the region once more.
with rocket's new boss, the resurgence and reappearance of the crime syndicate's presence is imminent. the league has done its best to repair its reputation, and with the victory of a war under their belt, perhaps it is enough. but the seeds of distrust have already been sown in the ravaged land of this region, causing many to wonder what will grow?
[attr="class","athread"]She’d insisted that the vigilante go ahead, so that she could hide behind a building. Two minutes later, her voice echoed from within. “The hero Pokkenger has found his newest partner in questionable-crime…” Light flashed from the side of the building, revealing glimpses of Annie’s shadow. At least, the figure seemed to be mostly her, with a few ‘improvements’. It wasn’t until she sprang out from her cover, hands on hips as she stared the man down, that her plan became clear:
She’d commandeered a domino mask, and a torn length of black cloth draped her from neck to ankles. If not for her elbows jutting out, she might have kept the illusion of a costume, but her tracksuit was plain as day beneath. Not that a lack of funds had ever stopped Annie. “Together, with the fiercest of Pokemon, they will take back Hoenn’s shores from the giant menace!”
Her partner lazily strolled out of the cave – a lilac Ampharos, raising an arm in greeting to the man. The living lighthouse seemed unimpressed – or perhaps unamused by her show. “Said Pokemon will try to show a little more enthusiasm for heroics!” His expression went unchanged as he raised his other arm, looking to Kazimir for some sort of support. Annie looked too, her wide eyes searching his body for approval, or at least excitement.
[break] the masked hero looked between his newest sidekick and her ampharos, slightly visible by the movements of his helmet. underneath the mask kazimir was blushing like crazy as he was just completely flattered that she decided to embrace his theatrics. "yes! a true hero can't do anything unless they too have cooperative pokemon!" [break][break] he patted the back of the ampharos to try and signal it to get into the spirit of everything much like his own machoke who appeared behind them and let out a roar as he flexed his biceps while kaz took a step forward to present himself in front of the group. "between our powers combined the team of pocky and pokkenger and our pokemon can do anything! so prepare yourselves foul creatures for you shall receive our full might a hundred fold!" [break][break] the wailord let out a wail of grief as a response to the superhero's remark as it laid there in the sand of the beach. "so...we just gotta move that big guy back to sea. simple enough. machoman let's get to work, c'mon pocky we need all the manpower we can muster!" both kazimir and his machoke raced down to the giant whale and placed their hands against its hide and pushed. nothing really happened except a piling of sand at the back of their feet as they kept digging further down into it the more they pushed with increasingly loud groans.
[attr="class","athread"][player]https://www.mboxdrive.com/The%20Path%20of%20Justice%20%20CrossCode%20(Original%20Game%20Soundtrack).mp3[/player] Amp hung his head, realising that he was on his own. Annie, on the other hand, had a smile that couldn’t possibly grow larger. Even if she couldn’t see his face, the lack of laughter and mockery meant the world. “Keep your spirits high, little light! If I’m right, we’ll need you to be on top of your game.” He nodded back, all too aware of what she meant. The junior hero gave him a thumbs-up, took one step forward, and then jolted a foot into the air at the Machoke’s roar.
Maybe she was a little too excited.
Her feet touched the ground, and the smile remained as if nothing had gone wrong. While the rest of the crew rushed forward to try and force out the Wailord, Annie didn’t budge. She’d owned a Wailmer for a while, and could barely budge him on a good day. She didn’t have a chance in hell of forcing its evolution to go anywhere. Not alone, at least.
“I think we’ve got a better idea. A little risky, but all the best ideas are. Amp, are you ready?” He nodded, a lack of enthusiasm exchanged for determination. The stone strapped to his back had remained mostly hidden, but when Annie pulled her Key Stone (tied to a string) from her pocket, all became clear. “Right! Let’s power up!”
The transformation was brief, but a spectacle to behold. The two stones shined, their rays of light seemingly searching for each other. The Ampharos braced himself as the Mega Stone expanded a mirage of itself, shielding him from their eyes as he involved even further beyond. As the shell of light exploded, Amp revealed himself once more, roaring to the sky. Annie could never tell whether it was out of exhilaration or pain, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to find out.
Instead she focused on the task at hand. “We don’t have long! Amp, whack ‘em with a Focus Blast! Everybody else… Get out of the way, probably!” If her words hadn’t been enough of a warning, the charging of the attack might have done the trick. The ball of energy between Amp’s hands quickly found itself adorned by stray streaks of barely-restrained power, rapidly flickering in and out of existence. Annie heeded her own advice and took several steps back, just in case.
The ball of fighting spirit was fired straight into the Wailord, the speeding bullet forcing the behemoth several feet away from them – and closer to the ocean. The progress came at the cost of a strained groan from the beast they were meaning to help; Annie frowned, but held no remorse in her voice. “Most other Pokemon would’ve been knocked out from that, but Wailord’s got too much fat for it to really hurt. I think. I’m pretty sure.”
[break] if kazimir's jaw could drop through his mask it would at the sight of the ampharos mega evolving of all things. it had been a while since he saw the girl sure but...damn. she was good. he really lucked out on finding a pretty good sidekick. [break][break] it wasn't so lucky though when the focus blast came right at them and he and his machoke dived out of the way with surprise and terror on their faces as they watched the wailord go sailing off. the machoke's jaw dropped for the both of them at the sight of such power. he wanted that, or at least some form of it. "that was totally wicked!" his shock was interrupted by his trainer signing praise for the move and reaching into his pockets for more pokeballs. "and gives me an idea!" [break][break] he brought out his feraligatr kaiju and his blissey scrambles, both of whom were happy to get a taste of that fresh sea air. "ok you two here's the gist, we gotta move that big blubber boulder back into the sea. both of ya grab him by the tail and try to send him flying ya hear?" the command was pretty vague but they understood what he meant and they made their way to the wailord. as machoman watched them kazimir pulled him into a one armed hug and pointed at the mega ampharos with enthusiasm. [break][break] "hey machoman, tell that guy we want another showing of that ok? hey pocky! think you can blast that thing again when we send it into the air?!" with that the machoke faced the mega ampharos and gave it a standing ovation and telling it that an encore was wanted. on kaiju and scrambles side of things they grabbed the tail of the whale and using kaiju's superpowered strength and scrambles' skill with tossing of seismic proportions they whipped the wailord around the beach once before flinging it a few inches away from them as the thing's large weight was bringing it back down thanks to gravity.
[attr="class","athread"][player]https://www.mboxdrive.com/The%20Path%20of%20Justice%20%20CrossCode%20(Original%20Game%20Soundtrack).mp3[/player] It was near-frustratingly difficult to read the emotions of a masked man, but in a situation like there’s, silence could only be taken as a good thing. The girl’s grin went from ear to ear, not just because of the hero’s approval, but her Pokemon’s power to leave a lasting impression. Where they were headed, they needed to make a mark everywhere they went.
Seeing the man talk to his Pokemon helped to lift the Ampharos’ spirits too. Drifters like Annie and her Camp met a lot of trainers, and most of them fit into two camps. Those who treated their partners as dear friends tended to be further down the ladder, while those that barely spoke to them in the midst of action made up most of their challenges. It was refreshing to see a man that could do both. At least, he assumed as much. Why else would Annie force a Mega Evolution on him?
No amount of stones could protect him from an Encore, and so the dragon found itself charmed into sharing his trainer’s ego. Without a thought, he bowed to the party, while the girl behind him stifled her giggles. “Sounds like a plan, team! Let’s see how it goes!” A pair of Pokemon aided each other in taking the Wailord for a ride… Or at least, trying to. “Well, it could've worked,” Annie muttered.
Amp charged the Focus Blast over his shoulder, because it was the only thing he felt compelled to do, and Annie realised too late that he couldn’t stop himself. “Step away from the Wailord!” she called, seconds before Amp Hadouken’d his blast into the beached beast. Again, the attack shifted it closer to the ocean, and again, the poor thing bemoaned its fate.
Pocky pursed her lips, a hint of regret and pity briefly revealing itself. Even for a Pokemon of its size, a blow from a Mega Evolved Pokemon was nothing to joke about. On top of that, there was only so long that Amp could safely stay transformed, and that time was close to running out. “I think we’ve got about one attack left in us, but we can make it count! Anything explosive or forceful that can get it up will be great… We’ll time it better this time, so we can really send it flying! Then your Blissey can heal it up before it goes, right?” Amp nodded in agreement, his train of thought otherwise unhindered by the Encore.
[break] the onslaught by the young heroes did very little to actually make a dent in their progress on this mission. however they were not going to lose any heart on this! it was just going to take a bit more hard work and guts and a little extra time to get the job done. so hearing pocky get into the spirit of it just motivated kazimir even more! he couldn't just sit back at let her do all the legwork! [break][break] "alright then! one power move coming up! but first...let's get this giant buddy some r and r!" releasing one final pokemon from his belt was a dewott that crossed his arms and stared down the large beast that they were dealing with. "ok kusanagi! scrambles! let's cool this big boy with a water sport and a heal pulse!" the dewott sprayed a shower of water to keep the wailord hydrated and the blissey let loose a pink veil of energy to heal its wounds and give it a soothing feeling deep within its body. it was the least they could do for knocking it around so roughly. [break][break] "okay! machoman, kaiju, let's send him flying with a power punch!" the machoke and feraligatr had their turn now, using a dynamic punch and superpowered strength the two of them let loose a powerful left and right hook to the whale's side that got it moving. they managed to lift it off the ground but only a few inches, however they did manage to push it towards the ocean much farther than hitting it straight up like last time.
[attr="class","athread"][player]https://www.mboxdrive.com/The%20Path%20of%20Justice%20%20CrossCode%20(Original%20Game%20Soundtrack).mp3[/player] He’d brought a whole team to do the job. In hindsight, maybe she should have as well. The Pokemon she’d brought along were versatile, but her mega-boosted Ampharos aside, she doubted any of them would show the strength they’d need to get the Wailord back where it belonged. A lot was riding on one last shot. “Thanks, Scrambles! Everybody else, let’s get ready for one big shove!” Team Pokkenger did the heavy lifting, as far as she was concerned. While her Pokemon strained itself to be the strongest, their cooperation, timing, eagerness to help one another… It was hard for her to ignore the hard work of her fellow trainer. If only it didn’t come at the cost of a behemoth being pummelled, but hey, its blubber would spare it a great deal of pain. As they prepared their attacks, so did Amp, the last of his Focus Blasts amassing between his arms.
Seeing a fifteen-metre beast being forced into the air was always an impressive sight, and even moreso with some assistance. As their target reached the peak of its (admittedly) small arc upwards, the fighting sphere shot forward to bolster their efforts. Having been spared the trouble of having to get off the ground, the Wailord gained the power of flight!
…Very temporary, uncontrollable flight still counted as flight, right?
The beached beast landed… back in the sand. Mostly. Its front end touched the sea, and kept touching it even as the waves drew in. The Pokemon flapped its flippers, trying to overcome the final hurdle alone. A futile effort, but they were so close that one final push could have let it swim once more.
The push couldn’t come from Amp. Evolution energy solidified and shattered off his body, dispersing his luscious mane and tale. Annie offered a hand on his back, knowing that he would be fine after a few breaths. “That was some great stuff, Amp! There’s no way we would’ve finished this today without you. I’m gonna go finish up, alright?”
She took his nod as his blessing and jogged off, beckoning for the team to follow. “Can’t believe we got that close… But now’s not the time to be grumpy about it!” Finally, it seemed, she deemed the task worthy of her hands. To nobody’s surprise, her pushing against the Wailord did absolutely nothing, but at least she was trying.
[break] they were close to succeeding! seeing the giant beast already halfway in the water was a clear sign that this job was going to be a cakewalk if they did it right. pokkenger turned towards the ampharos who was changing back to normal and gave it a big thumbs up for a job well done. "ya did good buddy. now take a nap and leave the rest to us!" he probably didn't need to really say it since annie herself was already making her way down to the wailord and started to push it with her own strength. [break][break] well attempt to anyway. a little girl was not going to move something like that on her own. heck not even kazimir himself and he had a daily weight lifting routine to follow! still it was nice to see her get into the spirit of things. "now now pocky, your heart's in the right place but this is a job for real muscle! c'mon men!" it couldn't be seen due to his own costume but the superhero did his best to flex and show off his own figure along side the males of his team who joined him. scrambles was off to the side, swooning. [break][break] the five of them joined annie in pushing, with kaiju using his superpowers to help push the beast as it slid against teh sand and slowly inched closer to the sea. "machoman!" the machoke let out a grunt as a dynamic punch was unleashed to give it one final push towards the ocean. would that do it?
[attr="class","athread"] Annie didn’t feel like she was making any progress. Probably because she wasn’t, as long as she was alone. The masked man’s words went unheeded, and between grunts she offered her retort. “I’ll have you know that my heart muscles are on another level!” She realised too late that that didn’t sound healthy, but whatever! They had other things to worry about.
Kazimir and his Pokemon inched the Wailord closer to safety (try as she might, Pocky may as well have been moral support). Fins splashed more and more water; it was either excited to be back in the water or desperate to speed up the process. The Dynamic Punch served as one last budge, enough to let the formerly-beached beast take control of its life again. After spending so long barely moving it, the ease with which the sea beast swam was almost a mockery to them.
Annie let it slide, knowing that she would be in a hurry to move too if she’d spent the day paralysed. Their new friend was smart enough to understand that its pain had a purpose, and overjoyed that it had paid off. Their reward was Wailord song – low tones that would be heard all across the beach, praising the party’s efforts.
A half-soaked junior hero rested her hands on her knees, ragged breaths interrupting her words. If not for the workout, she would have covered her ears; fortunately, the volume strayed just shy of damaging them. “You too, big dude! You have a great time diving out there. Maybe try not to get so close to land again, alright?” Even Amp offered a wave and a call as the Wailord turned to leave. “I’d say that that was a job well done…! And a lesson learned for me: Bring more pushing Pokemon next time. You planned pretty well for this.”
[break] the song of the newly saved wailord gave the pokkenger's heart such a soft and warm feeling. a job well done indeed. it was tough yeah but sure enough with team work and lots of grit they managed to get it done. he couldn't help but allocate a lot of it to his newest sidekick however, and as the junior hero was busy catching her breath pokkenger wandered a few inches into the water and gave the wailord a wave. "don't be too eager to come back soon!" [break][break] as young pocky regretted the fact that she probably should have brought a few extra pokemon like pokkenger the hero just let out a chuckle. "that's probably true. i could stand to follow it as well, a few extra pokemon from my team might have made this much easier. but that's whats good about this, we both managed to help someone as well as learn a few things about teammwork. good job pocky." turning and giving his sidekick a thumbs up he really wished his helmet had a piece for a mouth to show through so she could see the smile he was giving her. [break][break] scrambles decided to help out as well as it approached annie and offered a soft-boiled egg for her efforts. "now rest up! even if we're done for today tomorrow is a whole new beast. no telling who's gonna need a hero to help them out. hope your ready to work your butt off pocky. pretty soon your name might show up in the news in no time flat."
